Tragically Hip was one of those bands that you either liked them or couldn't really understand their appeal.  They connected with a lot of people and their album sales certainly confirm that.

Success didn't happen for them anywhere else but in Canada. I am not sure if their singles and albums were widely released outside of North America.   But they were popular in cities that could get Canadian radio like Detroit, Buffalo, Washington State/Seattle. In these cities they could sell out arenas.

A few weeks ago while listening to the WGRF Rock 97 morning show, a listener from Lancaster NY was listing his favourite bands that he liked to hear on the station.  His favourite band was Tragically Hip and he went on how many times he saw them in concert in Buffalo and across the border.

The WNED program must be part of a fund raiser for the station.  Obviously appealing to their many Canadian viewers, but the band certainly was somewhat well known and reasonable popular in WNY.

CBS has a winner with their new drama Tracker.  Live viewers in a seven day window Tracker has been picking up over 10 million viewers.  Over a 35 day period including streaming on Paramount+ over 20 million.  In Canada the show is popular for CTV with almost a million overnight watching and likely double that over the same 35 day time frame.

So far Tracker is the most successful new network show in six years.  More details from Bill Brioux of brioux.tv.

CKCK Regina which is currently a CTV owned and operated station was an affiliated station with CBS from 1954 to 1970. They were also a private affiliate of CBC during this time.

When I read the derailment story for the editor at CBS News, I told him that I wasn't a news person and had just finished my on air shift.  I read the story and didn't stumble and he complimented me that I didn't boot reading the copy.  He likely was a little easier on me since I wasn't working in news.  Probably you are right and did say my name and for CBS News Thunder Bay.  I don't really remember, but that makes sense.

I have no idea how much CKPR fed to CBS radio news or even NewsRadio for that matter.  We had four or five strong news reporters at CKPR radio including Jeff Sandler, Chris Duncan, George Burns and Ron Kronstein who were always keen to file stories for NewsRadio.

There were a number of Canadian stations that had secondary affiliations with one of the US TV networks especially in the 50's and into the early 60's.  Most were independently owned stations but also an affiliate of CBC.

CKLW while still affiliated with CBC was also an affiliate of the Dumont TV network in the US.  I know that a few stations in Western Canada also had secondary affiliations with American networks for a time.

I don't know much about these arrangements or how extensive they were.  I am sure some programming was involved but I was also of the understanding that it involved news reporting.  This meant that a station like CKNX could run reports of stories from CBS on their local news.  In turn CKNX could send reports for CBS if anything of note happened in mid-western Ontario that would be of interest to a US audience.  And not necessarily always hard news.

When the old NewsRadio network was operating across Canada, they were also affiliated with CBS radio.  When working at CKPR in Thunder Bay our radio station would send voice reports to CBS Radio in New York from time to time.  Occasionally they would call and ask if we had any reports or information on certain stories.

Once we had a large train derailment in town and our news people sent various reports to CBS radio and all reports ended with the reporters name and CBS News Thunder Bay.  I actually did one of the reports for CBS Radio early one morning when they called and wanted a report on the derailment.

CNN refer to Canadian stations as affiliates when they pick up a report from a Canadian source or network.

I was the same, in college enrolled in the broadcast course (Radio/TV) and not watching television.  I did listen to a lot of radio however.

Even at my first job after college didn't watch television.  My apartment was furnished and had a portable black and white TV.  Living in Thunder Bay, the only stations I could get off air were CHFD (CTV), CKPR (CBC), TVO, and one station from Duluth Minn.  Didn't have cable.

I remember watching a Leaf game one Saturday night when I was sick, and oddly enough watching Peter Gzowski's late night talk show.  The only reason I remember this is because he introduced a new comedian that nobody had ever heard of before.  Robin Williams.  I remember Williams was incredibly funny and unique.  Gzowski was laughing so hard, he could hardly talk, and the studio audience was roaring the whole time.

So like you, I went about six years and rarely watched TV.  Even though I majored in broadcasting and was working at a radio and TV station.   I had heard about all these great shows 1975 to around 1981 but watched almost none of them.  But I think when you are in your late teens and into your mid 20's even back then this wasn't rare.

I enjoy the Olympics both summer and winter.  The games in Paris should be memorable in such a beautiful city.

