After much furore when the cancellation of "The Late Show" was announced last July, we know now when that final episode will air. And it's expected it will draw a lot of eyeballs. May 21st, a Thursday, is the date the Stephen Colbert-hosted staple will end for good.
Colbert confirmed the date on Tuesday night's show.
Stephen Colbert Reveals Date Of Final ‘Late Show’ Episode
There's no word on what, if anything will replace it or if CBS will even continue to program late night. And we don't yet know what Global is planning to put in the timeslot once the show ends.

I wonder what Bronstein is up to? And the Dial-A-Date girls?
🤔
Then again, as part of Corus, they might sign off at night as an economy measure.

They did have a very relaxing "we end our broadcast day" message for very many years.

Yes and it was so long, by the time they finished listing where all their transmitters were, it was almost time to sign back on!

I read somewhere months ago that many CBS stations were planning to replace Colbert with Byron Allen's Comic Unleashed. But this wasn't happening until September. Guess they would be running Colbert repeats over the summer. It sounded like CBS had no plans for a new network program to replace Late Show.

How is Comics Unleashed doing in the 12:30 ratings?
Of course, the joke here is the only way a US network will let a Black man host a late-night show is if he pays them. (Comics Unleashed is a time buy).

And now we know what Stephen Colbert will be doing after his final show airs in May. It's the last thing you might expect.

Had no idea about this, but this won't be his first screenplay He wrote another one, apparently partially inspired by Degrassi High.

I watched Carson's last show. Highly unlikely I will do the same with Colbert. Doubtful I will change my mind when its Kimmel and Fallon's turn.

Has now been reported that Comics Unleashed replaces Colbert in late May right after the last Colbert episode.

Variety has more on the deal, which begins after Colbert signs off for good on May 21st.
"Allen has paid CBS to run two episodes of “Comics Unleashed” — usually a new episode paired with a library half-hour — at 12:37 a.m. ET in recent years. First, he took the slot during a 2023-to-2024 gap after “The Late Late Show With James Corden” ended and before “After Midnight” launched in January 2024. He once again took the slot in September 2025 as “After Midnight” ended its run."
“I created and launched ‘Comics Unleashed’ 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love – make people laugh,” said Allen."

If we still have network late night talk shows in ten years (if there are still networks) they will probably look more like Tom Snyder's Tomorrow/Late Late Show than today's Tonight Show - no band, no (or a modest) audience, no fancy sets, no expensive stunts or set pieces, no writers, no fancy production values, no host with a $30 million contract, and just one or two guests for the hour

Hansa, with this format you left out “no viewers”!

That's a podcast. And they get viewers/listeners, so you're probably right.

I loved Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show along with Later With Bob Costas. Both did. or had done by their staff, extensive deep research on their guests. Often guests would remark My you did do your homework on me.

My all time favourite Tom Snyder interview came on this show, when he went to a California prison to interview infamous killer Charles Manson for an hour. It was one of the most bizarre and frankly, frightening back-and-forths I've ever seen.
Snyder kept stopping the interview to try and get Charlie on track, as he repeatedly went off into La La Land. Some of Snyder's questions were equally amazing. "Don't you think you belong in the Nut Ward?" he asked him at one point.
I remember getting very lucky to see this. For some reason, WGR-TV (its call letters back then) didn't show it. But fortunately, WICU-TV, Channel 12 from Erie, was coming in that night and I watched it on there. Little did anyone suspect the coming of YouTube decades later, and it's been put up on the site for anyone to see. It's gobsmacking stuff and shows you just how crazy he was.

Drex mentioned during his guest talk show stint on AM640 Tuesday that he contacted Global about what they're going to replace Colbert wth in Canada. He was told that at present, they're not prepared to make any announcements. However they can't wait long. We're talking only a little more than a month before they have to put something on in that time slot.

Will Colbert go out with a whimper or bang at CBS & Trump? One of his former producers thinks the comedian will take the high road in his May 21st farewell episode.
