Aren’t you the same idiot who trolls the Buffalo boards with incorrect information all the time. I think you mentioned one time that WECK would get no ratings, yet I’ve turned it into a top 8 metro station, beating 50,000 watt FMs in Buffalo.

First off, this is not Talk 1270. It is WUSW 1270 The Patriot “Buffalos Conservative Talk”. There is a huge difference from “Monday morning quarterbacks” like you, and people who actually know how to create and run winning radio stations, like me.

WBEN is already in reaction mode to The Patriot. Let’s talk a year from now and see how wrong you were, again.

He never said you were Talk 1270.  He was comparing you to the previous format.

Thanks for the branding lesson by the way.  It's really cute how you spelled "Buffalo's" (as in possessive) without the bloody comma.  And throwing around the term "idiot", there's real class right there!

Thank you for the backup. And the previous format was the same as the current one. All it did was rearrange the deck chairs. So, I guess that makes me an idiot for stating the PAINFULLY obvious.

And they say WE'RE the sensitive ones. PSSHH! Please.

And just one more thing: Let's look at the last 3 books in Buffalo radio trends for what was Talk 1270, shall we?

March '25: .5
April '25: .5
May '25: .4

Not exactly setting the Buffalo radio market on fire, is it?

Insofar as WECK: Yes, it's well-done and I have it on my presets. The music fits me in my age demo. That said, how can we trust your take on it being a top 8 station when you don't bother to subscribe to Nielsen? Is that going to change for The Patriot?

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

Why would anyone in the GTA or most of Southern Ontario care what either of these two stations are doing??

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

It's the SOWNY Board, where the "WNY" stands for Western New York. Hence, the frequent mention of Buffalo and environs. You can, of course, choose not to read a thread if it doesn't interest you.

As for why anyone would care, I would also point out that this thread has attracted over 1,300 page views - so someone is interested!

It's not that I am not interested, the quibbling with Buddy Shula was interesting. That alone likely increased the page views quite a bit.  Just seems like a lot of space and focus for two stations that virtually nobody on this side of the border listens to, or in many cases can't even tune in, in the case of 1270.  WBEN alters their line up...(yawn). they have a line up??

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

All radio stations have some kind of show line-up, but you know that. If people weren't interested in the thread they wouldn't click on it. (Unless they did, how would they have known about Shula's comments in the first place?)

We'll continue to give space to changes in Buffalo radio, although it's never going to be the priority here that Toronto and Southern Ontario are.

Read it if you're interested. If not, you can skip it. Others will be curious. These posts are for them.

Your points are well taken.  But it does seem odd that many times you seem to make a bigger deal about a lot of Buffalo radio news than Buffalo Radio Discussions.  Their board can go for a week with no new posts or comments.

There was a time I would have said the same thing about talk radio on AM ... period.  There was an overabundance on the subject here.  However, more music radio subjects have been brought to light, current CanCon regs have been discussed, and more discussion on AI affecting music and radio has surfaced.  I would still say that discussion about ANYTHING related to Western New York has yet to reach 30% of this forum.  Radio Discussions has devoted a major thread to this subject, so I don't really see RA over-blowing the topic.  There are indeed American readers on the forum and they will sample the station.  The forum readership isn't all on this side of the border.

I think though (and you can correct me), that this comes from some sort of life long distaste of radio in Western New York you may have.  Often when RA (or even I) pine for the 70s and 80s Buffalo radio on this forum, you seem to downplay that.  As you've cited in the past, American radio didn't have that affect on you.  Today, I'd agree, but between 1978 and 1987, I'd say 30% of my time was spent listening to stations with names starting with a "dubya".  And between 1983 and 1986, I'll bet that number rose to between 60% to 70%, depending on the year, especially when it came to 80s R&B music.  Buffalo radio really had a lot going on in terms of content and polish back then.

Cheers,

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

I think we were really lucky to be geographically positioned to hear radio from across the border. We had our way of doing things and they had theirs. And while WKBW never came in very well here, WGR-AM put in a strong signal to Toronto and still does. And while I know some here have mentioned that it didn't appeal to them, they won the Billboard Magazine Radio Station of the Year Award multiple times, so they must have been doing something right.

Although admittedly, I grew to hate "Shane, Brother Shane" (aka Max Gibson) after a while, when he became increasingly obnoxious. But all the others on that station were amazing talents. And while we couldn't hear them well, the KB guys like Joey Reynolds, Danny Neaverth, the great Don Berns and let's not forget, Jay Nelson were all legends.

We also had the benefit of some great Hamilton stations, and CKOC was the last of the big AM Top 40 outlets in the area.