Doesn't CBC Gem have Coronation Street?  Maybe that's where the schedule will flip to during the games.  It's free, so no money to subscribe or watch on line.  CBC does a great job covering the Olympics.  And with 22 hours per day thanks to the time zone difference, it will always be on.

The three networks work well at cross promoting events.  It is nice that CBC, Bell and Rogers do this to give us the best coverage.

Although not at the level of the Super Bowl commercials, during the Olympics, CBC and NBC will have some new expensive ads that have been produced just for the games.

I didn't write it very clearly but I was talking about the 18-49 result for the Masters.  Golf attracts more young people than many think.  Went to the Canadian Open about 5 years ago and many of the sold out crowd was in that 18-49 demo.  Something I wasn't expecting.

So thanks RA, and Aaron for all of the...let's call them, "frank exchanges" over the years.  It's been fun and I have always learned something whenever we chat.  Here's to a few more in the days ahead!  Hopefully  most of the members on SOWNY won't be thinking ...."not this again!"

Thinking about turkeytop's question about shows you watched as a kid.  This is the opposite.  Did you have a time  when you didn't watch TV at all for an extended time or very little?

When I went to college for 3 years, I hardly watched any television.  Sometimes a bit if I went home on weekends.  I can't say I really missed it that much at the time.  I went months not watching one show.  I was just out of the habit, and too busy.  Also in college the social life can be intense!

So did you ever go for an extended time for whatever reason not watching television?  And did you miss TV?

Interesting as well,  tomorrow evening CTV and City TV have no simsub.   CTV didn't have any Saturday night, Sunday night and none tomorrow.  Simsub will always be with us, but ever since COVID the Canadian networks generally don't seem to have as much or as consistent in prime time.

I still enjoy watching news.  I do flip around a little just to see how the various networks report on something, especially breaking news.

Tried MSNBC and FOX News for about three months.  Actually didn't really like either of them.  Both too political and entrenched in their camps. FOX is just infotainment fluff news most of the time and tries too hard to be outrageous.  Plus they lie.  MSNBC was a bit self righteous and sometimes whiney.  NBC News is a good package and I don't mind ABC.  But don't usually watch the 6:30 broadcasts of these two.

I watch local news  anywhere from 5-7pm.  CHCH has more local news than CTV Kitchener.  I check out CTV Windsor sometimes and surprisingly through the week they aren't too bad.  I don't get CBC Windsor, guess I could watch on line.  CBC's local casts with the exception of a few out west tend to be not great.

CNN is the best US cable network as far as I am concerned but they are not popular any longer in the US.  They are big in Canada.  Even with CNN I need to get away since they tend to overdue some stories IMHO.  Last week for a couple of days it seemed to be almost all O.J. all the time.  Also get tired of so much of the Donald, but they are a US network for US viewers.

I enjoy CBC News Network. CTV News Channel, and CP24.  The Canadian news nets aren't as nearly politically entrenched as south of the border.  They don't dwell on stories as much per say. and often are a nice change from CNN, especially on big American political stories.  CBC News Network has moments of being brilliant.  BBC is ok but I don't watch them as much as before.  They make more on air technical mistakes than they should, which is a bit surprising.

Global also chose to do something rare on broadcast TV.  They actually ran all of the credits at the end with no overlap of promo or squeeze screen to include ads.  They just ran the credits full screen, not speeded up but for all to read and it was kind of nice.  Perfect end to a wonderful concert.

It's online at CBS (RA provided the link) but you need a VPN for the USA.    Looks to me like they only chopped 2 minutes or so.

True, but the damage has been done.  CBS should have been prepared for the Masters to run overtime.  As was mentioned they had also been hyping this concert for a long time and that it would run at 9pm.  Never should have scheduled it on Sunday in the first place since their Sunday schedule almost always gets screwed up.

As mentioned it was great to be able to look at the credits with all the information on the songs and music in the background with all of the thank you's to individuals and communities in the NY area.

Anyway I watched it on Global, and a much better experience with the program running at 9pm as advertised.

Again this evening no simsub on CTV, Global or CTV2.  The Masters Golf Tournament  was the culprit for much of this.  Of late Global has just been opting to stick to their regular schedule even when a sports event runs over on the US network.  This may work for Global since they have been enjoying a half hour jump on the CBS programming tonight.

