CBSC Ruling: The F-Word Is OK On French Radio Stations, Not On English

They say it's because the word doesn't mean the same to French speakers that it does to their Anglo counterparts. English stations can only use the word sparingly in late evening situations, but apparently the F-bombers can be launched without too many consequences en francais. Tabernac!

‘Sometimes’ OK to play songs containing f-word on French radio: broadcast council

Full decision here.

The CBSC rulings are only guidelines, English stations can play music with the F word all they want.  Most  choose not to since it would offend too many listeners and ultimately would hurt them with advertisers and ratings.  The CRTC normally doesn't get involved with swearing on radio, and prefers that stations and the CBSC handle it.

This is also probably why Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard was able to say "merde" on Star Trek in the 1980s without the FCC coming down on Paramount's head.
