The first record I ever bought was "For You Blue" by The Beatles, at my local Sam's when I was 10 years old. Of course, it was the flip side of "The Long and Winding Road", but that wasn't of much significance to me ... I had heard, and was continuing to hear, the A side more than enough on the radio, whereas that wasn't the case with "For You Blue".

Completely agree. I just wanted to quickly post my thoughts on this, in case this was worth a try rather than us losing all of Doug's old posts. One of the things I really appreciate about Boardhost is how many years of archived posts they will retain ... even though I'm using the free version for the oldies board, I've yet to run into any limit on this.

Also, after changing the name of the spare account, I just found that I was able to reuse the original name for a new account. So RA, if you were to rename Doug's current account, that might allow him to set up a new account as Doug Thompson.

That possibility crossed my mind, but as someone who occasionally likes to look up something that was said in the past I would personally prefer that it wouldn't come to this (for instance, a while back I was looking at old threads relating to the Roger Ashby Oldies Show, and saw a post from you that was interesting to see again). I'm actually wondering if RA could rename your current one before you set up a new one -- I tried doing that with a spare admin account I have on the oldies board and I was able to do this, whereas that isn't an option I have for my own account here.

This situation got me thinking about a regular on the former oldies board named Flo Murdock. She was a music industry veteran with strong opinions regarding music and musicians that she liked and didn't like, and she got into disagreements with a number of people including me. In my case, it reached a point that for quite some time, I figured that she didn't like me. But when Ron Smith, the admin of the previous board, announced that he was shutting it (along with the site that hosted it) down, and some of the regulars said that they were going to miss it, Flo said something to the effect of "Wouldn't it be great if Lorne could set up a new board for us!" I was really surprised to see her suggest me as a potential new admin, but that showed that our disagreements hadn't been personal (and also that she had a higher opinion of my admin abilities than I did!). But I'm sure that it helped that our disagreements had never been political either ... I'm very interested in politics and therefore also take an interest in the political viewpoints of musicians, but when I saw how problematic politics could be on the other board I decided that I'd avoid saying anything about my own beliefs.

I'd love to believe what you say is true. But every time politics about either PP or JT (who generally have nothing to do with broadcasting) raises its head here, the claws come out by those who support one or the other, eventually leading those behind the keyboard to start insulting each other. So to answer your question, can an intelligent discussion be had about this? The answer should be yes, but in my experience, it always seems to deteriorate to no.

I wish it were otherwise, but as someone who reads every single post here, it's never really happened. Which is why I prefer not to bring them up at all. But you're right - if people can discuss this stuff rationally without name calling if not outright hatred to those with disagree with them, it could be interesting. But in a polarized world, it just doesn't ever seem to be the case.

I agree, RA. On the former Oldies Music Bulletin Board, people would occasionally express their own political views regarding those of the musicians we discussed, and the admin would usually leave them up. But sometimes that led to responses from people who felt differently, and things could get very negative very quickly when this happened. So that's why I've wanted to just avoid anything like that on the current board.

Thanks for all your support. I have to say in all honesty banning someone is something I dread doing and it actually keeps me up at night, because I'm generally a stickler for free speech. But my Golden Rule is:

It's OK to disagree. It's not OK to be disagreeable.

It's a small thing to ask. And I'm grateful most here adhere to it and make this the great place it generally is.

As I've mentioned before, my approach on The Oldies Music Board has been to delete anything political unless it has direct relevance to what a musician is doing. I also prefer not to ban users, but one user deleted himself after he posted something political that I removed ... part of it was actually ok, but the other part completely crossed the line and so I deleted his post as soon as I saw it. I found it unfortunate that he left over the situation, but I also have absolutely no regrets about what I did. Your comment about how this place should be a fun little board is a good description of what I want the oldies board to be as well.

I recall Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits talking about "Henry" and saying he knew there were other verses, but he didn't bother to learn them, so he just sang the chorus - and not the actual song - over and over. Didn't seem to hurt sales. It was a huge hit. (I can only imagine what the British made of the statement that she refused a "Willie!")

