Many years ago, when I lived in southern Chatham-Kent, Cleveland’s 1260 and Erie’s 1260 would clobber one another, with Cleveland winning on points.

Windsor and Essex County were ill served when it came to airing local news and issues back when CKLW-AM was a de facto Detroit station.
CJSP in Leamington, which came on the air in 1955, filled the gap to some extent but it was a day-time only operation and continued to focus mostly on the county when it was transformed into CHYR (710 daytime) and CHIR (730 nighttime).
CBE (1550 AM) certainly offered comprehensive coverage of national and provincial affairs after opening in 1950 as one of the links in CBC’s Trans-Canada Network.
It also provided a stepping stone for Al Hamel and Lloyd Robertson.
But CBE's coverage of Windsor news was sparse.
That all changed in 1964 with the arrival of CKWW (AM 580, Wonderful Windsor) which tried to relate everything to Windsor (if a satellite was launched into space, listeners were told it was flying in the sky over Windsor).
Windsor listeners, of course, had the luxury of devoting the highest percentage of hours tuned to the variety and polish offered by a plethora of Detroit stations.

It's the end of an era at AM800 CKLW.Lisa Williams, the longtime co-host of The Morning Drive has announced her retirement.
She will be turning off her microphone for the final time on Friday, May 31.Williams' has been a part of AM800 since 1986, starting out as a board op.
She also did part time sales along with part time on air work in 1988. In 1992, Williams became the full time co-host of the morning show alongside the late Cam Gardiner. In 2003, Gardiner retired and was replaced by current co-host Mike Kakuk.
Williams made the official announcement live on-air Friday morning on AM800.
"It's been an honour and a privilege to have connected with our morning listeners for almost four decades. My role on The Morning Drive has always been a labour of love, but I've decided to make this change because there are many more things I want to do," said Williams. "I'm grateful for having the opportunity to work alongside so many remarkable and talented people who have left a mark on my heart. Our show has always been about the listeners. It has been a shared experience, a daily ritual, and a platform for connection as the day begins. The support of our incredible audience has made The Morning Drive not just a radio show, but a community."
Her passion for sharing stories affecting the local community has resonated with listeners and played a pivotal role in supporting AM800 as the most dependable source of information for the Windsor-Essex region. After 38-years, Williams says she's looking forward to more time with family, traveling, and continuing her involvement in local causes and community events. The Morning Drive is the #1 morning show in Windsor-Essex.It airs weekday mornings from 5 a.m. until 9 a.m.

Thanks darcyh.
One negative example of directionality for me is how Detroit’s WXYT (1270) is clear as a bell here in Windsor in the daytime but then sounds like a tangled ball of string in my Forest Glade neighbourhood when it switches to the nighttime pattern, both with 50,000 watts.

Much appreciated, darcyh.
Your explanation is comprehensible in explaining the various features and how they interact.
The task is indeed a work of art as well as an engineering challenge. It also explains why so many AM sites are no longer up to snuff due to shortchanging maintenance and upgrades due to cost.
So theoretically, a 10,000 watt station could split the power of 2,500 watts each to 2 towers and 5,000 to another via the phasor if that would achieve the directional properties sought?

As a teenager, I remember CKLW pausing for a “pattern change.” My understanding eventually progressed to the point that I understood WJR had an omnidirectional pattern while Detroit’s 1500 (now WLQV) operated with a multiple array. At the same time, I’ve never really grasped how a directional antenna system works.
Can someone explain, or refer me to an article, that sets it out in layman's terms?
And remember, math was my worst subject in school so a straightforward explanation, please, with many thanks!

"AM580 reminds listeners that it operates “from the home of the legendary Big 8.” While the disc jockeys and newscasts are gone, that music continues to emanate from the station’s four towers in former Anderson Township (now part of Amherstburg)."
A correction here. It should be Anderdon Township. No doubt a victim of autocorrect.
