We arrived Monday afternoon to warm weather. But a cold front swept in overnight and today only got up to +10 C. The cold spell is supposed to last for two weeks.

Outside of CHU, our time signal station, CFRX is Canada's last shortwave station. There use to be similar 49 meter band outlets from Halifax, Montreal and Calgary. CBC had stations in St. Johns and Vancouver

Just out of curiosity, can you receive AM740 at night where you are located. Their 750 mile protected coverage area reaches to just south of Tampa.

Never had any success yet with that. Right now I'm getting something on 740. Sounds like an all sports station. I get stations from Chigago, New York and Cincinnati, but never from Toronto or Detroit.

How about 860? Should be easily identifiable as French.
We have a local station here in the Tampa Bay area, WGUL 860 KHZ. Right wing talk.

Just out of curiosity, can you receive AM740 at night where you are located. Their 750 mile prggotected coverage area reaches to just south of Tampa.

That would be WYGM Orlando. They are 50000 watts day and night but the night pattern is strictly east/west. On the Atlantic side, the signal runs between Deltona and Melbourne. On the Gulf side, Leesburg to Lakeland including the Metro Tampa area.

When I had it on here earlier this evening,in Seminole, just outside St Pete, the signal was listenable but far from perfect. On the SINPO scale I would say it was 44343.

I would imagine AM740 would be available further north in Jacksonville or the panhandle. There is a 740 in Montgomery, Alabama [WMSP] but 233 watts at night wouldn't travel very far.

On the trip home every year, we always stop for the night in northern GA. Zoomer 740 always comes in there inside a hotel room using only my Walkman radio.

Speaking of Toronto DX radio - do the CN Tower FMs ever get captured far away? Never heard of these travelling far besides southern ontario

With the closure of time station CHU this month, CFRX is the last remaining shortwave station in Canada (that is the last with a Canadian-based shortwave transmitter, as opposed to a Canadian programmer buying time on Radio Miami or elsewhere). How long before it bites the dust? I can't see Bell being interested in spending money once repairs, new parts, or a new transmitter becomes necessary.

I've never exactly been sure why it was there in the first place. Not sure where the transmitter is (I think it's at the same site as RB's towers), but I have trouble picking it up in Toronto - and that's where the station is based!
Who do they think is actually listening to this 1KW signal on 6.07 MHz, if they can even get it?

I keep hearing they're looking to close it down, but it's maintained, I believe, by a local Ham club who work with the engineering guys to keep it plugging along. BTW I sit corrected, the original mandate was to make CFRB available to the North but over time, the pattern was changed to cover the excited states.

On that occasion, my phone was out of juice and was recharging at home. There's no point in carrying something if its battery is dead.
And it's not a Walkman. It's a small Sangean about the size of a deck of cards, which gets great DX reception, especially on the AM side and comes with 19 presets. I actually like it better than my phone in some ways. Too bad there was nothing to listen to on it on the particular Saturday morning in question.
But that wasn't the radio's fault. It was the programmers who decided that Saturday mornings are a dead zone, so just air filler.

My phone is on the kitchen wall here in London ON. I would need an awfully long phone cord to reach Florida.

The Sangean. Is that the DT 110? I have two of those. One here and one in Florida. Great little radio, aren't they?

It's the Sangean DT 200X and it's a very fun little radio, for those who still want to listen to the medium off air.
Speaker is pretty much useless, but otherwise it's one of my favourtes for its size and cost.
