Jack Jones dead at 86

The popular singer known for such hits as "Call Me Irresponsible", the not-so-politically-correct (nowadays) "Wives and Lovers" as well as the voice of "The Love Boat" TV theme passed away Wednesday night after a two-year battle with leukemia.

His music would have made up a portion of CFRB's playlist.

I believe Jack Jones was also host of CHCH's The Palace, a variety show that was taped at Hamilton Place 1979-80

Jack Jones had 12 singles in the top ten US Adult Contemporary charts and 3 number one songs.  Jack released 60 albums in his career.  He also won 2 Grammy awards for best male vocalist.

Here is his 1979 album Nobody Does It Better which had a cover shot of Toronto's skyline behind Jack standing  by a tree near the Toronto Islands..

And let's not forget his father Allan Jones was the romantic lead in the Marx Brother's movie "A Night at the Opera."

Funny how none of the obits I've read mention what I remember as one of his bigger hits in the Top 40 era, "The Race is On." I believe it made the CHUM Chart when most of that middle of the road stuff never did. The fact that it was only 1:47 didn't hurt.

"The Race Is On" reached #20 on CHUM. The obit that Paul posted did make one reference to it, stating 'On the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, Jones scored nine top 10 singles, including three No. 1s — “The Race Is On” in 1965, “The Impossible Dream” in 1966 and “Lady” in 1967.'

It’s too bad they didn’t put more effort into most album covers back in the day, they were fairly bland as one can see here!

Of his 26 songs to chart on the Hot 100, the most successful were Wives & Lovers #14 and The Race Is On #15.
