Frequent Radio Guest Throws Hat In Political Ring - With A Twist

You all know the name John Tory. And you may be familiar with his son, a pilot, named John Tory Jr. He sounds exactly like his dad on the air, where he's a frequent panelist on CFRB.

But you may not be hearing from him for a while. On Thursday morning, he announced his intention to run in a federal byelection in Beaches-East York. But here's the twist - although his father was once the Conservative leader in Ontario, the son is entering politics as a Liberal. (That should make for some pretty interesting conversation around the kitchen table.)

Generally, once a person declares an intention to run for office, they're no longer allowed on air as guest, unless they're being interviewed as a candidate. So you may not be hearing from him for a while, and he could turn up on AM640 for an interview during the race as well,

Strange business when broadcasting meets politics.

Tory Sr has struck me as somewhat of a red tory, so politics may not be that far off from the right side of the Liberal party (think Carney).

No kidding he sounds just like his dad! I turned on my radio yesterday and it was John Tory Jr. announcing his running for the Beaches I think, but I actually thought it was his Dad on air and was a bit confused, since dad more or less recently said he was done with politics!

He should have little trouble getting elected. Except for 1988 and 2011 when the NDP were successful, this riding has always been solid Liberal Red.
