Considering the ability to listen online, I wonder if it would be better to properly mention the originating program that produced the clip used. Perhaps Toronto ex-pats might want to tune in from elsewhere.

Yes, and actually Shane Hewitt from Bell's "The Night Shift" (on seven Bell stations) makes a full meal of this regularly: He does a "in case you missed it" type thing throwing to clips from the day from different stations and clearly indicates the station name and host. Nice idea to promote the brand but if someone finds they're resonating with a particular host and their guests or viewpoint, they can tune in via the app/podcast version or stream it live.

One other takeaway...why wouldn't Ben Mulroney mention the name of Greg Brady's show? Very strange not to stroke the most important daypart and lift up your on air brethren.

Because Ben's show is national, it might be that he didn't want to refer to a specific local market's morning man where the host name would be meaningless to many of the listeners.

I'm thinking they'd likely ask Dave Trafford on a contract/freelance basis. Trafford has filled in on that morning show slot before. I recall that he was removed from the "Round Table" panels a couple years ago and said in an episode of one of his podcasts that there was a hallway/informal talk implication his own "Story Studio Network" is a competition for Bell and its own podcasts. That thinking seems to have eased a bit as he's been back on the Round Tables since.

Interesting. It looks as if the show has been perhaps now reconfigured to a weekend-only thing? His X (formerly Twitter) bio blurb now reads:

Host “Weekends with Ben O’Hara-Byrne” Corus Radio, Sat-Sun 7-11am ET,  6-10am CT/MT/PT. Former bureau chief Beijing/London"

In a post promoting Sunday's show, one listener commented "Great show but you deserve a better time slot! Loved listening to you in the evenings! Corus has made a big mistake not giving you a better time slot!"

I threw some AI "deep research" tools at this question for fun, with the given information, with the goal to locate current contact information or whereabouts, and nothing not already summarized/known resulted.

The "Raging Redhead" moniker I knew was also used for Cam Stewart ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam_Stewart_(sportscaster) ).

These parallel posts already up on Reddit might also get wider eyes/visibility. Hopefully someone knows something!

You can't run out of racetrack.

I agree it's a bit clunky. But I always instinctively interpreted his use of that saying to mean the particular race is over - i.e. no more laps to be run. "We're all out of racetrack" - that's it, race is done, you can't go around again. You've had X laps and they're all used up. The racetrack is indeed a structure that one couldn't run out of, so is perpetually there, but we're not talking about showing up to an empty track on an off day and going around and around. We're in the context of a race where the number of laps or time is finite and pre-determined, i.e. "End of the horserace".

Agreed. I don't pay attention to the station beyond what's posted here (or mentioned in Toronto Mike'd episodes, like the regular Mike Richards appearances there), but this is disappointing to read.

Surely there are some broadcasting program graduates (or even final-year students) toiling away in some other capacity or can't find work that, though "green" and not experienced, could be better than the rerolls and one would hear them improve on-air during these stretches. Heck, a Kelly Cutrara or even a Mike Stafford getting in there for coverage as some freelance work.

Years ago, Newstalk 1010 (probably then "CFRB" in branding) did "Talk Radio Idol" on Sunday nights where they had everyday members of the community competing for an eventual show (I don't think that ever materialized, though) in that slot. Two female best friends who were known for chatting it up on everything and anything, a male standup comic, I think even a husband-and-wife team (think "The Motts") that traded playful barbs and observations. I would think even this would be better than the rerolls if they had a decent producer or board op to keep them on track and moving with ad breaks, etc.

One of my favourite Chalmers memories is that for a period of time (early to mid 2010s or so) he was doing some work for the "Canadian Traffic Network" and doing traffic breaks on 1010 and elsewhere. Toronto was having problems with sinkholes opening up and seemingly another one in the news all the time. On one traffic break he said "And a stinkhole that has opened up..." vs. "sinkhole" - he somehow made it through the rest of the segment without losing it in laughter, but the bemusement in his voice was clearly there.

Why wouldn't the thread name be "Jeff Chalmers leaving Boom?" or something more meaningful?

One thing that user could do is try hitting the https://gta.boardhost.com/ URL directly vs. sowny.net (which redirects to the gta.boardhost.com address). A user can't always control redirects - sometimes the site will script it out that way, or it's hostname or sub-domain resolution, etc., - and the error may persist - but one of the things they can control is removing one of the entry points that serves as a redirect.

