I assembled a pretty good crew for episode 1430 of my podcast, a tribute to when CJCL 1430 went all-sports in 1992. Dan Shulman, Allan Davis, Nelson Millman, Scott Metcalfe and Tim Haffey shared some great stories about this chapter in Toronto radio history.

I did some digging and found the details about Smyth and Smyth's two-day tango in December 2006.

I recall that Stephanie also discussed the lack of Dick Smyth relation on one or both of her "Toronto Mike'd" appearances, in 2016 and 2023 respectively:

https://www.torontomike.com/2016/11/toronto_miked_podcast_episode_206/
https://www.torontomike.com/2023/08/paul-cook-and-stephanie-smyth-toronto-miked-podcast-episode-1311/

Yes, we learned there's absolutely no relation between the Smyths during her first visit, and when she returned with her husband Paul Cook in late August, I addressed it again off the top because so many people believe that Stephanie is Dick's daughter.

On an unrelated note, I was thinking about SOWNY this morning b/c I'm scheduled to record a secret episode in 30 minutes that I think will be of particularly interest to readers here. It should be in the Toronto Mike'd podcast feed by 1pm today. Handy subscription links are here: https://www.torontomike.com/subscribe/

As Steve's unofficial biographer I can confirm he had a show on The Fan 590 with Bruce Dowbiggin in 1996. It was called Double Play and they sold their own ads.

I actually reunited Steve and Bruce recently for a thorough Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett retrospective.

My only beef is the title of "musicologist."   What is a musicologist exactly?  Is there a post secondary course that must be completed and test passed ?  Do you have to complete an internship ?   If Alan Cross is a musicologist, what about John Donabie, David Marsden, old friend Ivar Hamilton, and so many others ?

I had an actual Musicologist on Toronto Mike'd to talk about this. His name is Dr. Mike Daley, and he has a PhD in Musicology. Coincidentally, I had Alan Cross over two weeks later, and asked him about this. Alan says he doesn't use that term to describe himself, even though I've noticed his official bio states "he's also known as a musicologist" as opposed to "he's a musicologist", because he isn't and he knows it.

But he's a great broadcaster and a solid citizen and as pointed out already in this thread, he's an independent contractor and not a Corus employee.

I keep hearing a radio spot for Proline, the come-on to get you to gamble. I though the voice was familiar the first time I heard it, but it didn't quite register. Until it aired a few more times. I'd swear that's John Gallagher, the former City TV sportscaster and ex-member of the Q107 morning show.

Haven't heard him in a long time, and I wondered where he went or what he's up to now. Nice to hear his voice again (if that is, indeed, him.)

John sold his Toronto home and moved home to Halifax during the pandemic. Peter Gross and I worked closely with him pre-pandemic on a wonderful podcast we called Gallagher and Gross Save the World. It was amazing.

I actually have some insight here, as a Great Lakes Brewery partner for several years. Great Lakes Brewery recently opened the GLB Brewpub on Jarvis at Queens Quay, and that's mere steps from Corus Quay.

So that was the spark here. Early next month, I'm actually recording live at GLB Brewpub during an AM640 event, so people like Greg Brady, Kelly Cutrara, Alex Pierson, Dani Stover, etc. will sit down and field my questions.

You'll be able to hear this ep on April 7, and yes, I'm happy to ask the 640 peeps any and all questions you may have.
