Got an email saying I have access now as an insider. It looks like it has much, but not all, of the content available on CHCH 11. I much watch a couple of things but in a crowded world of online streaming, it wouldn't be my "go to" service. No app as of yet but it is mobile friendly.
SOWNY » Telecommunications and Broadcast Acts Under Threat? » December 11, 2024 1:51 pm |
I've avoided posting this because it's can easily become partisan and I know we want to avoid that on this board. I do think it's important though.
With Trump threatening tariffs as of late, I'm wondering is that is just a smoke screen to demand concessions on long held American beefs. Americans have always wanted access to our "sacred cows". (Not sure is that is a politically correct term these days but I'm using it.) Restrictions on US dairy sales and ownership of banks come to mind. Applicable to this board though is the issue ownership of Canadian broadcasting and telecommunication companies (Bell, Rogers, Telus, etc.). Would Trump demand an end to our protection? Would we cave in and change our Telecommunications and Broadcast Acts ownership laws if that meant avoiding tariffs? Would the Canadian Government secretly offer that as a bargaining chip? My hunch is that anything is on the table because we want to keep the economy going and avoid a deep recession plus the Americans have incredible economic power over us. Sigh. :/
Your thoughts?

I use the myTuner app on ROKU to listen to Jazz.FM91, CBC, etc. when I'm in my office. It's like TunedIn. Today, I came across
which seems to have countless commercial free, steaming channels. Like tons of them. The footer says it's from the United Arab Emirates and part of ROR Investment & Securities. They also have an Android and Apple app.SOWNY » The Null Points Of HD Radio » November 20, 2024 10:14 am |

It's like digital TV; either the signal is there or it's not. I prefer that to holding the antenna for my Dad so he could watch the Leaf's game.

SOWNY » Why Is One Of The World's Major Sporting Events Not On Toronto Radio? » October 29, 2024 7:43 pm |
I'm late to the topic here. I too was looking for the World Series on the radio during a drive home and surprised not to find it. On reflection, I thought with cell phone data so plentiful -- I have 160 GB per month -- I guess they're expecting more people will simply listen to audio feed on their phone TV apps.

I suggest that someone come up with an election night drinking game based on phrases uttered like popular vote, swing state, the wall, fascist, etc.

The tops ones for me would be The Guess Who and Rush. Lots of good names where. Others to be consider should include The Barenaked Ladies, The Band, Simple Plan, Sum 41, April Wine, Nickleback (yeah, I know), Arcade Fire.
SOWNY » Corus Launching 2 New Cable Channels Replacing Those They Lost » September 19, 2024 12:23 pm |
Thing is with specialty channels is they have celebrities. People watch the Food Network to see Bobby Flay, Anna Olsen and Ted Allen. It will be tough for Corus's knockoffs to complete.
SOWNY » Rogers Buys Out Bell's Stake In MLSE, The Leafs & Raptors » September 18, 2024 5:42 pm |
I'm not sure I understand Bell's reasoning.
They say they want to move from being a telecommunications company to being a technology company. What does that mean exactly?
Jeff Bezos seems to do okay with Amazon, Prime Video and AWS. Why shouldn't Bell have an eclectic mix?
Bell's stock price went up today while Rogers (Class B) went down.

Dump CBC Music. Revert to the former Radio II format. Mostly jazz and classical. That's the way it was when Radio II was available only in Canada's major cities. But when they started expanding the network out to small towns like London, Kingston and Cabbageville, the Toronto elitists at CBC felt they had to dumb it down for us hayseeds out here. They thought to attract more listeners. It hasn't worked for them.
Without wanting to get too far off topic, London has had CBC Stereo / Radio 2 / CBC Music since 1978. And London is a metro area of 600,000, larger than Halifax.
That network had an all-classical format for many years, and it’s only since 2008 it’s been “dumbed down”. They have not expanded this network into new cities in the past 25 years, with the possible exception of Sudbury.

The station's potential audience is "aging out" -- of which I am one. They need to find the next incarnation of CJRT before it's too late. What might that be?

SOWNY » Q: Politicians & Playing Popular Music ... » August 11, 2024 9:17 am |
Can a musician actually stop a politician from playing their music or do they give up their rights when they sign a recording contract? Do politicians pay the musicians for this public playing of the song?
When I read about protests proclaiming "I don't want candidate X playing my music", it often is worded to imply that they can't do anything about the playing of the song but they're instead making a public statement that they don't want to be associated with the candidate.
Related but not the same, it makes me think of Burton Cummings revoking all public performance of certain songs to stop the Guess Who ™ from performing live. The article said no one could perform these songs live and would impact his income. I'm assuming most artists don't take such extreme measures like the political sitiuation mentioned above.
Thanks in advance for your insights!
