Was it the thunderstorm or something else? As of this posting (Tuesday night at 8:25 PM) there is no carrier at all on AM640. Not sure how long it's been that way, but the station is off the air, something that rarely happens with them. Rare DX opportunity, but I'm not hearing anything but noise on the frequency.

As expected, the online stream is still there. Been off air for at least an hour, maybe longer.

Common visitors might include Black Information Network (most likely Illinois, Georgia also carries that but heard much less often), WOI Iowa (NPR), CBN (Newfoundland CBC Radio One), WHLO Akron, and others. A good time to check, aside from obviously now, is starting at 6 am until perhaps a half hour or hour after sunrise. Stations like Relevant radio in New Jersey (Catholic) go to full power and thus the DXing landscape changes. If a forecast aurora happens overnight, might even pull in a Cuban - many are still on the air there despite power outrages. I started this danged hobby nearly 50 years ago after hearing KFI in L.A. Good luck getting that these days!

I also got KFI once a very long time ago, long before there was a 640 in Toronto. Among my favourite catches of all time, along with KCBS San Francisco, in the days when CBL signed off of 740 at 1 AM.
Unfortunately (or fortunately from Corus' point of view) the station was back by midnight.
No word on what caused the hours-long outage.

When 640 was a vacant frequency here, wasn't there a Cuban station operating there? I could never receive KFI until after 2am. It was never a strong signal. I was never able to hear anything strong enough to ID on 740. I once had KNBR San Francisco in 1977 when CFTR was silent for transmitter maintenance.

640 used to be a clear channel years ago. At night the only channels present were KFI LA and a Cuban station. Back then I used to get KFI several times a year here in WNY.

There is am AM station at 640 in Atlanta. I used to listen to Phil Hendrie on that one in the mid 90's in a semi cab once I got out of the GTA. Talk 640 WGST Listen Live - Atlanta, United States | Online Radio Box

Speaking of Corus Entertainment, another firing - this time the axe fell on Michael Downey, who used to produce John Oakley's show and more recently the Brad Smith show.

WBIN Atlanta is now Black Information Network, and more or less same as the BIN's WMFN in Peotone Illinois. But the BIN networks breaks often for local references. Illinois is much more common for me north of Toronto.
