I was nosing around the 506Sports website. It is best known for posting the weekly NFL FOX and CBS game telecast game distribution maps every Wednesday during football season. They also have an archive section listing broadcast teams for NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL national telecasts. In the case of the NHL, it took until the 1968-69 season for viewers to watch HNIC from the 8pm puck drop. From 1952-56, telecasts began at 9:30pm. From 1957-63 the broadcast began at 9pm. From 1963-68 it was moved to 8:30pm which meant you might see the last minute of the first period.

If they showed hockey games from the beginning who'd bother going down to the Gardens to buy tickets?

Just a note of clarification, when the telecasts began at 9:30, the games started at 8:30.

Apparently that's what team owners thought.