This year so far has been interesting.  We have been seeing CTV, CTV2 and Global having less simsub than normal in prime time, even through the week, and City TV and CHCH have a bit more.

Sadly, for us listeners, viewers, employees, and customers, our expectations of Mr. Bibic are misguided.

BCE stock has troubles

Many investors are watching the saga of BCE (TSX:BCE) as the stock enters the second year of its downtrend. The telco has been in the headlines as it grapples with high interest rates, significant capital spending on 5G infrastructure, rising competition from industry consolidation, falling data prices, and regulatory tussle. It sent BCE stock into a two-year-long downtrend from its peak of above $73 in April 2022 to its 10-year low of around $44, a 39% dip.

As the stock enters the third year of the downtrend, it has made investors apprehensive, making you wonder how low it can go.

In September 2023 BCE's debt stood at about CA$35 billion. Bay and Wall St.are not panicked about this yet but are concerned. https://simplywall.st/stocks/ca/telecom/tsx-bce/bce-shares/news/does-bce-tsebce-have-a-healthy-balance-sheet-1

Bell certainly has got itself into a public relations mess.  Even their own stations were showing that clip of Kevin Waugh ripping into CEO Mirko Bibic yesterday.  Powerful stuff.

Most of this mess is Bell's fault in my opinion, but not all.  Even today because the layoffs at Bell Media and the much larger number at BCE are written in a way that implies that all 6,000 layoffs were Bell Media.
.
How many times did the media report that 100 Source stores were closing?  How many people lost their jobs with this?  Or how many employees were let go at Bell Mobility?  Not a lot was reported on the big cutbacks at BCE and the expansion of their cellular networks.  We did hear much about the 45 radio stations that were sold, and the cancelling of weekend newscasts.   Some media reports even said initially that Bell was closing 45 radio stations.

Almost all of the reporting focused on what Bell Media was doing, but very little regarding the much bigger number of people being let go in other divisions of BCE.  In reality Bell Media over the past six months has downsized by about 600 positions, including jobs that were vacant.  About the same number as the  layoffs at CBC.  Still a lot and a shame for those out of work, but not 6,000.

Bell should have clarified all of this right at the beginning.  They either didn't or did a very poor job explaining. Not a good look for a communications company.  However, the news media reporting the story should do their homework and get their facts straight.  They did and continue to do a lousy job reporting on the impact of all of these cutbacks and not only at Bell Media.

Regarding CTV in Saskatoon with only 1 hour of local news every day.  How many hours of  local news do the Global and CBC stations in Saskatoon carry every day?  Regina and Saskatoon still have a local morning show from 6am to 9am weekdays with CTV Morning Live Saskatchewan.  We have nothing like that here in Toronto or Ontario and must put up wi

The building has been up for sale for a while. The FM stations now operate from the CFPL TV building on Communications Rd. Both AM stations were shut down are are now silent.

Yes the building was constructed for CJBK and you are right, it was a very modern and attractive structure for it's day.  I think they were asking $1.9 million for the building and property.

CFPL TV was doubled in size and had a major renovation in 1985.  This was back in the days when they were making money and still a CBC affiliate.   At this time the station had about 200 employees.  CFPL TV is a nice looking building and would have lots of room for the radio stations.  Wonder how many people work in that facility now?

Another guest usually worth listening to or watching would be David Frum.  He is very well versed on both Canadian and US politics and appears in media on both side of the border.

Frum was the first major conservative writer to call out the Republican party back during the Tea Party days.  He generally is a conservative pundit but of the older much more sane and progressive variety.  For years now he has been one of the harshest critics of the 45th president and of the Republican party.  In fact he was a critic of Donald Trump long before he became president.

Once a semi regular guest on FOX News Network, Frum has been banished from the network for years.  Through all of this he has been on CTV, CBC, Global,TVO, CNN, CBS, NBC and various radio programs for a couple of decades. Currently he writes for the Atlantic and spends the summer and other parts of the year in Prince Edward County on Lake Ontario.

Born and raised in Canada and the son of Barbara Frum he is well versed in Canadian and provincial politics.
