Indeed the end of an era but maybe not such a bad idea. As far as sports viewership, hockey does not rank highly with younger viewers, which now are more into basketball and soccer, as hockey is considered elite and too costly for many. Still, the CBC will have to really work at getting viewers on Saturday nights and I doubt they’ll get the numbers they once did.
Footnote, it will be interesting to see if when the CBC airs PWHL games, that they maintain the HNIC title, may as well….!

The shock and resentment of losing Saturday night hockey won't be as great as it would have been 12 years ago. Bill Brioux thinks many sports fans are use to paying for events they want to see or subscribing to streaming outlets and or cable. They may not like it, but the push back won't be as great as 12 or 13 years ago...Hockey Night in Canada to end after 74 years — or is it? – brioux.tv

I can only imagine the howls of protest if the Super Bowl ever went off free OTA television, even for those who watch it on cable or satellite in the U.S. There is something about having to pay for something you got free for decades that would rub most people the wrong way.
In fact, there's already action down south about the way the League is operating with politicians accusing the NFL of illegally placing games behind paywalls, depriving viewers of seeing their favourite players for free or forcing them to subscribe to endless multiple packages just to follow their teams.
Congress Probes NFL's Antitrust Exemption Over Fees
That hasn't happened here, with Rogers basically buying itself a monopoly that is great for the company - but not necessarily all that good for the viewing public.
The NFL is a whole different matter. They bring more in rights fees than the NBA/NHL/MLB combined and they have the ratings to back it up. If there is money to be made, the NFL will do what it wants.

Coronation Street fans and The National fans will be pleased.
Even though the NHL Playoffs are done, Corrie still runs at 2pm instead of its regular 7pm slot. Anyone know why?

It's a shame that after 73 years on CBC Television and 90 years on CBC Radio or Television, Rogers didnt allow (CBC didn't request) any special goodbye tribute during the Stanley Cup Finals.

With the small amount of homes with an antenna and the dwindling number of transmitters... sure, maybe don't send the feed to the headend, but give the dying man a last cigarette. Nostalgia.

CBC made the point of saying they retain the name "Hockey Night in Canada". So what are they going to do with it? License it to TSN or Sportsnet? Air minor hockey games under the banner? Use it for a game show, sitcom, drama, or reality show?

You make that up? Soccer viewership is non-existent in this country outside of the cups. Basketball's audience skews younger, but there are far fewer young people watching compared to hockey

Maybe I missed but I wonder if CBC retains the rights to the Hockey Night in Canada name and so now the name will disappear?
According to the CBC, the Corp. owns the name which - unless they somehow decide to revive it - is going to disappear from the Canadian media landscape.
"CBC still holds the Hockey Night in Canada trademark and could incorporate the brand into future coverage."
Hopefully Ron MacLean will disappear also.

As we already know, Sportsnet is not free:

No torontostan, I did not make this up, thank you. It was part of a discussion I listened to on-air recently. The point being that young people don’t watch hockey on tv like they once did, they’re not interested in it as many of them cannot afford to play it, whereas sports like basketball and soccer are popular and affordable, as they’re practically free to play, no $400 hockey sticks etc. I didn’t say soccer/basketball viewership was up, just that young people are not that interested in watching hockey. Thank you.
