Is that Mike Bullard hosting the drivetime show THE Mike Bullard? If it is, it's certainly taken him awhile to land something after that debacle involving Cynthia Mulligan of City TV. It's quite a comedown after being on CFRB, Canada's biggest talk radio station. That may well be worth tuning into just to hear if he references his long absence.

Yes, it is THE Mike Bullard from what a Toronto media friend tells me

Well aware of the site, it was discussed in another CKNT thread.  I like to scan the dial for distant signals rather then listen online, sometimes.

Well clearly, it should be Penns960 and not Sauga.  Its barely audible here.

It's usually only good for 30-60 seconds at a time with WKVX Wooster, OH, WATS Sayre, PA and WHYL Carlisle PA showing up too.

You're definitely in DXer's paradise Paul. The noise floor is almost non-existent. You've also got the elevation for some of those nice FM catches that you shared earlier this year.

The noise floor is well hidden.. i sit in the woods near a walking path behind my house.   My radio is not made really for AM, but more for SW.. if i had a radio designed for AM.. it'd be even better.

Waits for someone to get my ".. but the Sauga 960 format doesnt whip the llamas ass".. joke lol

@Fitz.. glad to help    IT looks like CKNT should possibly produce a respectable signal here for what they are .. so I'll make some recordings from time to time.   1410 is empty here otherwise, 1400 and 1420 have semi locals..... 1400 is 1kw from about 10 miles away but its down in a valley.  1420 is 5kw from 25 miles away down in a valley.. so 1410 is nice and empty here.

I found a facebook page for Sauga 960.. it looks like they're using Winamp to play out their music in between live talk shows, of which they have a few.  I got a look at the studio in a live video they did and recognized Winamp immediately.  Search Sauga 960 on Facebook.. they have a basic website with a webstream too.

I don't think the Sauga 960 format whips the llama's ass though.

Curious what you're using for a receiver and antenna.

A 300 foot longwire antenna on the ground in the woods... a signal amplifier that kicks it up a few notches and a tecsun pl880.

The pl880 isnt made for AM, it's really more for Shortwave radio... if I'd had something geared towards AM, like a JRC NRD535D or Lowe HF225 like I used to have, I suspect CKNT would've been a bit better.

Someone elsewhere reported that CIRA 1350 is on the air, but in searching, they (and I) found that it looks like it went off in 2012.. but the license was renewed just last year.

According to broadcasting-history.ca, "The commission said the short-term renewal would allow for a review of compliance issues including broadcasting messages soliciting funds that violate the Religious Broadcasting Policy, absence of program logs for some time periods and late or incomplete filing of annual returns."

So what exactly is going on here? I'm mildly curious.   Why is it back on and what was the outcome of the review?

Thanks for indulging me around here and educating me when I ask a question.  Ok, I'm stumped, kinda. Im listening to CBC Radio 1 on 91.5, I've heard them say "CBC Radio 1" several times. I'm pretty sure I know what station I have and that would be CBO Ottawa. But why in good heavens gravy did I just hear an id at :30 after that went, "You're listening to CBC Radio 1, 99.3 FM in Bancroft"? (I have no pre-set notion about Bancroft or what ID I should here, so there's no reason for me to IMAGINE I heard that...) I wasn't near my radio, in the next room.. but i'm pretty sure that's what I heard. 99.3 in Bancoft doesn't relay CBO, it relays CBLA and even if they shared programming, each station still ID's individually. (that last part is solely based upon what I found out online via wiki)

A lot of these geographical call letter anomalies came a long time ago. But there's at least one that didn't - and it happened in the 1980s! There's a small 400 watt nothing Christian outlet in a place called Spring Arbour, Michigan that was assigned the letters "KTGG."

How in the world did that happen?

It's a bit lost to history, but it's believed someone at the FCC saw the application using the abbreviation "MI" for Michigan, thought it stood for Missouri and went with a "K" designation. As far as I know, it's still on the air and it still uses that call sign. But how it got through all that red tape unchecked is incredible.

This is such a trivial topic, but at least one guy has taken it to extremes. A radio historian named Thomas White has an incredible outline of where these off "K's and "W"s all appeared in the strangest places. But be prepared to be plunged into a plethora of minutiae. You can see it here.

