300 Cdn. Radio Stns. To Run 12-Hr. "Day Of Reconciliation" Programming

If you turn on the radio next Wednesday, Sept. 30th, you won't be able to avoid hearing it - a 6 AM-6 PM series of specials devoted to the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. Juno Award winning singer William Prince will host the day long event, which will see vignettes air on over 300 Canadian radio stations, including those in Toronto, Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Kingston, Ottawa and Windsor.

Among the local stations signed up: CFRB, CKFM, CFTR, CHFI, CFIQ, and CHUM-FM. The full nationwide station list, which you can see here, will give you an idea of just how widespread this is.

It's the 6th year in a row for the radio special that has been growing every year.

A Day To Listen 2026 brings radio stations together for sixth year

Will be a long day in my delivery truck. This one doesn't have a CD player. FM only and not much to choose from in the North. I don't have enough gigs on my cell plan to run my phone all day on bluetooth. No offense to any Indigenous person reading this.

Most stations will be regular programming if it's similar to last year.  They will highlight short vignettes throughout the day of indigenous stories and interviews.  It gives some stations that have little content during the day and no announcer something other than just music and commercials.

Nope.  Enough with the guilt trips.  It's an industry.

Given the situation in a certain "white" house in the U.S. This will have some resonance this year.

No offence to my native friends, past and present.  Dead and alive. I'm glad people care.

The Bigcanoe family has been part of my life since I was a pup and since my Dad, a WW2 vet, was a kid.

Where's whiteoaks and evanov in all of this?
Is cktb not airing the special?
Because, some of us want a break from this woke and not at all educational special.
I thoght this importent day was also about education about first nations culture.
If the radio stations want to air a special, they should air short language lessons, stories about first nations heros, and a showcase of modern day first nations culture and first nations cultures from accross canada.

I don't think this is a "special" as we know it. If it's the same as last year, it's two or three minute short vignettes about Indigenous issues and history, used almost like a commerical break.

They'll do this for 12 hours to mark the event and then it stops. But it's not like any station in the country can afford to give up an entire day's worth of programming to air one continuous special.

This whining from some members in this thread is tiring.

I still think this is a good idea as we really shouldn’t forget this dark history. Having said that, if it isn’t your thing, simply don’t tune in. Mind you, it is hard to avoid as tons of stations participate, just look at the list RadioActive linked in his first comment!

I tune out when the talk stations air the long special.
We are reminded all year, this day should also be about education.
The longer program on talk radio should be both stories from servivers and first nations education with partnerships with first nations stations across Canada.

Well, you can be empithetic, by actualy learning about there culture and not just there sad heartbreaking stories.
If you never learn and if were never toght, were doing the thing the brittish did, aracing there culture.
Why is'nt the short segments teaching us about how the first nations cook and traditional resipies when we know more about cooking from other cultures, why arn't these segments teaching about different languages, why arn't the segments on talk radio about the life in the different northern communities and the different communities in canada and first nations off reserv?

I have a counterplan for myself to escape this woke madness.
I will listen to CKRZ, NCI, Wawate, and watch APTN.
To bad Toronto does'nt have itsown first nations station for some real counterprogramming about the good of first nations communities.

As I'm sure you know, they tried that twice here and no one listened to either of them. That hasn't stopped the CRTC, though, from accepting new applications for yet another station here on the exact same frequency. There's no reason to think whoever wins the licence will find things any different, especially give the current state of radio, but maybe the third time will be the charm.

Re: 300 Cdn. Radio Stns. To Run 12-Hr. "Day Of Reconciliation" Programming

Toronto has tried twice on 106.5 and both efforts have failed.
CKRZ at Six Nations has a good variety of programs.
CKTB has Karl Dockstader, who has two personas:   The serious side on One Dish One Mic,  and the light side on the Sunday morning 600 to 900am show.

Walpole Island has CFRZ, but it is off and on.
I have heard the First Nations station in Georgina,  and in Manitoba and Western and Northern Canada there is a good variety of Native stations.

And they may be available online, so SBR99 can listen if he really wants to.
