Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Per CTV Noon News July 31st:

Trump has written a letter to the various CEOs of pharma companies demanding that they lower prices for drugs in the US, wanting favored nation pricing. If they don't commit to lowering prices, he will use tariffs and other means to punish them. Healthcare stocks tumbled on the news.

He wants these companies to increase drug prices in OTHER countries (including Canada) and use that revenue to lower prices for Americans

This could lead to Canadians going south to the US to buy their drugs instead of the other way around right now where Americans are buying their drugs from Canada since drugs are much cheaper here.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

El Presidente was talking to the press yesterday about the great discounts that US consumers will be getting.  He said not 40% or 50% less on drug prices.  No, he claimed that prices for drugs would come down 1200%, 1300%, even 1500%.  Since prices can't be discounted more than 100% (free) I guess he plans that the drug companies will be paying consumers to use their products.  He mentioned these discounts various times, and nobody in the press scrum questioned him on his math.  Sad...

No wonder he has failed with his business efforts. Seriously, a 1500% price cut? What a toolbox who thinks he should have the Nobel Prize for economics. I seriously hope that big pharma stands up to him, there’s a lot of people on meds in the US, so pharma holds the cards here.

Completely ridiculous and pathetic on the part of the press but I wouldn't expect any decent math out of today's journalists. They already love to use phrases like "four times less" in reports. You can't multiply something and end up with less, that isn't how math works. These people could add two and two and end up with five.

OTOH, how do you seriously grill a guy whose natural responses to real and direct questions are: "What a nasty question" or " "What outlet are you from?" and then proceeds to berate the person asking?

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Also another news story that came out this past week but which really didn't get the attention it deserved:

Donald Trump fired Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), on August 1, 2025, shortly after the release of a monthly jobs report that showed lower-than-expected job growth for July and significant downward revisions for May and June. Trump publicly accused McEntarfer, a Biden appointee, of manipulating or "rigging" the jobs figures for political reasons, claiming they made him and the Republican Party look bad. He stated on social media that the jobs report was "rigged" and directed his team to fire McEntarfer immediately, insisting that "important numbers like this must be fair and accurate" and "can't be manipulated for political purposes".

White House officials defended the move by saying the administration wanted a "fresh set of eyes" at the Bureau and stressed concerns about unusually large revisions to recent jobs reports. However, economic experts and former BLS officials widely criticized the firing, pointing out that data revisions are a routine and well-documented part of employment statistics, not evidence of political bias or manipulation. Critics warned that Trump's action risks undermining trust in the independence and integrity of official government data.

In short, the economic numbers made Trump's presidential term so far look awful and contradicted his ongoing claims that everything is fine, prices are going down(!) for everyday items like gas and eggs, America is "hot" again, etc. so he fired her.  We can all safely assume that her replacement will be a loyalist that will report numbers that only make Trump's economic sabotage appear successful (how else is he going to get that Nobel Prize for Economics?)

Experts are right: revisions are a common thing, here's why:
https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/bls-data-explainer-what-to-know-rcna222570
[Jobs data revisions are common. Here's how the process works.]

As someone online put it, "Trump fired his labor statistics boss hours after the release of his latest weak jobs report - which means these are the last real stats you will see for his presidency."

A very dangerous move because government policy relies on good data to decide where to allocate money. Pretending "everything is fine" while the house is burning down doesn't stop the house from burning down. Come August 7th, Trump's tariffs on foreign goods being sold in the US will take effect, and companies have already said that they will have no choice to pass on those price increases to the consumer.  Result: inflation.

This may offer one reason why the US stock markets and gold and crypto have been surging upwards since April: inflation means you lose purchasing power, $1 no longer buys what $1  used to buy only 6 months ago. People, especially the ultra-rich, don't want to see that purchasing power diminish, so they rush to invest it in assets that will go up alongside inflation (gold is the most traditional hedge, but stocks can also do the same thing - the Venezuela stock market is way overpriced but the people put their money into it because it keeps going up in step with inflation in the country, which keeps their life savings from losing their purchasing strength).

