Local Radio In Trouble? Not In Cottage Country!

Whenever I have travelled up to the Muskokas over the past few years, I have been impressed at the number and variety of local radio stations available.  Dan Sys features market profiles of various regions from time to time on the RadioWest.ca site.  Today he features local radio you hear in the Barrie/Orillia region, Ontario's beautiful Cottage Country..

Re: Local Radio In Trouble? Not In Cottage Country!

97.7 MAX-FM "Wasaga Beach" has no presence in the "Beach" itself and hasn't for at least seven years, so the logo shown is very much dated.

At least their website now lists Collingwood first on their coverage list.

When I last listened, those many years ago, they were doing a kind of simulcasting thing with their Orillia counterpart effectively covering a larger area with the exact same content. So if you were in located between the two areas of signal coverage (which was/is fairly large for each) you really had no alternative to the type of music you wanted but to listen to the one with the better reception - where-ever it was you were.

Things sure have changed. I remember in the late 70's when CHAY's "Beautiful" format was the only FM signal available in cottage country. At one time on the northbound 400 there was a large billboard advertising CHAY for the next 300 kilometres.

The transmitter site and COL are the only things Wasaga Beach for that station... the studios are now in the former CKCB building on Highway 26, while the transmitter is at Klondike Park, on the Beach's southern outskirts.

Where's Hunters Bay Radio in that list?  88.7 CKAR Huntsville - truly local, and in the heart of the Muskokas.

I remember when 105.5 in Huntsville was called “More FM” about 20 years ago. Their tagline was “More music, more value!”

One of the more unique taglines.

For years now Max FM in Collingwood/Wasaga and Orillia have been totally different stations and dropped  simulcasting. Orillia is alternative and new rock while Collingwood/Wasaga is what their logo says 70's-90's..  They will likely never be one, but Wasaga and Collingwood are so built up now, they could almalgamate.  Wasaga has almost as many people as Collingwood.

Its funny how all of the stations are classic hits - it does get tiresome to hear something like John Mellancamp and Kim Mitchell etc always being played,  no matter what station.

+1

Also, over in the Kawarthas, you can have a listen to Canoe FM on 100.9 (and they recently fired up a small repeater in Minden for improved reception in the area).

Out of the 25 shown, 3 are classic hits.

Is that 97.1 relay already on the air? Will have to aim ne, as it's only 20 miles or so from my DX site in north Kawarthas. Canoe is one of my listening regulars...

Max FM Orillia was my regular choice while I lived in Collingwood, even with the drop out and sketchy signal in places. I miss it up here in the GSA.

Sorry...  my bad...

Canoe FM received approval for the Minden Hills area transmitter this past May, and it has to be operational by May 8th of 2025.  (I must have confused an earlier application / hearing date).  Correct, it will be 97.1 Mhz at 27 watts, and approx. 84 meters EHAAT.

Friends of ours have a cottage in the area (Carnarvon) and they always have a radio tuned to 100.9 in the kitchen area.  They got me hooked on the station back in 2005, and now when ever I'm in the area I tune them in.  Never had reception problems while in Minden, but that has been in the vehicle...

Wally Lennox, who retired as VP of Engineering for Bell, but was also chief engineer for Astral, Standard and Telemedia, is on the Board of CKAR and technical advisor. They may be looking for a PD.

I've done some work for both CKAR and Canoe FM. Both are successful community radio stations.

The station is still licensed to Wasaga Beach, plus the logo shown is current according to their website:

Thanks. At that power I doubt it'll cause me any DX issues on the channel, and 100.9 does well enough here to listen. (Strong signals will override it if I deliberately null the station).

Re: Local Radio In Trouble? Not In Cottage Country!

Those of you saying  the "Muskokas" would be risking the wrath of the late Dick Smyth. Dick used to say there is only one " Muskoka"...singular !!!

Listening to 97.7 MAX FM yesterday and a little today they very much do have a presence in Wasaga.  The on air announcer was talking about the Wasaga Beach area in various breaks, Wasaga Beach Cruiser Show, Wasaga Beach Fun Run etc. In addition most of the commercials I heard were for Wasaga/Collingwood businesses.

I didn't hear the morning show so I don't know what the news is like.  They did have a news update package at 12 noon. Three of the seven news stories were local with brief sports.   Weather update was at the beginning and end of the 4 minute cast.

I do at home RA, I cannot while driving the company vehicle while working, I do CBC 1 most of the day now until 2 pm, then 105.3 The Beat has a throwback show on until 6, I actually don't mind hearing the dance type stuff from the past for a few hours a day , it helps keep me alert while driving. Thanks for the link.
