SOWNY » What TV Shows Did You Like as a Kid? » April 14, 2024 9:34 am

The one, first run show I begged my parents to let me watch was Bewitched. It was on at 8:30 and my bed time was 8:00.

Mace, you're bringing back some happy memories!

Here are a few that come to mind:

- Jim Ignatowski (Christopher Lloyd) from Cheers. An idiot savant but mostly an idiot.
- Tobias Fünke (David Cross) from Arrested Development. An idiot's idiot. (You're seeing a trend here?)
- George Costanza (Jason Alexander) from Seinfeld. The funniest self-loathing schemer.
- Dwight Schrute (Rain Wilson) from The Office. A man so unaware of himself or is he?
- Jack Jarvis, Esq and Victor McDade (Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill) from Still Game from The Comedy Unit / BBC Scotland. They two play Glaswegian pensioners. I had to use sub-titles to understand them and, when I did, it was very, very funny.

I'd watch reboots of any of these shows in a minute.

It's my opinion.

Wow. Get over yourself. It’s radio discussion board. If you don’t want to discuss anything, start a blog without a comment section and talk to yourself.
You said Ben Wagner was awful. Not average, not below average. Awful. That’s a strong opinion. He’s obviously curious as to what you didn’t like. You know, THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF THIS BOARD?
If you aren’t too offended at someone not accepting your opinion as the word of the Lord Almighty, would you care to expand on your original thought, or are you too infallible to engage with us mere mortals?

Tomas and peter, it's no big deal. There was no bad intent in my question.

I thought Wagner was fine so I was curious to know why peter felt that way. If nothing else, Wagner's ability to do many broadcasts by himself - 3 to 4 hours - should be admired, IMHO.

As for Schulman, he's young. He'll get there.

Neither of you know me, however, I'm never one for a p*ssing match. Life's too short for that.

So, no announcers? That's why I listen to radio. I want to hear someone speak between the songs and ads and give me context, news or a joke. If I just want a music feed I'll switch on my Sonos and iTunes.

SOWNY » Is this a future for listener supported radio/TV? » February 14, 2024 6:19 pm

Muffaraw Joe, I havn't seen you on the board in a while!

Yes, there does seem to be more fundraising at the station. I guess it's a sign of the times with people having less disposable income to give away. I've not bought a 50-50 but I do give them a very modest donation every month.

Would it work elsewhere? Yes, but I do wonder when we'll hit "peak betting".

Good luck to Ben Schulman!

I hope they work on his inclination to talk to guests and chatter rather than describe the game at hand.

Also, here's to Ben Wagner who I thought was very good. I hope he rebounds and finds a great job.

They already have a Classical FM transmitter in Collingwood. That's less than 60 km away. Would the signal reach there? If so, maybe Owen Sound becomes Zoomer Radio north?

I don't think area codes matter much anymore. Most carriers offer Canada wide calling as part of their plans. I have a friend living in VIctoria who kept her 416 number.

SOWNY » Jays Radio Play-By-Play » August 26, 2023 6:37 pm

With purpose in mind, I came to the board and found this post so I could agree with you. What I heard today was really bad. He missed calling a pitch then quickly called a third strike to end the inning. Prior to that he was talking to Madison Shipman about some former Blue Jay.

Call the game! The chit chat is the extra part.

I used to be sympathetic to Wagner working alone. I thought it was unfair to do so. Now I'm thinking it might be the better scenario.

Lasted only two innings when I increased the TV volume and turned off the jays radio broadcast.  When Ben Shulman and Blake Murphy are doing the games, there is just too much superfluous talk between pitches giving the impression they must prevent any dead air, when in fact some is welcomed.  I wonder if air checks are done.  If so, in today's radio industry there's probably no one to monitor or even care.

I read somewhere that the entire season is taped in just 6 weeks. After that, Pat and Vanna go on an extended promotional tour. Those quick clips at the end of the show are from that tour. It will be a sweet gig for someone.

I know this puts 'geek' into a whole new level but if you can have a favourite font, that isn't Helvetica, the one on the sped-up selectric in this clip was mine.  Called  'Orator' it was _the_ newsroom font for scripts etc.

The other is Serpentine, if you want to re-live 1980's Dubner or Chryon days .  I believe TSN used to use this extensively, among many others.
