Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

Poor Larry Zolf - the longtime journalist, humorist and media personality campaigned for years (only half in jest) for a Senate appointment without ever being seriously considered. Turns out he was born a few decades too soon. If he was around today he'd quite possibly be appointed governor general.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

The first time I heard Adler it was on CFRB which was carrying his syndicated talk show.
On that occasion, I was in my car and nearly drove off the road when I heard him say it would be OK not to root for a sports team if you found out one of its players was gay.
I thought to myself, well that's the end of that guy's career.
But, no.
Then he turned up as a far-right wing commentator for the defunct Sun TV news network run by Ezra Levant, who went on to found Rebel news,  Which is, of course, a far-right Internet site dedicated to Islamophobia and the support of neo Nazis.
Now we see in the post by Hansa that Adler believes being in the Senate is living a lie.
Furthermore a friend of mine told me he worked in Winnipeg with Adler years ago when Adler was a sloppy left-wing slob with poor hygiene.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

It speaks volumes that they dumped this news into the weekend.

Edit. The more I think of it the more it stinks. We need a full, honest chronicle on the actions and deliberation that led to this decision.

Right but why this arse? Now he's in a position to potentially hurt a whole lot more people. By any normal measure this should be a big scandal.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

Adler tried to defend his choice on Sunday's Roy Green Show, despite being confronted by some of his past statements. I don't buy it, but he was allowed to make his case.

You can hear it here.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

I do not have any inside information on how Adler got this appointment, or how he also got a Queen's jubilee medal.
I suppose because he is a rampant right-winger he won favour among the monarchists who have some power.
But just don't get it.
He has no expertise in anything, no record of public service, and nothing but being a rather two-bit right wing ideologue who had parents who fled Hungary to escape the Soviets.
He isn't even a journalist. He's just a guy who gabbed on radio and a bit of TV.
Even Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin had some actual real professional qualifications -- and look how they turned out in the senate.

Because of that Trudeau idiot. That's how.

I'm assuming you're referring to the Senate appointment. Trudeau Jr. wasn't in charge when the Queen's Diamond Jubilee happened in 2012.

I've come to think those Diamond Jubilee medals weren't all that rare.

IIRC, both Oakley and Derringer got one.

I know they were handed out in other fields as well...I'm aware of at least one high school teacher who received one.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

I was never an Adler fan and like many talk show hosts he seemed a bit full of himself.  However didn't he move away from the right side of the coin some time ago?  I remember about six or seven years ago, he was criticized for his new more liberal stance on various issues, and not long after faded away from his radio show.

In terms of being a professional or qualified, I didn't know there were specific qualifications for a senator.    I thought senators came from various backgrounds and all achieved a certain level of notoriety in their field and profession.  The senate website has more info on this..https://sencanada.ca/en/senators/

Jerry Agar was just on and told John Moore that he thinks Adler jumped ship to being Liberal in order to suck up to Trudeau to "apply for the job"  (to my knowledge, you don't apply like it's a job flipping burgers).       I guess Agar thinks that Adler saw this job coming years-ago so he decided to change stripes!

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

In his so-far only radio interview with Roy Green on Sunday, Adler tried to explain away his political flip flop, insisting he never took one side or another, but dealt with everything on a case-by-case basis. You can hear that interview and his rationale at this link.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

A senator's salary is $178,100.00 with mandatory retirement at 75. Adler is about to turn 70 years old. Probably the best gig he has ever had. Senators need to serve six years to get a pension. Adler will fall just short of this.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

Heard right-winger Adler for years on 640, until he was gone.  Last time I heard him, he had become a chorus member for the Sunny Ways Singers.  No way he would have won the Senate lottery if he hadn't suddenly started promoting the cult of JT.  Sell-out, and hypocrite.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

The appointment is getting some blow back....

August 19, 2024Treaty One Territory, ManitobaAMC CommunicationsTreaty One Territory, Winnipeg – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is offended and disappointed by the recent appointment of Charles Adler to the Senate of Canada as recommended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to represent Manitoba.AMC is alarmed because Charles Adler’s past comments, in which he referred to Indigenous people as “uncivilized boneheads” and criticized First Nations Leadership and communities with grossly offensive language, are a stark reminder of the systemic racism that plagues our society. These are not just passing remarks.  They were and still are hurtful, but they also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and misconceptions about First Nations now that this is once again being brought to light because of this appointment. The AMC filed formal complaints against Adler’s vulgar and racist commentary in the past, and it is obvious that Canada and the Prime Minister have turned a blind eye to these offensive views when making this appointment to the Senate. The AMC is asking both the Governor General of Canada and the Prime Minister to reconsider and recall this appointment as they view it as a step backward in the ongoing efforts towards reconciliation and the recognition of First Nations rights in Canada.Grand Chief Cathy Merrick expressed the collective outrage felt by many: “The appointment of Charles Adler to the Senate is a grave insult to all First Nations in Manitoba and across Canada.  Senators are supposed to be accomplished Canadians from various professional backgrounds. They introduce bills, propose new laws, suggest amendments to legislation passed by the House of Commons, review public policy and debate issues.  His racist comments do not indicate a modicum of respect, equality, and justice that are supposed to guide our society. How can any First Nation feel that his reviews of legislation impacting reserves, treaties, and inherent rights would be even remotely favourable to the original peoples of these lands? Did Canada not learn from the situation surrounding former Senator Lynn Beyak?”The AMC calls on the Governor General and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider this appointment and to prioritize individuals who truly represent the values of inclusion, respect, and reconciliation. We also urge the public to stand with us in condemning this appointment and to hold our leaders accountable for the decisions they make in shaping our country’s future. The AMC will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of First Nations Peoples and will not remain silent in the face of such blatant racism and disrespect. For more information, please contact:Communications Team

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

Apparently, he's suddenly become "unavailable" for interviews with media, including former co-worker Alex Pierson at AM640, who tried to get him to come on her show on Tuesday. He was also supposed to be on Jim Richards' show in the 5-6 PM hour the day before. But they said on air they 'weren't able to get in touch with him.'

If anyone should know how bad this looks, it has to be a guy who did this for a living for decades and would almost certainly have excoriated anyone who did what he's doing right now.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

I saw an interview with him where he said he took the appointment because he's 70 years old and he can only be a senator until he's 75.  So apparently taking the appointment to the body he calls a sewer isn't so bad when you can take the money and perks for only five years... and he can obviously stand the stink for that short space of time.
Disgusting.

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

As I asked on this very board, several years ago, would Faux News hosts change their tune if they moved to a different network?

In other words, are they simply spewing the owner's party line, or do they believe all that crap?

Likewise Adler, when he had a show. Was he mouthing what the bosses wanted to hear, or what he truly believed?

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

I can't entirely answer your question but I once worked for a time with John (J.D.) Roberts, when he was doing radio/TV in Toronto.

He certainly did not strike me as the Fox News type. In fact, his first stateside gig was with the CBS affiliate in Miami.

What changed?

(And don't get me started on Michael Coren...)

Re: Senator Charles Adler...?

What changed?

He got passed over for the anchor position at the CBS Evening News

To be fair though, while there isn't much of a line at Fox between "news" and "opinion", Roberts has never been an "opinion" host.
