Before he worked at WPHD in Buffalo, the late Harv Moore was a well known disc jockey at WPGC-AM in Washington, D.C. In 1972, a records promotion guy brought in a test pressing of an album that hadn't been released yet by a new group no one had ever heard of. 
 
Their first single stiffed, and so when the A&R guy visited Moore, he urged him to listen to one particular track he thought might be a hit. Moore liked what he heard, put it on the air, and the phones lit up. People wanted to hear it again and again. 
 
That group was The Looking Glass and the song was "Brandy."
 
"Moore began playing “Brandy” in heavy rotation as listeners began to request it, and the song became a hit on DC radio with no copies sold. [Group member Eric] Lurie recalled the record company telling the band that if “Brandy” was released as a single, it would do well because “if you have a song in a major market like this and the requests are like that, it’s going to be a hit.”
 
Once it became huge there, it was suddenly everywhere. And that led to one of my favourite admissions of all time.
 
"The song was so overplayed that summer that Lurie admitted the band sometimes “wound up changing the station when it came on, because we were sick of it at that time.”
 
But none it would have happened without future Buffalo DJ Harv Moore. 
 
And that's the only reason you ever heard the Looking Glass' biggest hit, "Brandy."

(While the group's members call themselves one hit wonders, that's technically not true. A song called "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne" got played on many stations as the follow-up. It peaked at #33 on Billboard in 1973, while making it to #21 in Canada.)