And by the way, in case, you're curious what those missing lyrics are, they can be found here. Listening to the original version below, from 1911 no less, it's not surprising they left them out!

Herman's Hermits' version wasn't released as a single in the UK, although it was included on their debut album there. But according to Wikipedia, Harry Champion changed "Willie" to "William" in later recordings of the song that he made because of the slang meaning of "Willie".

From the liner notes of You Don't Have To Be Irish to Enjoy an Evening with the Abbey Tavern Singers on Arc:

In 1966 a solid Irish rouser WE'RE OFF TO DUBLIN IN THE GREEN featuring the Singers was released on TV as a beer advertisement. This ad, created by Carlings Breweries Ltd., increased the group's popularity many times over and, indeed, in Canada listening to the ABBEY TAVERN SINGERS fast became a national pastime. This song-come-jingle was then released on record by the Singers and became an international hit.

Other Irish artists that charted on CHUM would include The Bachelors, Them, Van Morrison, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Thin Lizzy, and The Boomtown Rats. Also, The Carlton Showband, whose cover version of "We're Off To Dublin In The Green" (retitled "The Merry Ploughboy (In The Green)") charted alongside the original on CHUM, consisted mostly of musicians from Ireland who had relocated to Canada.

Just to follow up on this, I didn't see any commercials on TSN during the fourth quarter of last night's game either.

I had never heard of Dominick either until I saw references to it on The Oldies Music Bulletin Board, the predecessor of The Oldies Music Board that I administer. And going by what's shown at 45cat.com, I think I know why. Their listings of 45s are categorized by the country where they were released, and they only show Dominick as having been released in the US and not in Canada. Monte was from New York City, and the following comment at the 45cat listing for this record might also be of interest:

Didn't chart nationally, but I swear, everyone in the NYC area my age and up knows it.......eee-awww, eee-awww, eee-awww, eee-awww!....John

Over on The Oldies Music Board, I'm only too happy if people want to extend the concept of the board, which had originally been 1950s-1970s on the previous board. Within reason, I'm just glad to see people posting, and I've posted about 1980s music myself hoping that this would help let people know that it's ok to do this. So I'm glad to see that this forum sometimes goes beyond its usual geographic area when it's relevant to te the subject at hand.

The wikipedia article on the act doesn't specifically mention 6 pm, but I think this is what The Athletic article refers to - it's in order to protect high school (and college) football attendance! (I assume it's 6 pm Fridays to midnight Saturdays - which also explains why the NFL plays on Sundays rather than Saturdays, generally).

The act withdrew antitrust immunity for any pro football telecast if a high school or college football game is being played within 75 miles (120 km) of the broadcasting station on Friday and Saturdays from the 2nd Friday in September until the 2nd Saturday in December. This provision, intended to protect high school and college football attendance, has the effect of barring national broadcasts of NFL games on those days, since virtually all of the country is within 75 miles of at least one high school game on every Friday night in September and October.

That's right, and thanks for finding that. The article I posted was coming at the situation from a different angle, but I was having trouble finding something that properly explained what I knew in general terms to be the situation -- that there is a law that effectively has meant that the NFL doesn't schedule games on Friday nights or Saturdays during most of the fall to protect college and high school football games.

Here's a previous article from The Athletic that discussed the situation.
Why College Football Playoff expansion means battle with NFL for TV time is building

From the article:
If you wonder why the NFL’s new Black Friday game will kick off at 3 p.m. instead of at night, it goes back to the Sports Broadcasting Act, which bans pro football after 6 p.m. in the fall. Still, that game will go up against college Black Friday rivalry games like Iowa-Nebraska.
“We have really come to appreciate and enjoy Black Friday,” Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said. “The NFL coming in, I can’t control that. We can’t control that. So if it happens, we’ll just have to find room for everybody.”
But the encroachment goes both ways. The Sports Broadcasting Act window ends in mid-December, which means college football will move into NFL territory with CFP expansion.

