Just remembered another Canadian example. From the CanadianBands.com entry for Robbie Lane & The Disciples:

They landed a TV advertisement jingle deal to help promote Baby Ruth chocolate bars, thanks in part to the musical director of “It’s Happening” Doug Riley. The song was so catchy that Riley used a stripped down version of the band that featured Lane, Bush, Trach and Shearer to record it as a single, releasing “Baby Ruth” under the pseudonym of The Butterfingers in 1968 on Red Leaf Records. That same year Hallmark Records approached Lane to record another single on their label under the Butterfingers name, and their second single, “Look What’s New” was released.

From The Canadian Pop Music Encyclopedia:

COLEMAN WILDE
Ralph Cole / Doug Wilde
While working on radio and television jingle production in the Harris Cole Wilde company, Ralph Cole (Lighthouse) and Doug Wilde were asked to write and record a song for Australian beer company Foster’s. Ad agency copyright editor Peter Gilboy gave the duo lyrics and they proceeded to write six musical interpretations that competed against other ad agencies. The song “It Doesn’t Matter” won the ad placement. Attic Records came to them to create a a single and the duo expanded the 30 second piece to full length which attained significant airplay under the fictitious name Coleman Wilde. The single would sell nearly 30,000 copies in Canada. With notes from Doug Wilde.

Ok Lorne I will get back to that Sweet home with Alabama and Southern Man by Neil Y.

I did think of including them, but felt that they relate more directly to racial and social injustice and aren't as overtly political as Sweet Home Alabama with its mentions of the Governor and Watergate. An argument can certainly be made for both songs, though, and I thought that someone was likely to suggest them.

The reason you haven't seen as much in recent years is because there's no "incentive" to repost etc... Bell no longer does the five cents or whatever it is for each action.

Good point ... I'd forgotten about that. Still, it shows how meaningful Let's Talk is to them now, that they've almost completely stopped talking about it. And this is despite the fact that I often see them posting about other mental health initiatives that don't involve Bell, and that wouldn't involve any cents-per-post incentive either.

I was in high school from 1973-78 and listened to Rock 102 a lot, as did many of my friends ... and although market research was still in my future, it was obvious from the number of Canadian ads that they were getting a significant number of Canadian listeners. But while I liked the superior sound quality of hearing the hits on FM, I also liked the fact that they were playing songs I wasn't hearing much or at all on Toronto-area radio. An obvious reason for that is that they were playing songs that were making the US top 40 but not the top 10, and so it only made sense that some of those records wouldn't get as much or any airplay here because of the need for our stations to play 30% Cancon. But on top of that, the type of songs that were mentioned earlier didn't get as much or even any airplay on Rock 102. In particular, as someone who didn't like Donny and Marie's songs, I don't recall Rock 102 playing them at all -- I think because they were more oriented towards songs that would benefit more from the "Dolby FM" sound that they regularly mentioned in their IDs.

Just before the end of yesterday's show, Roger Ashby announced that it was his second-last show and that the final one will be airing next weekend. I'll really miss it, but it had a very good five-year run especially considering how there are so few stations now that play music from the 50s and 60s. No word on what will happen to the show's iHeart channel, but for the time being it's still available, and the three-show rotation was updated today to include yesterday's show.

When the late Ron Smith (who was also a former DJ) announced in late December 2018 that he would be shutting down his excellent oldiesmusic.com site at the end of the year, it was due to a combination of the cost of running it and the fact that he wanted to move on to other things. I was barely able to get the Oldies Music Board set up in time to notify people on the former board before it disappeared, and so I didn't explore trying to see if there might have been a way of preserving all of the other info on the site somewhere else (aside from what can still be found via archive.org).
However, when I saw Dale's post I wondered if there might be a way of preserving 440's info, and if the World Radio History site might be a possibility. Turns out that the person who runs that site is already aware of 440's impending closure, and he's going to look into obtaining the info from it ... see message #3 at the link below. I hope that he will be able to do so.

