Is it playing fine RIGHT NOW?

It is for me as I type this, although there does seem to be some dropouts and music restarting, which I didn't hear before this.

Sounds like they fixed the glitches. Station sounds great!

And if the owner spends as much on marketing as he does in Toronto for FLOW (zero) nobody's gong to hear it.

Flow 98.7 is @ the CNE in the Food Building for Food day every year.
The morning (or mid day person?) is the announcer that is live on location encouraging people to spin the wheel. (er, press the button, the wheel has gone digital as of recent years)

They also went live on location Canada day, so they are out there...

Re: CKOC Website is up

Like others on here, I'm skeptical this new format for CKOC will work in the long-term, but I do appreciate the new owner's attempt to at least try to air something that is more interesting than business talk.

The Hamilton market, on the whole, hasn't made a profit since 2019.

BOUNCE and KX combine for 68% of local stations' ratings.

40% of market revenue is national spots, of which 820/1150 will get almost none.

It's not happening.

How much does it cost for Flow to be @ the CNE?

Re: CKOC Website is up

As of now, they are broadcasting on the AM band and Bloomberg 1150 would appear to be no more.

Re: CKOC Website is up

The Bloomberg 1150 website is gone and so is CHAM's Funny 820 on iHeart. Interestingly, though, that the CKWW 580 site remains up under the old brand. So perhaps the new owner is concentrating on one market at a time for now.

Re: CKOC Website is up

Checked a recording I made from 4 a.m. earlier today and 1150 was dead air with WAVO-Rock Hill SC ("The Light FM") underneath.  I wonder how many actual Bloomberg Radio listeners there were and if they noticed?

Over on 900, WURD-Philadephia was taking phone calls from listeners

Hey, I need WAVO for the logbook. I hate you!

From Radio Insight:

CKOC & CKWW Relaunch With Classic Hits

The article appears to be wrong about one thing - it looks like the new owner has made up his mind about what 820 is going to be. Although I'm still not quite sure how to define its format.

Also, on air personality Kara Ro, who works for both stations, was a former professional boxer? Who knew?

Re: CKOC Website is up

Been listening to CKOC today. No commercials so far and, after Kent Chambers in the morning, I haven't heard any other on-air personalities. Must be some sort of "soft launch" or something?

Re: CKOC Website is up

Gave CKOC a listen yesterday. Very impressed by the music mix. But music on AM is a tough sell these days, especially with FM stations like The Grand essentially playing the same music. I do wish them luck.

Re: CKOC Website is up

Have to say I thought that the Hamilton Spectator did an excellent job covering the CHML shutdown, with multiple articles and angles on the shutdown.

But so far they've been AWOL on the resurrection of two other major stations in their city - CKOC and CHAM. I would have thought that might generate at least an article about the changes at not one but two different long running frequencies.

But so far, nothing.

Re: CKOC Website is up

Well for one thing, it's their job to know what's going on in their city.

And for another, I sent their newsroom tips address an email about this a few days ago. So if they've read it, they should know about it.

It's different enough from The Grand-the newly vamped 1150 is softer and more 80's mixed in with little to no 60's. As well, at least when I used to be in Hamilton- The Grand suffered a lot of interference particularly downtown and toward Burlington-not sure if has since improved-if not this may give 1150 the advantage. The Grand musically to me at least is actually more interesting and more in the original CKOC spirit.

I will say though, that the station engineering needs to work on the sound a lot, even for AM.  I find that the processing is way overdone.  I know that CKOC's audio was quite compressed during its heyday, but at least there was the sense of detail that came through a bit better.  Audio seemed to breath a little more.  Certainly having a quality Delco AM radio in my mom's 1980 Citation made it sound a lot better too.  But even in mall store ceiling speakers at Eastgate in Hamilton, when hearing CKOC piped through a Pioneer monster receiver (which had a lousy AM section topping out near 2.5 KHz response), it sounded way more open.

Sometimes when I tune in, it may take five seconds to pick out the song because it comes out sounding like mush.  I notice when some songs slowly fade out, the sound opens up and become oh so slightly punchier, because the processing is getting closer to it's threshold, and the level increases release more quickly.

Per Jody's comment, I find 820s sound even worse. The IDs are difficult to understand too

Re: CKOC Website is up

Kara Ro is now out of the "Personalities" slideshow rotation thing on the home page. Other than that, they don't appear to have a "personalities" page.

Re: CKOC Website is up

If they're purging her from the website because she's no longer there (how do you leave a day after they officially signed on?) they obviously forgot this reference to her in the "Contests" section.

She's still on Windsor's site, where she''s based. My guess would be an issue with the remote VTing, and they've removed mention of her until they get it sorted out.

It's been a few days of music playing on AM frequencies with little to no prior listenership. This is likely the only place anyone's talking about it. Short of scanning the band every day, nobody's going to notice until they market, or at least send out a press release.

I wasn't suggesting she'd left Windsor, just that perhaps doing two shows on two different stations might be too much. We'll see if her profile returns to the OC site.
