Just to piggy back on this... every year I record a special episode of Toronto Mike'd with Ed "Retrontario" Conroy that we call Christmas Crackers and it's a jam-packed two hours of old clips and nuggets and this year's Christmas Crackers is one of the best. It drops in the Toronto Mike'd podcast feed around 8pm tonight.
SOWNY » Goodbye, Bob McCown Podcast » December 8, 2024 11:01 am |
For the record, I've never worked a day in radio. So no, I've never been in the business.
I was a digital marketing manager for B2B software companies who ran the Toronto Mike blog on the side. Then, in 2006, I produced the very first Humble and Fred podcast and when we started doing that daily in 2011 I decided to leave my comfort zone and start my own show.
Tomorrow Mike Richards visits for episode 1595, I just hosted the 17th TMLX event at Palma's Kitchen (listen here - you'll hear Mike Eppel, Larry Fedoruk, Kevin Shea, Dave Charles, Peter Gross, Alan Zweig, Blair Packham, Brad Bradford and many others) and there have been well over 1 million downloads in 2024.
Yes I make money, yes it's still growing, yes there's an amazing FOTM community and many people who contribute to this very forum, from David Marsden to John Donabie to Roger Ashby to Doug Thompson, have been over for chats.
And while I'm here, Mike Stafford will return in 2025. Stay tuned.

How much is Ridley Funeral Home paying you? That's a very conservative business which doesn't need to advertise that much.
Here's Friday's episode of Toronto Mike'd. It's Dave Hodge's annual visit to my home studio to unveil his 100 favourite songs of the calendar year. It's awesome, and this episode has five paying sponsors.
Humble and Fred also have several paying sponsors, including such national brands as Kelseys and Bodog.
Nobody said it was easy, but don't assume no independent podcasts in this country are making money.McCown and Blundell had sponsors as well.
Man, you're annoying. Have a nice night.

When John Donabie visited a few years ago to talk about his illustrious career in radio working at CKFH, CHUM-FM, Q107, CJCL, CFGM, CFRB, CKFM, CKEY, CISS-FM, Jazz-FM and CIUT, his interviews with John Lennon, attending The Last Waltz and so much more, we ended up talking for over two hours. Incredible!

In general I don't listen to many podcasts with Toronto Mike being an exception. His interviews are quite often with media personalities with which I am familiar. I would have no problem listening to a three hour interview with Roger Ashby. I am sure he has many amusing and interesting tales to tell about life in Kitchener, at CKOC and the CHUM Organization. If the subject is one I have a casual interest in, probably one hour is enough for me.
Firstly, thank you for listening. I think Toronto Mike'd episodes average about 75-90 minutes, depending on how it's going and how much time we have.
Carol Off visited Monday and she only had 60 minutes.
When Robert Fisher visited recently, we had more time and it almost went two hours. But damn, was it ever good.
Episode 1000 went 5:40:31, but I'll never do that again, because it almost killed me. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
SOWNY » MuchMusic Launched 40 Years Ago Today » August 31, 2024 8:30 pm |
MuchMusic launched 40 years ago today. There's a great Christopher Ward book about the station, and there's a solid documentary called 299 Queen St. West that's sitting on a hard drive and unavailable due to music licensing issues, but neither does a very good job covering the MuchMusic origin story. So I collaborated with Ed from Retrontario to produce a very thorough and definitive podcast episode about for origin of Much.
It's here if you want to dive in.

Why not ask friend of SOWNY Toronto Mike? Or perhaps Dave and Erin Trafford, the father-daughter team behind Story Studio Network?
Plenty of podcasters make money... I sure do, and I produce Humble and Fred's podcast and they do very well. No terrestrial radio required.

I did some digging and found the details about Smyth and Smyth's two-day tango in December 2006.
I recall that Stephanie also discussed the lack of Dick Smyth relation on one or both of her "Toronto Mike'd" appearances, in 2016 and 2023 respectively:
Yes, we learned there's absolutely no relation between the Smyths during her first visit, and when she returned with her husband Paul Cook in late August, I addressed it again off the top because so many people believe that Stephanie is Dick's daughter.
On an unrelated note, I was thinking about SOWNY this morning b/c I'm scheduled to record a secret episode in 30 minutes that I think will be of particularly interest to readers here. It should be in the Toronto Mike'd podcast feed by 1pm today. Handy subscription links are here:
