Toronto Santa Parade

Well that was disappointing,  basically a 1 hour show filled with ads. No bands at all. Still, they were only given 1 hour when they needed 2 hours or more. I don't know what Rogers negotiated with the parade so maybe City tv was there last option.

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

I thought the City TV coverage was a really bad joke this year.
They should have covered everything properly, bands and all.
They also should have saved the whole "interview the kids" thing for a 30 minute show before the parade or something so that there could be more time for REAL parade coverage, bands and all.

CTV was slightly better.  Global did it best.  You actually saw the parade, floats, bands, clowns and all.

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

It was full of technical snafus. Anyone who touched that should be on the naughty list.

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

I believe Global was the best with a 4pm air time, but all they did was air the parade.

If the traditional tv stations don't want to air the full parade then they should move on to the new media, people with there own YouTube channel as an example or influencers. Offer let's say 10 of them who have a proven large following an opportunity to air the parade on there channel, but they need to show the whole parade live.

Anything would be better then what I saw today. How can you have a Christmas parade with no Christmas music. Who over at Rogers thought this was a good idea.

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

Retrontario has been livestreaming classic Toronto Santa Claus Parades all day, from the 1920s right up to come of the classic Global broadcasts of the 1980s, also the CBS coverage of 1984 with host Scott Baio!

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

It’s times like this when I wonder why Rogers is in broadcasting. The Citytv of old, (pre-Rogers), would have done an amazing job with the Santa Claus Parade, their live event coverage was top notch, New Years Eve comes to mind. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rogers wanted this event just so the competition didn’t get it. Terrible effort Citytv. I also imagine that many of the Parade’s sponsors won’t be happy either seeing as their floats weren’t on-air! Stick to subpar newscasts and leave parades to the pros.

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

Overall a poor and sloppy effort from City tv.  Too rushed, no bands, showed video of the same little girl in the crowd about 10 times, and when one of their main sponsors float went by the graphic said- Sponsored by Volkswagn Canada.  Nice attention to detail guys. And speaking of graphics, some of the "fun facts" about the parade were repeated over and over and others appeared once.  Agree Global did the best job a few years back on the parade.  Hope that the Santa Clause Parade organizers and committee really reads the riot act to Rogers and City.

They probably think they've found the sweet spot in terms of keeping costs as low as possible and maximizing profits. They're in the money making business. In terms of what should be done in this instance, paterson1 nails it: "Hope that the Santa Clause Parade organizers and committee really reads the riot act to Rogers and City."
I do wonder what the financial arrangements are...

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

I remember the days of Rogers Cable 10.  The channel was produced by mainly volunteers.  Yesterday's Citytv effort made Cable 10 at its worst, look good.   Why bother - other than create a long form informercial for Rogers' advertisers,   I "fast forwarded" to see if there was anything of value in the broadcast and was disappointed at the amateurish telecast.

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

The world's first and largest Santa Clause Parade certainly deserved better and more professional television coverage. Timothy Eaton has likely been spinning in his grave since yesterday's broadcast...

Re: Toronto Santa Parade

I remember the days of the Eatons Santa Claus Parade when they used to go along Dupont.    I also remember both CBC & CTV covering the parade at different places.   How things have changed.

Back then, I believe the parade was organized at Dupont and Dovercourt. When I was a kid, the family would drive in from Oakville and park at my grandparents home on Ossington just south of Davenport and walk down to Dupont to watch the parade. It was held on Saturdays then.
