I hate to say it but I broke the story on my website nwbroadcasters.com at 11:30 pm last night. Dan was unusually late on that one.

I don't really care "who breaks what" Brian. This is not a competition.

Thank you for the kind words RadioActive. It is indeed a huge confusing mess that I hope gets sorted out soon. .

Guess I should have said "listener participation" commercial Talk radio doesn't belong on FM. Big difference between that and a News-Talk format. FM Talk might be working in parts of Quebec, but I really can't see it being successful in any other major Canadian market anytime in the near future.

I still maintain that Roundhouse Radio would have worked if it was on AM. Talk does not belong on FM in Canada.

Hasn't changed Mike. Legal ID's are still required at or near the top of the hour (except for CBC stations). However the city of license requirement seems to have morphed into the "city served" (ie-CKNW 980 is licensed to New Westminster, but only mentions Vancouver in their legal ID).

According to my records the Voice of Aurora Community Radio group applied for an extension in March 2018 for CHRA 101.5 as the station had not met the original deadline to get on the air. The revised construction permit then expired in March 2019. Failing to meet the extended deadline CHRA was deleted from the ISEDC database without ever hitting the air..

Andy: I have HD2 as Portuguese, HD3 as Spanish, & HD4 as a simulcast of Red FM 93.1 (CKYE) Vancouver. Of course chances are that they have since dumped the HD4 simulcast now that CIRV itself has been branded as Red FM.

Not the first time something like this has happened. Back in 2010 when CKOV 103.1 in Kelowna, B.C. changed calls to CKQQ it appeared on the Industry Canada (now ISEDC) database about a month before the station actually started using the new calls.

Seems odd to me that the CIAO calls are currently on the ISEDC's "List of Available Call Signs for Broadcast Stations in Canada" and that CHLO is no longer listed. Based on that observation It appears as if the calls at 530 AM have been legally changed, but perhaps someone forgot to tell the staff. The other possibility is that maybe ISEDC has their wires crossed with this whole situation.

The ISEDC database shows the call letters as CHLO, as does the FCC data on the REC site:
https://fccdata.org/?lang=en&facid=106051

The CIAO calls are now listed as being available for use on the ISEDC website:
https://sms-sgs.ic.gc.ca/sippGeneral/callSignList?execution=e1s1&lang=en_CA

Why the station is still using the CIAO calls is beyond me.

CIRV 88.9, CIUT 89.5, and CFXJ 93.5 have been granted HD channels as well. Anyone know what the plans are for these new HD stations?

The FM antenna was substandard on my C Crane. It snapped off after only a few months of normal use. My letters and messages of complaint about the matter were ignored by the staff at C Crane. In comparison the antenna on my trusty old GE Superadio II is still holding out after a good 30 years of normal use.

Barilko05 is indeed correct. Your Z 95.3 sticker is from CKZZ 95.3 Vancouver (circa mid-90's).

The PNE in Vancouver has also had that "no sticker" policy for a number of years now.

"Isn’t there any federal law that requires these stations to publicly identify themselves at least once in 24 hours? If not, when and why did that change?"

It hasn;t changed, but usually ISEDC will look the other way when it comes to legal ID's on TV stations (or on CBC radio for that matter). Much more strict for private radio with a legal ID required once an hour, but ISEDC will just give violators a slap on the wrist as opposed to south of the border where the FCC routinely issues fines to legal ID offenders.

A similar scenario happened a decade ago with Rogers CKCL 107.5 Chilliwack, CKCL-1 92.5 Abbotsford, & CKCL-2 104.9 Vancouver (now CKKS, CKKS-1, CKKS-2......KISS FM). The ruling was a little more strict as they were required to give out their legal ID every 30 minutes.