All in all, I'd say we were really lucky to have had so much choice of some terrific talents both here and across the border. And thst doesn't even include the wonderful FMs, like WYSL, WGRQ and who can forget WBEN-FM's superpowered Rock 102.

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

My favorite Buffalo stations were the prog rockers. WYSL, WPHD, WBUF, WZIR and WUWU plus WCMF from Rochester. Fantastic loved them all. The early prog CHUM FM is still the best station that I have heard in this area and the early CFNY was also great but from 1971 to 1984 the US stations were a great alternative and button change option.

During my top 40 period I did sometimes listen to WKBW. Also in the late 70's with only AM in the car I would tune into WGR as the oldies on the station were preferable to the AM top 40 at the time. CHUM AM did have somewhat a revival for me when they began to feature acts like XTC and even the Ramones. In the late 80's and 90's I liked listening to WHTT Oldies 104.

Nowadays it's not necessarily signal strength that's the problem with  97 Rock or Classic hits 104, it's the content and same goes for all of the local rock and pop stations in Toronto. Indie 88.1 has potential and I would listen if they went fully triple A like WXRT in Chicago.

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

I guess I couldn't understand why anything Buffalo was given such a high profile on here by about 4 or 5 individuals. I must admit it isn't as prevalent as about six or seven years ago.  I don't think I have a distaste for radio from WNY simply because I never listened to much of it.  I am sure some of it was fantastic and good for them.  However when I did tune in, I am sorry I found the stations kind of ordinary and a few not that great.  Maybe I was listening to the wrong ones ?

So as I said in the previous post, it does seem odd that we make a bigger deal about a lot of Buffalo radio stories than the Buffalo Radio Discussions.  I get that it is a big deal in Buffalo the selling of 1270 and Buddy Shula spending the money and taking the time to try and make it successful, and keeping the AM dial viable. And rightly so, this particular story has been popular and much read on Buffalo Radio Discussions.

But let's be honest, likely 95% or more of the SOWNY registered users on this side of the border had never heard of WUSU 1270 radio and had never listened to one second of the station over the past five years. So it just seems odd to me why this has been given so much of the spotlight.  And WBEN has a new host.  Does anyone know the other hosts or listen to that station?

Maybe since it is AM radio and talk moves the story to the front of the line.

"And WBEN has a new host.  Does anyone know the other hosts or listen to that station?"

Well, I find Tom Bauerle interesting at times, especially when he comments on the effects of his lactose intolerance.  Otherwise, when the Toronto talkers get stuck in a rut on a particular news story, that's usually when I go to WBEN.  Also, WBEN's signal is strong enough in the GTA that most car radios (non-electric) will find it using the seek function.

I'm the opposite; I will NOT listen to WBEN unless it's necessary. If I want news, I'll go to 680 NewsRadio or the CBC-maybe even WBFO(even in its weakened state)than I will WBEN.

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

WBEN's MAGAGruppe is a rather swarthy crowd. Bauerle seems thankful that management has been walking him on a short leash for his own safety - the State Police Shadow People are formidable even with Cumo currently deposed. War Hero Boy has been largely left to himself, though he sounds like he's been generously self-medicating from what I've heard recently (he was the primary booster to the current SoD don'cha'know).

The New Guy sounds like he is defensively proud of his high-school debate record.

What talent does the competition have to offer? Dozens wait breathlessly.

Re: 1270 AM Now Officially "The Patriot" Doing Conservative Talk

So having read all the comments here, I tuned into 1270 yesterday early afternoon. Reception was great and that’s about it. The show I listened to was hosted by “Clay & Buck”, which basically amounted to two frat boys gushing over their new bully. It was entertaining, even unintentionally funny at times, but I could only take about ten minutes worth. I do encourage people to check it out though, just for a laugh even.

What interests me most as an outside observer is how nasty the MAGA-ites are. Their tone is always hostile, superior and really, really mean. I don't quite get it. Why are they such sore winners? The woman who does their press conferences at the White House, Karoline Leavitt, is incredibly unpleasant. Every response is practically spit out in hostility.

They may be in for a rude awakening if they continue - with an accent on the "rude."

Great point RadioActive. I think that rudeness, nastiness and general lack of class was normalized by their president. I think it has changed the way civilized people now view that country. Too bad, not too long ago I held the US in high esteem, hopefully I will again one day. Until then, I’ll vacation/spend elsewhere!

I wonder if WBEN AM has Kathy 'Clown Shoes' Weppner's phone number on the rolodex, just in case one of their starting lineup goes down? 🤔🙄
