Some listeners have not been overly kind to the new duo hosting mornings on My Broadcasting's WOW-FM. The station, WLYK in nearby Cape Vincent, N.Y., is one of the few American stations that broadcasts mainly to Canadians in Kingston.

So when owner Jon Pole acquired the married couple's syndicated show, which broadcasts remotely from Iowa, to do the new AM drive shift, some people - still angry over U.S. tariffs and Donald Trump - objected. (The former morning hosts have been moved to My's country formatted station in the market.)

The main complaint seems to be more than they're not local and people who like the station are upset that they're based so far away and not in touch with area issues.

Owner Jon Pole tells the Whig-Standard that being the only Canadian who owns a U.S. radio station does pose a unique challenge, but he insists the move was well thought out, was agreed to before tariffs became an issue and the criticism may be a bit over the top.

“I don’t know where to draw the line as Canadians. I get we’re mad at the Americans. I’m not any different than anyone else. However, at the same time do we stop playing all American artists? I also brought it up to someone, that you’re complaining to me on Facebook, which is an American company. So why are you still using Facebook if we’re only doing Canadian things?”

He noted shows like Casey Kasem and Ryan Seacrest's American Top 40 have been on in Kingston for years with no complaints.

"There’s lots of programming that exists on Canadian radio that is hosted by an Americans. It goes the other way too. It’s the normal entertainment industry. Newscasters who have gone to the states to become very successful. Sportscasters, movie stars, musicians. There’s that free flow back and forth.”

[color=#191919]have to say I don't get what the big deal is here. It IS a U.S. station and I would expect U.S. hosts would

LOL.  Not a burner account.

You can read what our team has been saying for years here:

We're not perfect by any means, but we do our best.

I guess you make more in Toronto than in Renfrew - but then you have to live in Toronto.  I'm pretty sure most of our staff would take a pass on that deal.

We never asked for a name for myFM?  If you read the survey it's about music, news, etc.,

We had imaging on all the stations explaining that we had to change the names because of trademarks.

We did ask people on the street and phones what they thought we should call CFLY-FM.   If you know Kingston, everyone calls it FLY-FM... so it wasn't a leap, or surprise... more of a no brainer.

Also... yes....we had a year to figure things out in advance

Iheart didn't really expose anything... it just got more people talking... which was... good.  No complaints here.

Thanks for the heads up the stream... many bugs with many changes.  I know at one time the stream wasn't being fed the mics.. so the silence was likely jocks on the air.     Switching 4 stations in a day / automation / and disconnecting from the Bell mothership is a big process... but fun and as one of PDs noted... we're lucky to get to do this!

I don't understand something.... you asked the public for input on the naming of the Brockville stations, yet it has already been named MyFM? Care to elaborate?

The short answer is the research was already done.   The current survey is to invite the audience to be part of the process - and also confirm everything is still on track.    The problem was the iheart switched our stuff way faster than we expected which was fine... but it let the "cat out the bag"

That all the average listener likely isn't that tuned into these "radio" things.   They just know whether they like it or don't.   Based on the responses - they like it, and all the things we've planned will be very popular.

For the record - I agree with Radio Aaron about the frequency.   99 is not an actual frequency.  98.9 is. Why confuse it?   Lower the friction as much as possible for people to find you, remember you and to listen to you.  Of course, you don't have to... just my 2 cents.

I will jump on in on this.

Toronto Stan - no idea who you are, or your experience. Hope you're well.

Here's what I can tell you.   In my 30 years of radio (and I've done ok) - playing the National Anthem at noon is one of the BEST decisions we've ever made.   The audience reaction has been nothing but positive since we started years ago.   Obviously today's political environment has increased the positive response, but it has always existed since we started.  In rated and non-rated markets.   Pembroke has been doing it through surveys the longest and 104.9 myFM is #1 in every day part 25-54... so it's not hurting us.

Also - You're wayyyyyyyy overthinking it. It's 90 seconds before the news.  If I'm being honest - if a listener doesn't like us taking 90 seconds to pay tribute to our country... I'm not sure I want them as a listener?  We've had exactly ZERO complaints.  This board is the only place I've seen anything negative about playing our Anthem.

Now you know.

P.S - if asked I would recommend every station in the country add it immediately.  I would encourage Canadian artists to send custom versions that stations can play for variety.  There is no down side.

P.S.S - I posted this 6 days ago.

I know My Broadcasting's Jon Pole occasionally visits here and answers questions, which is generous of him.

I noticed on the CRTC website a note indicating that one of the items on the Commission's agenda this coming week is giving "effective control" of CFJR-FM and CJPT-FM Brockville, as well as CFLY-FM and CKLC-FM Kingston to your company.

Congrats in advance to the new additions to the family.

Since most of us will never be in this position, I have a few questions:

-How long after the CRTC makes this official does it take for a radio company to actually take over the place? I can see why you might not be able to go in the next day and completely start afresh, but in the case of Neeti Ray, his approval for the takeover of CKWW Windsor and CKOC and CHAM in Hamilton happened quickly, but his actual changing of the stations to what they are now took months. Is there some rule that keeps the takeover from happening sooner? Or could you walk in there the day after the approval and begin running things your way?

-Generically speaking, how long does it take to put a new format in place, if that's in the plans? Is there a run-through and meetings with the employees to outline what's happening or do you just do it gradually? I remember the stunting with 102.7 near Kingston (the brilliant "The Pole.") Do you believe in memorable relaunches or do you just pick a date and one morning, the new roster takes effect?

I'm really curious about how this process goes and how long it takes. Obviously, for competitive reasons, I don't expect you to reveal anything to the other stations, but if you can answer some of these questions generically, I think many here would be interested as to how it works when a new owner comes to town.

Good luck with your new acquisitions!

