WECK Not Long For 1270 AM, As Format Flip Confirmed

Damn, just when I could finally receive it over the air in Toronto, comes this news:

1270 AM Niagara Falls To Be Relaunched As Conservative Talk Station "The Patriot"

Start date is July 4th.

So, basically, swapping out one set of conservative talkers for ANOTHER set of conservative talkers.

Granted, Buddy Shula got this station on the cheap so he IS going to make money on this(i.e it won't surprise me if companies that advertise on WECK will also be able to run ads on The Patriot). IMO, the ratings are going to be pretty much the same.

Sounds like he's going after WBEN's core audience with that line up. Newsmax and Fox News consistently pull decent TV ratings so I think he will attract listeners on both sides of the border. WBEN still has a leg up though with their bigger and louder signal.

RA: You didn't mention if you were planning to remove 1270 from your car radio presets? ;-)

Worse yet, I set it in three radios! So yes, they'll be removed, although I have no idea what I'm going to replace it with.

Just curious. What are all your car presets? Since you don't seem to listen to a great deal of music, I imagine all your FM's are set to whatever was picked after leaving the assembly line. I still have one button set for 102.5 from their Rock102 days. Never got around to changing it.

How old is your car?

I guess I should have been clearer. It stayed on 102.5 through their top 40 days and A/C days as well. I stopped listening when they went A/C. My current automobile is a 2006 Camry. It was my dad's vehicle. Only has 112K km on it. Should last me a few more years. I like it because it has an AM/FM radio rather than an "Entertainment System"

Somehow I can't bring myself to remove 900 AM CHML from one of the presets.  That heritage station deserved better.

As a remembrance of my late wife, I keep one of the presets on FM2 set to WDCX FM; her strong faith helped her endure both lasting effects of a car accident and a 20 year walk with cancer before her passing in 2005.  This car was obtained many years after her passing.  I rarely listen to the station (especially with the fascists occupying the noon hour); it's just there as a tribute to her.

And despite my advanced years, WBNY FM 91.3 always has a place on my radio.

My new car is one of those screen based systems and I absolutely hate it. There are no pre-sets, but you can only add (or in the case of WUSW, take out) favourites and put them in whatever order you want.

But getting to them isn't half the fun, since you have to use this idiotic joystick-like oval to pick the station you want.

In my old car, I knew exactly what was on the pre-sets, and could tune in any station without having to even look at the dial. Not with this thing. It's incredibly complicated and therefore almost useless. It does have HD, which I use for CFRB, 640, 680 and the Fan. But for the most part, it's a dangerous and really stupid design.

I'm sorry I bought the thing, but it's hard to judge stuff like that from a test drive.

Wow! That sounds like an absolute nightmare. If I had to purchase a new automobile, it would be another Camry and I would probably have to deal with a hopefully better designed entertainment system. I suppose there is a way to hook up your phone to the car speakers if you wanted to listen to music. But that means using data which costs money. I will stick my simple but free system for now.

Re: WECK Not Long For 1270 AM, As Format Flip Confirmed

Buddy Shula reveals why he thinks his new format will be beat longtime market leader WBEN-AM.

“Listeners will finally have a choice of talk stations. Most people ‘perceive’ WBEN as being conservative, but it's only perception. If you truly listen to the show topics and opinions, it's not conservative at all. Enter The Patriot.

“WBEN has long been straying from the conservative lane."

I will miss the WECK simulcast, but I knew it was too good to last.

Buddy Shula's new station seeks to pry away conservative listeners from WBEN

My phone connects to my car via BlueTooth and I've ripped all my CDs onto my PC. Provided your phone has a slot for an SD Card (mine uses micro), simply drag and drop the files onto said SD Card, pop it into the phone and using whichever music player app, you'll have non-data-consuming music at the ready.

The city itself is to some extent, but the surrounding suburbs and rural areas, including those of the Niagara and Haldimand areas in Ontario are much more right-leaning. Niagara County, New York which includes the cities of Niagara Falls (NY), North Tonawanda and Lockport went to the GOP in the past three U.S federal elections.

To your last sentence: I also have WBNY as one of my presets. To me, it's a bit more personal: I'm a Buffalo State grad AND an alum of the station(having worked there from 1988-1992, and doing some of the alumni weekends there as well).
