A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

Here is a picture of CHLK 88.1 in Perth ON.  The station became  MY FM a few weeks back after rebranding from 88.1 Lake FM.  The station with the Grey trim and backporch is at 43 Wilson St. West.  Photo from RadioWest..

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

Reminds me of the original home of CFNY in Brampton, back in the day.  The early few years of 102.1 FM was the best radio station I ever heard.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

This station is small-town enough that they announce the names of people in the area who’ve recently passed away, and which funeral homes are looking after the arrangements - yet the music they play is surprisingly relatively contemporary, as opposed to “easy listening”, which one might expect from a small station in a rural community. My family and I were in Perth in January visiting my mother-in-law, who often has the station on in the background, and I found myself singing along to the playlist several times! They also have a Big Band show on Sunday mornings.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

I was a big fan of HITZ FM and the 'White House of rock'.

So - was it haunted?

I am travelling to Ottawa next Wednesday from Sudbury , I will have to check out the 88.1 frequency as I get near the area.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

From the time it first went on the air until just a couple years ago, CJWL in Ottawa was in a quaint, little old house on York St. in the Byward Market.

About 100 years ago when I was in university, I used to call Kristie Knight in the evening when I was supposed to be studying 😄 She was great, and she always took the time to talk for a few minutes if she was able.

And whenever I drive past a place in Milton on Hwy 25 heading north out of town, I think of Hairball at the Hardball.

Perth being southwest of Ottawa, you might not have much luck getting it.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

Many decades ago, CHML was once located at 848 Main Street East in Hamilton and the CKDS-FM studios were located in a converted house adjacent to the building at 11 Springer Avenue. In 1986, both stations would move to their current location of 875 Main Street West, which now also houses CING-FM.

I never witnessed any paranormal shenanigans though I was there rather briefly. I think being a believer helps too and I'm not one.

I also remember being told that house was a stop (if not the last) on the Underground Railway.

875 Main Street West was the former site of the Westdale Hotel where Paddy Greens Bar was located. One of the last establishments to have a "Gentlemans" and "Ladies and Escorts" entrance.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

Z103.5 (DC 103 as it was known then) originated in an old house on Broadway in Orangeville. I was on staff when we went on air on May 1st, 1987. It was cozy, but it served our needs. I was long gone by they time they moved to Etobicoke.
I believe the house on Broadway is now a dental practice.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

Other radio stations still in houses include Lindsay's CKLY on Kent Street West, and Peterborough's Trent Radio (CFFF) at the corner of George Street & Parkhill Road.

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

The first full time radio gig I had was in Trail, BC.  The station, then CJAT was in an old Canada Post office.
So I guess you can say I started out in the mail room.

One of the many stations being sold by Bell Media. Glad you're no longer there. You might have only been able to get a job working for Canada Post instead!

Re: A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House

I would have loved to have made the kind of money I would have working for Canada Post.
That old radio station paid me 500 dollars a month back in 1978.
I'm sure a good unionized job at Canada Post would have been much better.

Orangevillian here (until 1991, that is) - I wish I could remember that momentous day but I sadly don’t!

And here was CKWR's first home a half a century ago at 1342 King Street East in Kitchener, Ontario.
