I’m pretty sure this will prove to be a stunt in the end, but a station in Durango, Colorado – KKDG, now called Doggy FM – has switched formats from Top 40 to music for dogs and their owners. Yes, it’s a radio station for dogs.
The format involves a range of tunes that are tied in one way or another to canines. “With many Durango residents being dog owners, [general manager Jack] Llewellyn saw it as the ideal opportunity to engage listeners at a time when radio is facing stiff competition from podcasts and music streaming services.”
So what can you expect when you listen to some sound "bites?" “One of Doggy FM's key features is a collection of soothing music with soft melodies and rhythms, specifically created to help alleviate stress and anxiety in dogs.”
A sample from their playlist reveals the nature of the songs:
The Reason A Dog – Aerosmith
The Puppy Song – Harry Nilsson
Shannon – Henry Gross
Rover – Jethro Tull
Rain Dog – Tom Waits
Old Shep – Elvis Presley
Me & You & A Dog Named Boo - Lobo
There are more, but you get the idea.
Is this permanent? It would surprise me. Like the infamous Kingston format “The Pole,” I’m guessing they’re prepping for something else sooner than later, but that hasn’t been sniffed out yet. Still, anything’s possible. There’s an actual cable TV channel in the U.S. called Dog TV, meant to be left on all day while the owner goes to work.
But what if this new fur-mat caught on? Radio is a dog-eat-dog profession and a ruff one. Maybe they can really lick their competition if they stick with it and don’t paws for too many spots. After all, it ain't over till it's Rover.
Curiousity may have killed the cat, but it won’t hurt you or your dog if you want to listen live here.

How long did it take you to come up with all those puns? Well done!

I'm just worried that this new format will make listeners "flea" somewhere else...

The station will soon be done like dinner.

I predict it will have a "ruff" go in the ratings!
PS - Awwww darn - I didn't see you used "Ruff" already. I thought I was being so original. Sigh! :D

If he were still alive, maybe they could have hired Bob Barker to do mornings.

Well done! With all the turmoil in the world, it is refreshing to see SOWNY members have not lost their sense of humour.

I can't wait for their contests, where they'll take the fifth "collar."

It didn't last long, as most here knew it couldn't. The owners of a Colorado station that played music for dogs has switched format to AAA, a totally different music mix than the set for pooch preferences.
“Radio Free Durango” will play a mix of music including adult alternative, singer-songwriter, acoustic, Americana, indie, rock, soul, folk, funk, blues, reggae, international, and more. The station will also include songs from regional Colorado bands such as Elder Grown, Stillhouse Junkies, and the Garrett Young Collective."
You might say they couldn't "flea" their old format fast enough.

If someone opens an all Haitian music station it will eat this one alive in the ratings.

They should keep the doggy format for a frequency humans can't hear, kinda like 'Sauga 960.

Another station is trying this gimmick, this time in Scotland. The pitch: keeping your dogs calm when people are setting off fireworks.
They'll be arf and running for a week starting November 4th.
