Do You Leave TV Or Radio On For Your Pets?

The question comes from Mike Richards (no, not the one on air here) a morning man in Bridgewater, N.S., who wonders if pet owners actually leave some medium playing for their dogs or cats when they leave the house

It seems like your typical talk show fodder. But in my case, the answer is a definitive yes - I always leave the sound of a human voice on when I have to say goodbye to my precious pooch for any length of time. I generally pick CFRB, because I know it will always be talk.

As for DogTV, which Richards briefly mentions in his short piece, I've actually seen this thing and even watched it for a few minutes. It has to be one of the most bizarre ideas ever conceived, especially since I'm not convinced a dog can ever properly see an image on your TV. The "programs," such as they are, consist of a host of categories, including Stimulation, Relaxation and Exposure, which is not a porn channel, but rather one filled with odd sounds.

I have no idea who subscribes to this thing, but someone does - it's been around for a number of years, so it must be making money.

My dog hates it when I go out. He's developed a strategy over the years - if he sees me putting on a coat, getting a mask or otherwise getting ready to leave, he rushes to the door and lies down in front of it, trying to make it impossible for me to go. It never works, but what a smart pooch he is!

As for leaving CFRB on when I'm gone, I have no idea if he likes the shows he hears, but I will say this - in all the years I've been doing it, I've never once come home and found that he's changed the channel!

When we had our dog, she was afraid of thunder and fireworks. When either of them was a threat, we would leave a radio on to mask the sound.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

A few books after the rollout of personal people meters a similar question was raised in Edmonton.  One of the stations performed exceptionally well exceeding its morning and afternoon drive during evenings.  It was surmised that someone strapped a PPM on a dog's collar and left a radio on.  The low number of PPMs in the market suggested the scenario was feasible.

Yes, but the real question is what was the demo of the dogs? Advertisers like puppies and younger pooches, because they aren't set in their food likes yet. So leaving the radio on for an older dog may not appeal to those paying the freight! 😁

I have an old iPhone 5 that has no SIM card, just Wifi connection to the internet. I have the Radio Garden app on it, select CFMZ - Classical FM, then leave it by the doorway where I know she lays waiting for me to come home.

Yes, I leave the kitchen radio on.   Although I love the job Troy is doing with boom 97-3, I love the gold but also enjoy some current and recurrent hits too so usually leave on 98.1 CHFI.

My mother - bless her heart - used to leave the kitchen radio on (CFRB) thinking that it might scare off the burglars. The theory was they'd hear the radio - think someone was home - and leave. We had very timid burglars in our area. Added benefit: our dog could hear the House of Warren when mom was out.

We have friends whose dogs stop and watch when Dog TV is on but ignore the TV otherwise.

My mom would do that as well. It was usually the John Micheal Show on CKTB.

Yes - Classical 96.3 for my Charlie Menace.   But, I also realized he is somehow a Justin Bieber fan.
