While most who visit here are well aware of what a VPN is for, there are some who have no idea. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and essentially fools other sites into thinking you're in a different country.
That's a big deal if you want to watch something on, say CBS.com, whose videos are geoblocked in Canada over rights issues. Using a VPN set to the U.S. eliminates the problem and you can watch or (in the case of some radio stations) listen to whatever you want.
But a VPN is generally subscription based and many simply don't want to pay for something they may not really need. And that's where Proton VPN comes in. It has a pay version, but it also provides what I'm told is an excellent - and just as importantly limitless and fast - free network which will never cost you a dime.
The catch? While most VPNs allow you to set for almost any country on earth, the freebie only gives you access to three places - The Netherlands, Japan and - here's the key - the United States. Which means you can download it gratis, set it to the States and watch whatever you want from there.
A caveat: I have a paid VPN (Nord) which is great. So I really don't know the Proton product. But many reviews, including this one, say it's the best freebie out there and works great.
You can check it out here and happy viewing!

I also have a Nord VPN and am extremely happy with the product. When I decided to purchase a VPN, I did my research and found out that Nord and Express are considered the Gold Standard of subscription VPN's and almost always rank first/second in product reviews.

I rarely have an issue with Nord, and if I do, their customer service is excellent. Right now as I type this, my IP is, for no very good reason, in Charlotte. Easily changed and very useful, especially when it comes to watching the new Doctor Who episodes from England. The Christmas special is coming later this month.

Have used IP Vanish for a couple of years and never had an issue..at home or when using it on a Firestick while traveling the World. They do have an "automatic renewal " every year and this year I noticed many of the others (Nord, Express) were offering much better deals...2 years plus for what I was paying for one year of IP Vanish.
I informed them I wanted to cancel..they asked why. I told them and they offered me another year.. at less than half price. Lesson learned. You have to call these guys out...just like the major Canadian carriers.

I think the Surfshark service is decent; I'm into my 4th year of use.
I define Surfshark right on my router (Asus RT-AX86U Pro running Merlin firmware) so all devices go thru Surfshark VPN unless I explicitly exclude them (such as my Teksavvy IPTV which must use Teksavvy internet directly). We do have the Surfshark VPN app loaded on our devices for 1-off type situations.
I used to use Surfshark via OpenVPN but when I bit & went to Teksavvy Fibre I upgraded my router so i could use the Surfshark Wireguard VPN protocol to take better advantage of Fibre speeds.
