The carbon tax comes off at 12:01am tomorrow April 1st. We should see a litre of gas come down by about .20 cents a litre. So if you were thinking of getting some gas, wait until tomorrow!

Won't be difficult to wait for those in the Kawarthas. Gas stations in Fenelon Falls and surrounding areas were reporting 1km lineups for gas, and apparently are now running out or have run out of gas. More than an inch of freezing rain has toppled trees and powerlines. One biggie in front of our place (where I DX) took out a power line and landed on the propane tank serving the generator. Basement's flooded, to boot (no generator to power the sump pump). One of two AM antennas is toppled by large branches or something. I'll see it all tomorrow when I go up to check things out. Anyhow, I'll be filling up well before getting up there...

Which means I'll fill up tomorrow night when it's cheaper in the Gormley area.

And that's the question. How often does "...and the savings get passed along to customers" actually happen? This is the second time the carbon tax or carbon pricing has been removed in Ontario and the way it's been handled and the media coverage have been kind of opposite.
Remember when Doug Ford was first elected and he removed the Kathleen Wynne cap-and-trade pricing and made it abundantly clear that these savings were not to be pocketed by the fuel industry as extra profit and was meant to benefit consumers or else? He was pretty firm about it and it was pretty widely reported at the time. Granted, there was no federal election campaign going on at the same time plus all the other headline leading news, but this time around there doesn't seem to have been much of a lay down the law about the savings being intended for customers out of Mark Carney, or if there was, it wasn't carried much in the media and I missed it.

Not to be a party pooper, but gas guru Dan McTeague has previously warned that this is almost the time of year where we switch from winter to summer gas - with the latter being more expensive. So while there may be a slight price break for now, he warns it probably won't last long.
Although according to tomorrow's prediction, the savings on Tuesday should be considerable.

The carbon tax price drop has been talked about a lot so I doubt if many operators would stay with the higher prices tomorrow. RA is right the change over to spring gas is coming soon and prices will go up a bit for a while like it does every spring but this is not permanent and will come down again. Price of gas is never stable, and it's still worth looking out for price wars. We get them quite a bit in Kitchener/Waterloo.

Except the fuel companies would prefer a conservative government, so if they can neuter Carney's carbon tax elimination by making consumers skeptical that he actually did it, they will.

I guess, but that sounds pretty risky for both the companies and the tories. Could backfire on them, and neither will want that. Guess we will know by this time tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your basement flooding Saul. I had that happen in our home last summer , after only being here for 4 months. I had to spend 40k on repairs, which included tearing up the ground around the foundation and having all new rebar into the blocks, blueskin waterproofing and new drainage system. I am still facing landscaping costs when the snow finally is gone. Part of it on my neighbors side of the property line. Regarding the carbon tax, I have read it will take an act of parliament to actually remove it. Maybe the price drop today is voluntary on the part of the fuel companies ?

Traditinally, I have always found the cheapest gas in the GTA is 1. Dixie/Shawson in Mississauga [one block north of the 401] and 2. Yonge just north of Steeles in Thornhill. The Canadian Tire station on Dixie was 141.9 yesterday. The Shell station near me [Avenue/Wilson] was 156.9.

Whatever happened to radio stations doing FREE GAS Fridays? Or, at the very least, matching the price of gas to their frequency as a big promotion of some sort??

So far in my area the lowest I have seen is 1.34.9/litre at various stations (Circle K and Petro-Canada/Canadian Tire). Yesterday gas was about 1.43.9 for the best price, but most around 1.48.9 or a few cents higher.

Thanks, Mic'em. I think it'll max at just 2-3 inches, and I hope to have the generator back running in a day or two, which should avoid any significant damage. I'm just about to drive up to see what's up. Neighbours say the area literally is like a war zone...

I heard a woman who called into Ontario Today on CBC Radio 1 on Monday who was 40 minutes north of Peterborough. She had a Generac that had run out of propane, no cell service to call the provider for her tank, and when she tried to drive out to find a working phone, her road was completely blocked by fallen trees. My thought at the time was, how was she calling into the show, but then she explained she had walked a few kilometers to get signal. Round two starting later today according to the forecast. On a brighter note, gas was $121.9 here in Chelmsford yesterday. 123.9 in Sudbury.

I find the Gas Buddy extremely useful and pretty accurate. The most expensive gas in North America isn't in Canada. Nope. That distinction belongs to a station in the California desert about 40 miles west of the Arizona border in a hamlet called Fenner. The only gas station in town charges a whopping $8.09/gallon which works out to $11.59 Cdn. Granted our gallon is 20% larger. Still that's pretty pricy. However, would you want to drive through the California desert not knowing where the next fillup is and running out of fuel? Of course smart drivers would buy their gas on the Arizona side of the border at around $3/gal.

Gas can be had in Waterloo at Shell for 1.24 per litre this morning. Lowest price in Ontario is in Wooler ON with .89 cents per litre. Wooler is north of Quinte West and the 401. I filled up yesterday for 1.30 at Canadian Tire/ Petro Canada.

At the other end of the spectrum 2.10 per litre in Moosonee according to Gas Buddy.

Wooler, I spent many summer Saturday nights on Wooler Road in my teens watching the drags. There was a straight stretch of road between two hills, that had no homes at that time. Perfect drag racing scenario. Usually there would be about 6 good runs before the headlight flashing signal from a car on the hilltop indicated traffic, or more specifically , the police were coming and everyone would disperse .

Just to close this subject for now, Dan McTeague was on 640 Thursday morning, warning the switch to summer blend gas will be coming around April 15th, and predicted a fill-up will increase by at least 7 cents a litre or more by then. So act accordingly now before it's too late!