There was a time - and it was a while ago - that the CFL was on U.S. over-the-air TV. It stretches all the way back to the early 50s when NBC used to show some of the games.

Here's the TV Guide listing for the historic first CFL game ever broadcast across the border, and yes, it involved the Argos. It was August 28, 1954 (and I even managed to track down the score. Toronto won 13-6.) Is it true a touchdown back then was only worth 5 points as it says in the box trying to explain the rules to an American audience?

Thanks, RA ... very interesting to see that. Re your question, I found the following at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_football#Scoring
Touchdown
Achieved when the ball is in possession of a player in the opponent's end zone, or when the ball in the possession of a player crosses or touches the plane of the opponent's goal-line, worth 6 points (5 points until 1956).

I will accept some of your opinion, and agree that maybe a case could be made for the King's first-in-70-years thing. But you say "all the time." I'm willing to bet it's not every single day.

Yet, they've been on CFTO almost every weekday newscast (which makes me think it's one of the producers who loves this stuff) and believe me, not every appearance by these people is worth 60 secs. of precious airtime. I expect CBC to do this, but to claim CNN, Fox or any of the others has a daily Royals clip or viz is a bit too much for me to buy.

RA, I can confirm that you're right about CNN. I have it on a lot, and aside from major events like the Queen's passing and Charles' coronation, along with airing the occasional documentary on weekend evenings when they're not doing news coverage, they don't normally have stories involving what the royal family is doing. And I also agree that the occasional story involving what Harry and Meghan have to say (which I haven't even seen CNN do recently) is in a different category, particularly given that they're no longer working royals.

I've wondered about that, along with a couple of songs of hers that have gotten significant airplay in versions by other artists: "Universal Soldier" and "Until It's Time For You To Go". I wonder if she ever somehow obtained citizenship based on her claims, and if so, whether there would be any possibility of it now being revoked. This also has me wondering whether there have been any other examples over the years of songs that were accepted as qualifying as CanCon, losing that status as a result of information coming out that showed that they shouldn't have.

Quite the interesting concept album.  However, "Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat" is a bit of an outlier here ... it didn't qualify as Cancon, since only the artist was Canadian. As for "Can't Catch Me", it didn't chart on CHUM but I heard them play it a fair amount. I thought it was quite catchy and actually wished at the time that it were longer, but I agree with Rune that its length helped account for its airplay. By the time it came out, the days were long gone when CHUM could edit Canadian songs down to two minutes or less to help meet Cancon requirements, but short songs like this one helped without needing to be edited.

Peter, I had the same reaction as you. But you might be interested in my own experience with DNA testing. I have a great-grandfather who said that he was a Baron, the son of a Prince and Duke who was a Marshal of Napoleon. His obituary said that he'd originally been a Catholic priest, but then went on to become an expert lecturer on the origins and history of Freemasonry. My family originally believed all of this, but then my sister and I started doing research that raised suspicions that he wasn't who he said he was. We finally ended up doing DNA tests that confirmed some speculation about his origins that I'd found via my research, which was that he might actually have been a Jewish man who had concealed his true identity -- an identity that would have been problematic for him, because for many years he earned a living by giving lectures against Catholicism that were supposed to be based on his time as a priest (but which I found were largely based on those of a genuine ex-priest). Our DNA tests show that we are about 1/8th Jewish, and since we have no other Jewish ancestry, this must be from him.
My sister and I were very willing to accept whatever the results of the DNA testing might be ... we were just glad to find out the truth, and we have happily embraced this new aspect to our ancestry. However, some others in our family have been very unhappy with what we've found, because they very much want to believe that we are descended from nobility. Buffy Sainte-Marie is obviously even more invested in being Indigenous, and if DNA testing were to disprove this it would be very problematic for her. So my guess is that she has no desire to do it. I'll add that I have no doubt that if my great-grandfather had still been around when I did my research, he would have been extremely unhappy with it, and that this likely would have led to the same kind of issues that have occurred between Sainte-Marie and some members of her family.
