CFCO Chatham was the station where I started in radio as an operator.

After being there for only 3 months the station was sold to a man named Hildebrand. The day he took over everyone was terminated except for the morning person. That was Frank Proctor. David Crichton who had been hired only a few months before myself was also fired.

The new Program Director was a guy named Sandy Hoyt.

Yes, I've had that dream a lot, although not for many years. My version was I was in the station alone on a night shift and nothing worked - not the mic, not the computers, not the back-up turntables, not the carts (both of which they had in those days), nothing.

All I could hear was the hum of dead air and no way to fill it.

Oddly, I never had a dream about TV, although I spent more years in that medium than in radio.

Dream?   :-)

This is a fun thread.

The one thing no one has mentioned are the call letters. Since the 102.1 frequency was close to the Buffalo station the Allen Brothers decided on the call sign.

CFNY - they said with a smile. The letters N and Y together often refer to New York.:-)

In the same way the letters in NYthespirit.com refer to CFNY. :-) We have never hidden that.

For those who may not have listened - my shows are very much like The Spirit Of Radio. Here's last Friday list of what I played.....

Thanks everyone for the kind words. So very much appreciated.

BTW - a record promo guy heard my show at CHLO. He then told Mr. Kirby about it. That's how it all started. The promo man's name is Walt Grealis. In the beginning he would drive me to the station each evening, as I was new to Toronto. In the car with him was a guy named Stan Klees. Stan would shout to me ad-lib notes that could use on the show, if I wished. Crazy!

Regarding my leaving CKEY after such a short ride - I had signed a deal with CBC to co-host a new full network show called Music Hop. The co-host was Alex Trebeck. The Producer was Stan Jacobson.  CKEY had a deal with another Production House and it seems my contract with CKEY indicated I couldn't work with an opposing TV production group.  IE - CBC. BTW - it was not CTV.

I was advised I had to make a decision - CKEY or CBC-TV. I was a kid and TV and television seemed like a step in the right direction.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Hop

And yes - I added CHIQ to my radio work. At the same time CHCH had a Saturday evening show called Mickie A Go Go. But my memory is a little thin....

Thanks again. Means a lot..

When CFNY-FM began broadcasting from the CN Tower, we held the Push Button Breakfast with listeners winning tickets to the event. The Mayor of Toronto pushed the Button...a plane circled the tower hauling a Welcome CFNY sign and away we went.

Each of the 200 listener guests left the CN Tower following the breakfast with one of these radios....

I am a big big fan of Dick Biondi. Listened every nite when I was a teenager. Who knows? He may have had some influence on that Dave Mickie guy. Many years later we, along with a couple other DJs, were put into the R & R Hall of Fame together. Meaning - I got to spend almost a week with him in Cleveland. It was so wonderful. Can you imagine?

One night, that week - Joey Reynolds invited both Dick and I to join him for his all night show on WOR-FM New York. Joey was doing his show from the broadcast studios located in the very top tip of the pyramid of Rock Hall. Damn it was great. Imagine sitting next to Dick Biondi in front of a mic with Joey doing his thing.

Thanks mic'em for remembering.

Marsden, I know you won't remember me, but I worked at CKMW the year before and into the change into the ethnic period. I was the morning jock, then was followed by Maie Potts at 10am. I did evenings for the first 6 months in 1985 and have great memories of conversations with Ron Bruchel. What a fantastic experience it was for me. It was my last radio gig, when I was let go , I never did get another broadcasting job. Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Live Earl Jive and Beverly, and all the other so talented people who walked that hallway at 83 Kennedy Road was the best  time of my life, other than my children being born , and marrying my wife. I wish you great health David and happiness.

Hi mic'em - I really don't know all of the real names of folks posting here. However, it is great to hear from you and I'm delighted to hear your story. 83 Kennedy Road was quite a lot of fun. It was also a gathering of very professional people such as those you have named. Happy you got a taste of what I believe radio is really about.

Fun. Creative. Professional. Caring. Plus a few other adjectives.

It's not appropriate for me to pass judgement on others, but there are still some over the air radio stations in our country doing good stuff.

Again thanks for remembering those moments mic'em. I'm sure you found something great to put your life into. Love is at the top of that list, so good for you and the family.

That's what it's all about.  d

BTW - Earl Jive, Ivar Hamilton, All Nite Andre, and a few others are doing weekly shows at NYthespirit.com. We are celebrating our 10th year together.

Joey Reynolds - has been recognized by Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. About 20 years back several of us got the same honour. At the time Joey was doing all night shows at WOR New York.

On one of the evenings we were in Cleveland Dick Biondi and myself were invited to sit in on the Joey Reynolds Show. Joey's other guest that night was Les Paul.

That week Joey's show was done from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Studio - which BTW was situated in the highest point of the pyramid.

When I was a teenager Dick Biondi was my favorite DJ. Big influence. Some have said Mickie was a copy. With that in mind you can imagine what a total thrill that all night show with these two giants was. d

Mr. Carson's two Head Writers for the last decade or so were from Toronto....and yes they had a band in the 80's in Toronto when they were just kids.

I don't have permission to give their names. Both are wonderful folks and one has returned to Toronto with family.