Thank you for the kind words.

1.  Once the CRTC approval happens, it's really up to the two parties to decide on a mut

John, I know your on this forum, If rogers gives up CJCL or CHFI could you by it?
Why did rogers even by CKOT, they were doing a great job on a great undersurved format.
Even young people like me like the soft AC/easy listening format.

I would love to own CHFI. (We don't own any AM stations - but I love sports radio - but would say no to CJCL).   I'm not sure I would have enough in the piggy bank if CHFI was available.   It is an amazing station with an incredible history.

If I'm being honest, our strength is in medium and small markets. We know that business very well and enjoy working in those size of communities.  I don't see a day where we run stations in major markets.   That said - it would be fun!

In 20 years of asking our audience why they listen.  The answers are always as follows no matter the market or format.

1. Local news
2. The music.
3. Contests and promotions.
4. Announcers

We staff accordingly.  If the audience said polka at #1 - we would have polka.

I can only speak for MBC.

We don't have a single station in the red.

Many of our stations just finished a record year including our first/oldest market.  Last fiscal we hit our 10 year target - 3 years early and having gone through the pandemic.   I do not share RadioAaron's opinion from my point of view.

I don't stick my nose in other operators businesses, but my observation would be, the independent operators that I admire have lots of sales people, and generally 3-5X or more the performance of their competitors who are doing whatever it is they do.

My final thought is radio enjoyed pretty hefty margins for many years.  Since we started in 2004 - we've always done really well.  Our margins are not the good old days of radio (we never experienced it anyway) BUT - they are usually better than most businesses in our size of markets.  You just have to work hard no different than our customers work hard in their categories.

Radio ran (what I would call) properly is still a very good business.

In 20 years - will people still want local news in their community.  Yes.

In 20 years - will people still want to attend cool events in their community.  Yes

In 20 years - will people still want to support charity events in their community - Yes.

In 20 Years - will businesses still need help with marketing, ideas, community connection.  Yes.

That's what we do.  It's possible our towers may be replaced by streams, or our digital news sites... that's fine - we earn our living by helping others succeed via our platforms.   So our runway is long as long as we deliver.

My 2 cents.   Now we can all patiently wait for RadioAaron to tell me I'm wrong ;)

I will answer this.  We have approx. 140 staff.  Small stations have small staff and large stations have large staff.   So for example, Exeter (pop. 4500) has 4 right now.  Niagara (pop 300,000) has close to 20.

In regards to Tillsonburg - I would expect the staff # will increase from what it is today, but will likely be less than the 28 when Rogers purchased it years ago.

So in answer to your question - how much more local will they be?   A shizzzz ton wizzzz.

Also - your posted info is incorrect.  Look at a map.  Look at our stations.  Yes the ones in close proximity help each other.  Yes, someone from 300km could help our from time to time or for a special circumstance.  What separates us from the "big boys" is our content and our community involvement.

RadioAaron -

The stunt was more or less to clear out the old audience.  The reality was the transmitter site was a mess and needed more attention than originally expected...so the stunt went on a little longer than we intended and people loved it.  We didn't see that coming to be honest. Part 2 of that story is that other things including the Bell deal came along which altered our original plans and lead to us putting 102.7 into a bit of holding pattern.  So... we never implemented our original plans as the game changed.  Which made the process interesting. It's a great "over a beer story"

As for Big G and Matty... I have yet to meet someone IN Kingston who doesn't love them AND highly anticipate their return.  They're great community guys and I'm willing to bet on them.

Will it work?  No idea. We're just out here doing it in real life, not on a message board   If it doesn't work... we have a country station coming that may suit them better.  Who knows?  Stay tuned.

The CRTC were sure to mention the fact that My Broadcasting Corp. already owns a station in Gananoque, CJGM-FM 99.9, which shares tower space with CJPT-FM 103.7 near Lansdowne. Which station will MBC give up in order to stay within ownership limits? CFLY-FM 98.3 and CJPT have massive signals, while CKLC-FM 98.9 and CFJR-FM 104.9 are smaller, originating from their respective ex-AM sites. CJGM is also a smaller signal.

Also worth noting is that the incorrect address is given for MBC - earlier this year the company HQ moved to new studio and office space at the expanded recreation complex in Renfrew, the "myFM Centre". The address given is in the process of becoming a restaurant.

Fun fact:

It's the right address as Canada Post hasn't identified a proper address for our new office.   I know that sounds crazy.

I can give you some context.

While we're waiting for CRTC approval for CFLY and CKLC we are experimenting a bit with 102.7. It's fun to hear some of these tracks on the radio.

We have one important upgrade at the tower that will be completed in the next few weeks.

At that point... all the stuff from the whiteboard will be put into action.

Can't wait!

If you want to play along...

What would your programming brain put on:

98.3
98.9
102.7

I think we've considered every possible combo on the planet - but maybe you can surprise us?

I'm not sure your point is?   Radio stations across the planet use VTs.  Some VT the news and the announcers are live.  It this case we do the reverse. Not because I like it.  Not because you don't like it.  We do it because the audience prioritizes news first.  The minute they tell me something else - I will do that.   It's really that simple.  My friend you are over thinking it.

BTW - We're not trying to fix anything - nothing in our company is broken.  Our staff have secure jobs.  We're serving our communities.   We're having fun.   We're growing.

We already have Noon casts in every market so, not likely anything "more". (You have made me think we may need to promote them more now)  We have been investing more in our newsrooms in the last 6 months.  We've been adding some journalists that got caught up in the metroland shut down.   We made this decision because of the quality of the people.  Frankly, it is adding an expense we didn't plan for - but we strongly believe it is an investment in our product.    There are times when you have you take a chance or go with your gut.   This is an example.  So far it has been excellent and we're happy with the results.