The conditions relating to pre-1956 music didn't prohibit them from playing such recordings; rather, they allowed for a lower level of Canadian content for periods consisting of either entirely pre-1956 music, or of at least 90% pre-1956 music. They were consistent with what can be found at the CRTC's Canadian content requirements for music on Canadian radio:

Popular older music – condition of licence
Two conditions of licence will allow commercial radio stations to broadcast less than 35% Canadian content required for popular music. Broadcasters can apply for these conditions.

  • Pre-1956 music: in program periods where all of the popular music broadcast is composed before 1956, at least 2% each week must be Canadian; in periods where 90% or more of popular music consists of selections composed before 1956, at least 10% must be Canadian
  • Oldies music: in any broadcast week where at least 90% of the popular music aired consists of selections released before January 1 1981, at least 30% must be Canadian, both on a weekly basis and between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday

"Timothy" was indeed a hit on Billboard and CHUM in 1971, but it came out in February 1970 and charted in many places that year as well. From one of the comments at 45cat.com:

The chart life in the US of Timothy is one that certainly is out of the ordinary. There are #1 Billboard records whose chart life on the Billboard Hot 100 was 10 weeks or LESS. Timothy spent 17 total weeks on the official Hot #100 not including the gaps where it fell off the chart. It ended 1971 as the #87 song of the year.

Timothy was issued by Scepter in February of 1970 with little or no fanfare and promotion. It immediately was a hit in their hometown of Wilkes-Barre, PA. Every month from then until the end of 1970, it charted in different parts of the US. February and March in PA, April in PA and GA, May in PA, June, July August, and September NY, October UT and CO, November and December in CT and UT (and those are only the locales listed on ARSA chart website). All of this activity without ever entering the Billboard Hot 100.

Finally, on January 2, 1971, it generated enough activity to debut on the Hot 100 at #93. 11 months after it was released. The very next week it fell off the Hot 100....for 4 weeks it did not chart and resurfaced on the 2/6/71 Hot 100 at #100. For only one week. It fell off the chart again for two weeks. It resurfaced again on 2/27/71 at #99. It then started its climb as word of mouth spread about this unconventional disc.

The climb was faster at that point: 99-95-73-67-64-42-41-32-26-17-17-19-19-30-32, losing and gaining its "bullet" many times. Definitely the most talked about record in 1971...

The disc was never "resissued." it was simple matter of different parts of the country started playing the disc which generated the sales. This will always be one of my favorite 70s records.

I'm certainly not one to defend Coulter, and I would agree that she was wrong to say that Canada was part of the Vietnam War. However, there were a significant number of Canadians who volunteered to serve in the US forces during the war, and I wonder if she might have conflated that with the idea that we were involved as a country.

I wonder why they used the American spelling of "color" in the print ads rather than the Canadian spelling we all grew up with "colour".

My guess is that it might have been because of the past practice of many Canadian publications to use American spellings. From Wikipedia's article on Canadian English:

[b]Throughout part of the 20th century, some Canadian newspapers adopted American spellings,[43] for example, color as opposed to the British-based colour. Some of the most substantial historical spelling data can be found in Dollinger (2010)[44] and Grue (2013).[45] The use of such spellings was the long-standing practice of the Canadian Press perhaps since that news agency's inception, but visibly the norm prior to World War II.[46] The practice of dropping the letter u in such words was also considered a labour-saving technique during the early days of printing in which movable type was set manually.[46] Canadian newspapers also received much of their international content from American press agencies, so it was much easier for editorial staff to leave the spellings from the wire services as provided.[47]

In the 1990s, Canadian newspapers began to adopt the British spelling variants such as -our endings, notably with The Globe and Mail changing its spelling policy in October 1990.[48] Other Canadian newspapers adopted similar changes later that decade, such as the Southam newspaper chain's conversion in September 1998.[49] The Toronto Star adopted this new spelling policy in September 1997 after that publication's ombudsman discounted the issue earlier in 1997.[47][50] The Star had always avoided using recognized Canadian spelling, citing the Gage Canadian Dictionary in their defence. Controversy around this issue was frequent. When the Gage Dictionary finally adopted standard Canadian spelling, the Star followed suit. Some publishers, e.g. Maclean's, continue to prefer American spellin