I got one much newer for you.. what  is now WKFF, but was KBUD.. 102.1 Sardis, Mississippi came about in the early 2000s.. rumor has it that someone at the fcc thought MS meant Missouri and gave it K call letters

There's been a few K grants in Mississippi in the last few years

Here's the tower for Evanov Radio's CIDC-FM 103.5 Orangeville. 30,7000 Watts at 624 feet from a site a few miles east of Orangeville. They are about 35 miles NW of Toronto. The pictures were taken by a friend of mine who lives in about 10-15 minutes away.

Apparently there is some confusion, as the address of record Orangeville City Hall has for CIDC is the old tower site they moved off of in 2000 to come to this site. The old site is supposedly back up, but I didn't see any FM bays on it. I don't know if any of this confusion is because my friend misunderstood something or not

Hello All!

I've heard the same male voice on CBC Radio Station ID's for CBCL 93.5 London and CBLA FM 3 100.9 wingham, so I'm assuming the same guys does ALL of the english CBC Radio IDs.

I'm just curious, who is he and does he work for the CBC doing something else or is he a voiceover/production guy they have contracted out for his services?

Here's the CBCL 93.5 and CBLA FM 3 100.9 "Station ID's" I recorded off the FM signals from 160 miles away(CBCL) and 220 miles away(CBLA FM 3)
And to me, the CBLA FM 3 100.9 audio is better, .. 93.5 sounds a bit lower, modulation wise and a bit muddy. CBLA FM 3 sounds a bit crisper cleaner and louder.

Ok, it isn't a southern Ontario signal but I just had to share this since It was quite an accomplishment to HEAR it then IDENTIFY it!

On Wednesday March 28th, I had fairly consistent "Now 105.7" WBNW Binghamton, NY during "The Elvis Duran Show" in the 9am hour. It would come up fairly strong for a bit, fade down and come back.

Well, about 9:28am I had some french language speech pop up out of nowhere, last about 8 seconds, disappear and not come back. I figured this was going to be a tough one to figure out. It kinda was, but some good detective work really made it kinda easy.

I sent the clip to Pierre Boucher, a Montreal based broadcast engineer who installs and maintains some of the CBC Rebroadcast sites. He immediately recognized the AUDIO PROCESSING as something used by CBC Rebroadcast transmitters. He then identified the content as being "Ici Radio-Canada Première", the CBC's commercial free french language talk network. I also sent the clip to Christopher Arthur who had a french speaking friend listen to it and identified it as Ici Radio-Canada Première! Chris Kadlec also recognized the voice as Catherine Perrin, who is one of the Ici Radio-Canada Première hosts.

Pierre Boucher and I then poured over the relevant licensing databases in Canada to find all the CBC relays on 105.7! WE did find several and I then went out figuring out what was what and I was able to find only ONE CBC Rebroadcast transmitter on 105.7 FM in FRENCH! This is CBAF-FM-2 105.7 Allardville, New Brunswick. Licensed for 100,000 Watts at 423 feet. Distance from the CBAF-FM-2 tower to my antenna is 772.62 miles!

CBAF-FM-2 is a relay of CBAF-FM 88.5 Moncton, New Brunswick about 125 miles away.
Here is the audio from CBAF-FM-2 that I managed to record:

I know there are rules/regulations and license conditions that stipulate where a studio can be, details about programming and such.. but what about administrative functions?

Lets say for instance, your Arctice Radio in Manitoba or another small company with a few.. 3 to 6 or so stations somewhat close together and you wanted to create "operational efficencies".

Is it legal in Canada to have the person who enters orders and does programming logs do it for an entire companie s group of stations from one location?

Do any of the smaller groups actually do something like this? I'm sure with the big groups, like Virgin rADIO and 2day FM and stuff like that.. theres a group music or program director but the amount of business they do would make it hard to hand off some administrative duties remotely.

RCA outputs from my radio, line in to my digital recorder and line out of the digital recorder into my IPhone. Distance from the C F L Zed transmitter to my porch is 103.94 miles/167.27km. Sure, it's 50KW at 76 meters/250 feet but it's a new logging in my book, overcoming weak as heck semi local WFGE State College, PA (70 miles/110km) and often strong as crap semi local WHOT Youngstown, OH (110 mile/177 meters)