Still, the stock markets are mostly for the rich not the everyday joe. 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, more than 1 in 3 Americans have zero retirement savings, these folks can't afford to put anything into stocks. Even if one had the money to invest, it's questionable if it's not already too late anyway, US stocks went up by 30% in just a few months this year. Historically, a steep run up usually comes with a correction of about 8% and after that, investors will no longer get reliable US economic statistics because Trump will have installed a loyalist to report only good jobs data...

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Climate change is happening, it's backed up by science. What does a climate change denying president do? Make it impossible to collect any more evidence:

https://x.com/MilesTaylorUSA/status/1952835869003665523@MilesTaylorUSA

REPORT: White House orders NASA to destroy satellite used for monitoring climate change, according to NPR The censorship campaign goes to space.

I guess if you can’t SEE the climate changing, then it ISN’T changing. The stupidity is exquisite.

From Grok AI:
"the OCO-2 and OCO-3 satellites primarily measure atmospheric CO2 for climate monitoring but also track plant growth. This data aids farmers in crop yield forecasting and drought monitoring, supports national security by predicting migration from crop failures, and assists oil/gas industries in emissions tracking. Sources: NPR, NASA reviews.

The OCO program's annual cost is ~$15M, or about 0.06% of NASA's $25.4B FY2025 budget—negligible, yet the data's value for agriculture, security, and emissions tracking is immense. Cutting it seems shortsighted. Sources: NASA budget docs."

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Just announced... this idiot is trying to destroy the US economy, I'm pretty convinced of it.

Trump Announces 100% Tariff on Semiconductor Imports

President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on all semiconductor imports into the United States on August 6, 2025. The policy includes exemptions for companies committing to build manufacturing facilities domestically, aiming to boost U.S. production amid national security and economic concerns. This measure targets foreign-made chips essential for various industries, encouraging firms like Apple to invest in American operations.

I believe this will also raise the cost of the Apple iPhone for Canadians as well.

UPDATE: from https://x.com/Stocktwits/status/1953212054405284321

Trump confirms nVidia and Apple won’t face the 100% chip tariff—citing their commitment to expanding manufacturing in the U.S

One has to wonder if this is yet another attempt to tempoarily sink the stock market just as he did a few months ago so his rich friends (who likely were already told to sell their tech stocks yesterday), can buy in again at a low, before Trump then rescinds the tax and the stock markets shoot back up in relief.

If it goes ahead, it would hit the auto sector pretty hard, since modern cars obviously use a lot of semiconductor chips.

Trump wants a 100% tariff on all semiconductors entering the U.S. But the U.S. only makes 12% of its own chips. We’d be taxing the 88% we depend on for phones, cars, AI, even defense.

Dean Cain, former Superman actor from the Lois and Clark TV show, joining ICE to round up brown people. Well, he didn't have much of an acting career anyway so sure, go join Trump's brown shirts.

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/aug/07/former-superman-actor-dean-cain-reveals-hes-becoming-an-ice-agent-to-support-trumps-mass-deportation-agenda

Former Superman actor Dean Cain reveals he’s becoming an Ice agent to support Trump’s mass deportation agendaThe actor will be sworn in ‘ASAP’ amid the federal agency’s recruitment drive and unprecedented immigration raids that have sparked protest across the US

peaking on Fox News on Wednesday night, Cain told host Jesse Watters that he decided to join Ice after sharing one of their recruitment videos on his Instagram account on Tuesday, which Watters had spoken about on his show.“I’m actually a sworn deputy sheriff and a reserve police officer – I wasn’t part of Ice, but once I put that out there and you put a little blurb on your show, it went crazy,” Cain told Watters on Wednesday. “So now I’ve spoken with some officials over at Ice, and I will be sworn in as an Ice agent, ASAP.”Asked what inspired him to join, Cain said: “This country was built on patriots stepping up, whether it was popular or not, and doing the right thing. I truly believe this is the right thing.”

Cain recently made headlines for calling the latest Superman film “woke”, after director James Gunn described the character as an immigrant. Cain told TMZ: “How woke is Hollywood going to make this character? How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times?“We know Superman is an immigrant – he’s a freaking alien … The ‘American way’ is immigrant friendly, tremendously immigrant friendly,” he added. “But there are rules … There have to be limits, because we can’t have everybody in the United States. We can’t have everybody, society will fail. So there have to be limits.”
