Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

Frasier is the latest program that will be making a comeback in the future.  But this time on CBS Paramount+.
Bill Brioux has the details on this and a few other reboots...

Re: Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

Will a Canadian source (City TV?) air the new Frasier?
(Sort of like how City TV already aired episodes of Twilight Zone?)
Or are Canadians going to be stuck having to pay for Paramount+ ?

Just FYI, the Twilight Zone reboot has been cancelled by CBS/Paramount. So it will not be back on City. It never did live up to the original or even some of the later reboots, IMHO.

No launch date for the show has been set.  Still no word even if Daphne and Niles (Jane Leeves and David Hyde Pearce) will be returning.  So the series is still probably a year away.

Will this reboot ever appear? Kelsey Grammer says he's now read a script - and he insists it was very good.

I know it’s just fan art but this would be a pretty good change up on things

Haaaaa!  That's really cool!  I really love the echoey overdub up segments from the end theme to give the trailer the eerie feeling.

Re: Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

After more than a year of hearing about this, it's finally actually official - Frasier is returning. But it won't be like the show you remember.

Frasier will take place in a different city and will be "surrounded by new characters, with original Frasier cast members not expected to be series regulars but could make guest appearances."

It will be on Paramount+ so if you want to see it, you'll probably need a subscription. That service is available in Canada, so it's doubtful they'd sell it to a Crave or a Showcase here.

Frasier was the least interesting character on the show. I don't see this working with a new cast.

As with most large cast sitcoms [Cheers, WKRP, Mary Tyler Moore, Barney Miller, Bob Newhart, Green Acres to name a few]  there is no one character that is hilarious on their own. The interaction between them creates the humour plus all of these series had great script writers.

This is very true.  Mary Tyler Moore wasn't the funny one in her show, nor was Jerry Seinfeld.  It was the quirky supporting cast members interacting that made these shows and the others listed click.  Frasier Crane is a well known character and nobody plays the snob better than Kelsey Grammar.  The Frasier role is more eccentric and unusual than many main characters, but still believable.  It will be a good supporting cast and the interactions that will determine if the new Frasier becomes popular.  Main personalities like Frasier or Newhart are the ones that tie the "cast of characters" together.

It will come down to the writing, especially with a new cast. Is the new series being written by the people who wrote the original show? If not, I think the combination of new cast and different writers  makes it unlikely this will work.

Re: Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

Slowly but surely, we're learning more about this reboot. And it now appears Frasier's brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) will not be a part of it.

Kelsey Grammer Reveals Why David Hyde Pierce Said No to Returning as Niles

There is a lot of peril in recreating this series, as far as tarnishing its reputation is concerned. It was one of the modern era's most successful sitcoms, winning multiple Emmys and staying on NBC's Thursday night line-up for years. The people behind the Murphy Brown reboot a few seasons ago on CBS found that out the hard way.

Trying to recapture that glory will be a very difficult task, especially if the only thing in common with the old show is the lead actor. I'll be curious to hear what the critics think if this thing - seemingly forever in development - ever actually starts streaming.

Re: Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

Probably for the best that the old cast isn't included in the new show.  If the new Frasier has strong new characters and good writing, it has a chance.  But Paramount+ has only committed to 10 shows, so the cast and show do not have a lot of time to prove themselves or find an audience.

The old Frasier didn't reference Cheers that much during it's long run, and this version should do the same and not dwell on the previous program.  However this doesn't mean that Niles, Roz or Daphne couldn't make a guest appearance at some point.

Re: Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

This may be the longest gestating reboot in history! If we ever do get to see it, it's unlikely Frasier will still be doing a radio show. Which was one of the charms of the old show, including when "callers," played by celebrity guest voices, would get on the air with a problem for the shrink to solve.

One of my favourite parts of the show and now they've done a list of the best of those pseudo-dialers.

The Frasier reboot may be the longest gestating return in TV history. Still no word on when you might get to see it. In the meantime, here are:

I'm betting on a Maris sighting sooner than I am of this new reboot

I  knew about the guest caller thing. However, the claim that Kelsey Grammer had played the same character for the longest period of time at 20 years is not totally accurate. At the time, he was tied with James Arness who played Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. Since then, Richard Belzer broke the record playing John Munch for 7 seasons on Homoicide: Life on the Street and 15 more on SVU. His record was broken by Mariska Hagerty who is still playing Olivia Benson on SVU. 24 years and counting.

Re: Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs...Frasier Is Back in The Building

I was honestly beginning to think this reboot would never actually show up on TV anywhere. But now Kelsey Grammer appears to have revealed the date he expects the new version to debut. But you'll have to subscribe to Paramount+ to see it.

The timing for the second coming of Frasier may be perfect. If the writers' strike continues for any length of time, it may be one of the few new quality shows to debut in the fall.