Yeah - this reminds me of the type of liner/intro that's recorded when some celebrity impressionist is in town for whatever reason and his PR firm (or himself, lol) books him on a few media outlets - maybe Greg's show? - and they record these and continue to run it occasionally for months or years after the fact, by that time losing all context or connection with the origin appearance or who the impersonator was.

No idea why "Home Alone 2" would be the high benchmark, unless this was done in the holiday season and Greg rhapsodized it was a favorite movie or something. Also perhaps the only theatrical appearance/cameo. Seems like the kind of 10 second movie appearance (which I believe it was) an impersonator would drench in satire by making his caricature of Trump boast about it.

Yes, Turner took over "The Early Edition" from Iain Grant. It ran 5:00-5:30 am when John Moore's show began at 5:30 am. Newscaster Dave Agar would eventually join Turner to riff on stories of the day. I think the station's live programming only ever began at 5:00 am; rerolls until then.

The old lineup here suggests it ran one hour long from 5:00-6:00 am in the Bill Carroll era when Bill's show began at 6:00 am.

I heard that! And I'm not going to shoot myself!"

Yes, Moore mentioned on Monday (the 12th) that this was likely to be the case, but wasn't sure and quipped that Robert Turner often chides him for not reading E-mail. He was even less certain about his fill-in hosts for this week!

I suppose for Victoria Day on the 19th we'll get "Best Of" rerolls or they'll take CP24 live from 7 am or so?

Morrison is brutal, and frankly, 640 Toronto has better people they could plug into the role.

I'll give Morrison the fact she has a pleasant radio voice and, arguably, "manner", but I'm increasingly noticing she can't get through many sentences without fumbling words and correcting herself mid-stream, or choosing what I'd consider not an ideal word when talking off the top of her head (i.e. she called the Vancouver SUV attack "incredible" this morning, then quickly had to correct herself, saying something like "tragic - not incredible"). The show's opening monologue, at least, seems scripted (by her), and she chokes on reading those words.

I am not certain many "non-radio" folks could do better, and good on her for exploring this gig, so the above comments are no attack on her - simply an acknowledgment of "you get what you pay for" and installing a host with some radio or communications background often produces a more lucid product and words are everything on talk radio. Morrison is an example of how true radio pros "make it look easy" where Morrison stumbles and fumbles sentences frequently. She also has some annoying running motifs like "TTC shuttle buss hell" due to subway closures and conversations about the weather opening most top-of-show segments. (Weather, the most mundane topic one can speak of for "small talk".)

Incidentally, she indicated Greg Brady will join her on Sunday's (May 4th) show. Not sure if they pretaped that in the week as at least a couple of her segments seem to be or he'll call in live.

I'd heard over the years that apparently for a mixture of pre-recorded segments on different days within the industry, it's common to clip on tags/identifiers on the clothing racks to the hangers or to the inside of suit jackets, pant waistbands, backs of ties (if worn), shoe insoles, etc. identifying the day/segment number so the wardrobe is consistent. If they're taping a few back-to-back they'll change between them (even like the taping of game shows in a concentrated block in one or two days). Plus, these days, taking photos too as a visual reference point is trivial.

Very interesting about the "forgot the birthday" thing. Oops!

Frankish in his first week would occasionally say "in for Greg Brady" - not "filling in", but "in for". That was dropped, but Frankish can't surely think the gig is 100% his.

Newstalk 1010 (on their own programming, 9 am forward) board opp'ing/technical production wasn't great today either. Gaps of silence when a clip didn't fire, wrong intros (Jerry Agar being introduced on Amanda Galbraith's show) or abrupt intro stops instead of fade-outs, the constant audible sound of Jerry Agar's typing and mouse-clicking, tentative or too-early music beds under Heather Seaman's news reports, etc.   There wasn't a single 10 or 15 minute segment without some type of problem.

To be fair, they're already cut to the bone staffing-wise in the most normal of workdays and holiday coverage is a notch below that, and lots of unique programming to generate today with lots of clips from the night prior, so the complexity is atypical - but the end result was still not great for the listener and that's all we should have to care about.
