AM640 is just one of the stations cashing in on the “true crime” craze, with the announcement it will be airing a new Corus network show bookending the weekend.
Crime Time is set to air in Toronto from 9-11 PM Fridays and in the same time slot on Sundays. The show is hosted by Mike Browne and is described as “two full hours of uninterrupted True Crime from some of Canada’s most notorious cases.” Browne is the author of several books on some notorious cases and is bringing the podcast to radio.
It will also air on Corus stations across the country, including CFPL London, from 9-11 on Sundays. The other stations out west will run it on Saturday nights. I’ve heard it will be “uninterrupted” but I can’t confirm it will be commercial free until it actually airs.
The full list of who’s airing it when can be found here.

Back in the 80s CBC Radio aired "The Scales of Justice" with Eddie Greenspan featuring hour-long true crime reenactment.

Might just run old time radio crime dramas. Dick Powell as Richard Diamond was a very enjoyable half hour. 😁

CHML used to run old radio shows on overnights so there should be an archive somewhere. I'd consider them to be the forerunner of the podcast.
On topic: So now Corus has two true crime properties: "Crime Beat" and "Crime Time", which feels like a doubling of resources.
I know the genre is still popular but I feel it is waning overall, until Mindhunter returns to Netflix.

They were very much the 'go to' station. In later years I have enjoyed RadioEchoes.com
which conveniently segregates into categories. No desire to listen to classic soap operas, mostly crime, mystery, and comedy.

I'm sure few remember that CHIN-AM, of all stations, did old time radio overnights when they were still on 1540. That stopped when they started going daytime only.

In the 70s one Vancouver station used to air CBS Mystery Theatre on Sunday nights, narrated by E.G. Marshall.
I used to listen frequently.
His signoff used to be "Until next time...pleasant dreams???" spoken ironically with a question mark at the end.

I would listen to that on WBEN. One person I deeply miss is Max Haines who had a crime flashback column in the Sunday Sun. He had such an eloquent way of describing dark, devious deeds and murders most foul.

The Scales of Justice with Eddie Greenspan was on CBC-TV.....not radio.
Since CBC Radio is no longer producing radio drama, I wish they would bring back their excellent drama series from
the 1980s such as Nightfall and Vanishing Point. They could also carry the outstanding BBC horror series Fear On Four. Nothing like an audio thriller on a cold dark night.

The TV series was later, in the 90s. The original series aired on the 80s on CBC Radio. Some of the episodes can be found online.

640 used to have a one hour show on Saturdays featuring a crime story related to Canada. This was a few years back now. It had a female host and was always a well done broadcast. If I recall correctly, it aired at 5 pm. I worked Saturdays and always looked forward to it as well as Roy Green at 2 pm.

My former landlord would get the Sunday Sun and I would read the Max Haines column over a cup of tea, that lead me to picking up one of his books, which are still out there if you’re interested! We also would do the Pub Quiz, another Sunday Sun feature. Haven’t look at that newspaper in years mind you.

misleading subject line I thought they'd hired Ferraby and given him a national show.

Lol, what a take. My initial reaction was Corus is adapting Crime Beat for radio. My initial reaction does not make the headline misleading. Who or what is "Ferraby"?
