Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

A Hundred watts on a dead man’s chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil be done at the ville named by a tree.
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

The mate was fixed by the bump'n' tunes
Broadcast’n’ on 93.9 FM in mono for good range.
And IC’s throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by compressed sound with levels almost going to ten
And there they lay all good listeners to the Music Zone
Like break o’ day travellin' on the Queen "E" and listenin'
Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum

Anybody else heard this station yet?  Clues are in the song above.

The ville named after a tree. Hmmm. Sounds like Oakville. I have a doctor's appointment in the NE part of the town on December 11. I will check it out.

Would have to wonder why this operation would want to be first-adjacent to CBL-FM, a nearby Class C1 broadcaster that is owned by the CBC and who's signal is protected in that area.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

Has anyone caught and listened to this signal?

I am in Hamilton with a large antenna outside that may catch this, although no luck so far.

Is it indeed Oakville where this signal originates from?

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

I was in North east Oakville [Trafalgar/Dundas area] on Friday for a doctor's appointment and the 93.9 signal was relatively clear with some minor distortion but no interference from either CBC or WBLK. No announcers or ads when I was listening. I did hear one promo but the audio was somewhat muffled. No ID at the 10am top of the hour. Songs I heard included Isaac Hayes Theme From Shaft, Little River Band Reminising and the long version of All By Myself by Eric Carmen. Signal disappeared shortly after heading north of Dundas on Winston Churchill.

Aye landlubber, the Hammer is too far up land to get these waves,
Radio signals travel far better up at sea, you see...

Girlington may get some action but ships weighing their anchor in Sauga have a much better chance to catch this fish.

The playlist is quite diverse compared to any other station with a healthy dose of 70's, 80's and 90's along with novelty Dr. Demento style songs.  For example:

Dolly Parton - 9 to 5
The Bangles - Manic Monday
Star Trekkin' - The Firm
Proclaimers - 500 miles
Abba - Dancing Queen
Notorious Big - Big poppa
Snoop Dogg - What's my name
Lina Ronstadt - That will be the day

Stereo is enabled now with full RDS data showing most song titles.  Even has a few station ID's but no announcers yet.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

I heard it while near Dundas and Neyagawa, heading north on Neyagawa and east on Burnhamthorpe to Mississauga. Lost it on Ridgeway crossing the 403.

Heard The Immigrant Song by Zeppelin, Sad Eyes by Robert John, and a couple others that were familiar but I couldn’t look them up as I was driving.

I also heard a promo, which included something about the Spirit of Radio! Had a fair bit of interference so I couldn’t hear the whole thing.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

I will be back in Oakville on January 8 in the Bronte area. I will see if the signal is a bit less distorted than it was in the Trafalgar/Dundas area.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

I remember there was a pirat in brantford playing christmas music in 2015.
I think it was on ither 96.9 or 97.1
There was no IDS and it was mostly classic christmas music.
There was also a muslim pirat on 97.9 in pickering.
Does the station your talking about have a website?
I'm in Scarborough, so I cant listen.
I looked up the zone 93.9 but I only found an american station.
I tried oakville then missisauga but only an american station came up.
Does any one know if this zone has a website?

I just remembered another song that I heard - “Would I Lie to You” by Charles & Eddie.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

I was out in Oakville today. Signal had a bit of picket fencing in West Oakville [Lakeshore/ Bronte Rd] but was still very listenable. Signal was excellent in Central and Downtown parts of the town. Heading back to Toronto on the QEW, the signal began to deteriorate around Erin Mills Parkway and was completely gone by Hurontario. Still no jocks, ads or call letters. Just Spirit 103.

Spirit 103 on 93.9? Is that indeed the frequency?

As referenced in my initial post of this thread, the station's name is MusicZone.  Signal mainly covers Oakville along with east Burlington and west Mississauga but can be received as far away as Etobicoke in certain spots.

The station liners are fairly well produced, and most of them do have a "spirit of radio" sound bite.
It appears the station operator did record "MusicZone, 93.9" using his own voice, which is on all the station ID's.  Voice is male with a Caribbean accent.

Well, who ever it is is doing a great job.
He should get an LP FM licence from the CRTC.
I think the market could support an LP FM radio station.

I tried that. All that came up was Music Boxx which is some sort of music school located in Bronte.

There would be a significant challenge to get an LP FM licence in Oakville due to the proximity of Toronto and Hamilton.  I'm almost certain there's no FM frequencies available that could serve Oakville, not even low power.

The station was off the air this past weekend, most likely for maintenance, as the signal seems better now.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

Even given how crowded the dial is around Oakville, seems like using 93.9 is asking for trouble, what with CBL right there next door on 94.1.

107.5? 104.9? Or even the currently vacant 103.9? All would be less obvious as sources of interference.

January 15, 2025 9:50 am  #28

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

Also, 103.9, 100.3, 106.3 or 95.7 could be used.
I don't know about 104.9, How far does the signal of CHIM's transmitter in hamilton reach?

January 15, 2025 9:54 am  #29

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

103.9 seems the most likely, simply because there was already a GTA station there, although very few could get it. I'm just not sure how likely the CRTC would be to want to hand out a licence to someone who occupied the airwaves illegally.

Re: Arrr me mateys, there's a Zone plundering the airwaves

They hand out licences to rule breakers all the time.
Example, a station in scarborough that called itself multicultural, but turned out to be all tamil language with some hindi and tagalog musical programming.
AVR which was mostly a musical ipod untill it rebranded to Voices radio.
