Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

Almost 3 AM, and the thing finally finished exactly the way I feared it would. I wonder how many here stuck with Game 3's epic insanity to the bitter - and I do mean bitter - end.

Actually, during this marathon, I was thinking of the broadcast teams involved - the play-by-play guys, the camera people, the directors and crew, who had to stay and stay and stay until it finished. It reminds me of a close federal election I once worked at a TV newsroom, that heavily depended on the votes from the West Coast to determine who won. We didn't wrap up until 3 AM, and I suspect by that time, no one was watching.

I heard the sports guy on 680 going live at 3:15 AM, noting he'd been there since 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon and couldn't leave until it was finished. (Most of the time, their overnight sports reports are pre-recorded.)

I have to give kudos to Blair & Barker on The Fan, who did their post-game show as scheduled, even though it was after 3 AM. I really wasn't sure they'd do it.

For broadcasters, it was a day - and a long night - to remember. But the fact the Jays didn't win makes you want to forget it altogether!

And one last thing - though they'll be fully updated online, I'm guessing all the major print editions of Toronto's newspapers will be without the biggest story of the day, because their print deadline is well since past.

Read all about it? You probably won't if you pick up a copy on Tuesday.

Do they still put out "Extras" anymore?

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

As I have to get up at 5.30 am for work, I went to bed at  my usual weekday time of 9.30 pm, it was 2-0 LA at that point. I checked the score at 1.30 am , saw it was in the 14 th at 5-5. I figured it wouldn't end with a Jay's victory being the Dodgers had last bat  home field advantage. Valiant effort on the Jay's at least.

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

Looks like CFRB morning newsman Stuart McGinn was smart to take the World Series week off. He told John Moore last Monday he didn't want to come in tired after staying up late to watch the games, so he booked the week off.

Ironically, if he was getting up early to report for the early shift on Tuesday, he could have turned on the TV and Game 3 would still have been on!

Yes I watched until the bitter disappointing end. I don't start work today until noon.

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

I have to wonder - is there some kind of curfew law in L.A. that at one point would have suspended the game until they could pick it up the next day? I seem to recall it happening before in baseball, although never during the World Series. It was already close to midnight in California when this tragedy finally came to an end.

How long could it have possibly gone on before the rules say, "Game over - for now" and picked the thing up the following afternoon before the next game at night?

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

I almost turned it off after that miserable excuse for a 'Canadian national anthem'.  Snivelling caterwauling.

I watched it all.  Great television.  TSN1200 in Ottawa, switched to the game following the Sens rout of Boston.  For many, including myself, this is reality TV.

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

I like to stick to a routine, and my bedtime is 10:30p, so I watched 'til then and set the PVR to record the rest of the game, plus an additional two hours in case of extra innings.

Of course I didn't think it would be a whole extra game 😬, so the recording ran out as I was watching this morning. Fortunately I was able to see the ending on Blue Jays in 30.

I'm very disappointed, but as mic'em already mentioned, it was a valiant effort by the guys.

Even it up tonight boys!

We hung in til the loss...and were wondering if they cut the budget for anthem singers ?  The guy was dressed for yardwork, and sang worse than bad karaoke, while Paisely got the money shot and the anthem production. You have to wonder about the not so subtle dig at Canada by the people in charge of the show.

To repeat what I wrote in another thread:

In the 18th inning:
"I didn't know the review centre would be open at this hour...bet'cha they ordered in pizza!"
The Sportsnet announcers have a great sense of humour.

Stuck it out until the 14th inning and turned in to bed at 2am. I had a bad feeling that the Jays weren't going to win (Ohtani was just killing us and I figured he'd hit a homer eventually and that would be that).

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

How they'll play another 9 innings (and hopefully not more) less than 24 hours later will be interesting to watch. There are no fresh arms, which means outside of the starters, no one out of the bullpen will be able to go on for long.

By the way, how does the extra innings thing work with the sponsors? They certainly didn't pay for 18 innings, but after every 1/2 frame they still had words from the sponsors. Do they have to pay extra for the additional spot airings? Or is it just part of the agreement - you get a message every 1/2 inning, no matter how many there are. There's certainly no way they could have predicted or paid for what happened on Monday night.

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

I'm in town for the OAB/CCBE conference, and yeah, I stayed up for the whole thing.

Lots of people dragging today!

(And we Rochesterians are all Jays fans now - Ernie Clement grew up in my suburb!)

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

Interesting to watch the "There's Good News Tonight" kicker on NBC Nightly New Tuesday. It was all about Monday's history making 18-inning World Series marathon, and was, of course, celebrating the Dodgers win.

While they certainly showed the highlights of what happened, along with L.A. fans whooping it up, there was something missing.

I don't believe reporter Morgan Chesky even mentioned the words "Blue Jays" anywhere in the entire segment. It was as if the Dodgers had beaten some faceless team who weren't worthy of naming. I'm not saying they should have celebrated Toronto's squad, who after all did lose but held their own for 18 excruciating innings, but it was pretty poor journalism not to at least refer to who else was on the field.

Looks like I wasn't the only one wondering about those working behind-the-scenes who endured a virtual late night doubleheader without a break between games.

From the Globe & Mail:

"[Sportsnet Producer-Director Troy] Clara had asked a camera operator to get a shot of the next batter.

“I saw the camera whip over and I knew where the guy was standing, it might have been Ohtani on deck, and he’s a pretty large fellow and he’s standing right there. And I could see as the camera is panning back and forth and up and down, and he’s looking all over, I could see he can’t find them.

And he told me afterwards, his eyes had just gone bleary and everything was one mushy colour and he couldn’t tell one from another.”

Re: Did Anyone Else Stick Through This To The Bitter End?

Folks at 1050 CHUM must be either sleeping from exhaustion or catching the game on 590. CHUM is running an open carrier with a bad hum. Still, squeaking through are XEG Monterrey Mexico, WLYQ Parkersburg WV, presumed WTKA Ann Arbor with Detroit St Louis hockey (no apparent Blues affiliate on 1050), and one of two Relevant radio (Catholic) stations in Wisconsin. I'm at my Kawarthas DX Post.
