SOWNY » Change to WNED-DT channel line up (for OTA only) » February 3, 2025 3:36 pm |
Just a heads up for Buffalo area OTA viewers that WNED-DT recently added subchannel 17-10 to their line up. The content is a live cam view off their downtown Buffalo studios, located near the Skyway. Their are two audio streams: WNED-FM and WBFO-FM. Using your SAP selector should allow you to toggle between each. Note the audio level is much louder than WNED TV, so be ready to knock the volume down.
This service isn't new and has been running for years as a hidden service within their transport. Some off-brand TV's would detect it as a valid service and map it as 31-10. I was told some time back that the service (specifically WNED-FM) was put there as a backhaul for Rogers. The reason it will now be visible to all TV's is that it is now defined in WNED's TVCT stream. This stream is part of the ATSC standard to identify the services to your TV when it locks on to the transport stream. If your set doesn't automatically add it when you next tune WNED-DT, you may need to do a rescan.

Unfortunately, I think DAB's demise in Canada was inevitable. It really was a step down in terms of station selection, as only the major Toronto broadcasters were represented on the few L-band bouquets broadcast off the CN Tower. There was nothing unique in terms of offerings, other than being able to hear the big Toronto AM stations in hi-fidelity. The fact that the USA wanted nothing to do with it as DAB wasn't developed there, I think made it a difficult sell in this country. It would have been akin to Canada adopting the PAL TV colour standard back in the day. We are tied in economically to being interoperable with the USA, whether we like it or not. Yes, the great state of Canada.
I lived in Europe for a bit and thought their deployment of DAB was well thought out. To TVGUY's point, the selection of VHF spectrum (just above the TV band III, aka VHF-Hi) gave it similar propagation characteristics to the FM band. Contrast that with Canada's choice of L-band which is more line of sight. I bought a DAB-ready car receiver back in 2001 at Media Markt, which is a German electronics retailer. The model was the Blaupunkt Toronto and it paired up with Blaupunkt's D-Fire outboard DAB receiver. It was dual band so I knew I could use it in Germany and Canada. Back here, I threw the whole thing in a metal chassis (preferable to wood, IMHO :-) and would test propagation by sitting it on the passenger seat and drive around the city with an L-band antenna on the car roof. I remember it locked the streams up until you got to the top of the Oak Ridges moraine - north of that point, nada. The setup wound up as my workshop radio for a number of years until the radio's display failed. Meanwhile, most of the commercial CN Tower DAB streams stopped (I think) around 2006, leaving the just the CBC bouquet which eventually went dark. Yes, CBC of course had its own bouquet stream while the other stations shared with each other.
I think we can only lament what could have been, if onl
SOWNY » Old Toronto Star building to be demolished » December 10, 2024 8:52 pm |
I like the phase "Our Program Manager checks every album against the 'Enjoyment Index' set by listeners just like you". Sounds more like if he doesn't like it, it didn't get played. Would be interesting to see the listener template he used.
As for the demise of the TorStar building, I can't see it really being missed all that much. It pretty much gets lost in the city skyline these days anyway. Considering the era it was built, I'm also wondering if there could be asbestos in the building materials that is just too costly to remediate.

Would have to wonder why this operation would want to be first-adjacent to CBL-FM, a nearby Class C1 broadcaster that is owned by the CBC and who's signal is protected in that area.

Saw this article this morning and thought it was worth sharing. It tells the story of how much viewing information (metadata) is obtained from users of the embedded apps now installed on most TV's sold today and the monetary value of that data. For those of you who don't tether your TV to your home Internet and only view broadcasts via OTA, you still have your privacy. That may not be the case though when ATSC 1.0 is eventually replaced by 3.0.

Ok. I find CKDO's 1580 AM signal decent within Toronto, unless you are driving near a noisy power line. The 107.7 FM repeater (also from the Lake Ridge tower with 95.9) is highly directional and only starts to become listenable in east Scarborough. Pretty solid through south Durham though. Guessing they have to protect the adjacent 107.9's operating in Burlington and Cobourg, as well as 107.5 in Barrie.

Probably to no one's surprise, this ad targets a younger demo. It looks to be made in the UK and the artist providing the vocals is IRAH, from the UK's Drum and Bass scene. Kind of Interesting though that they brought the ad over here, as I don't think DNB has a big following.

And if you want to hear a bit more of him (probably not likely):

I could see 94.7 being very spotty around Toronto due to adjacent’ s 94.9 Oshawa and 94.5 Buffalo. RA, I suspect your radio is leaning more towards 94.5 to decode the CHKX HD signal as WNED is much weaker. Still some interference though as WNED also uses HD, so they compete for the same slice of spectrum. For 95.9, a bit harder to say where the issue is, other than the HD synchronous repeater on the FCP that might end up impairing the HD signal overall. For example, where I live, the 95.9 analog signal suffers a lot of multipath distortion as the FCP and Lake Ridge signals are about equal in strength. Oddly, Durham Radio is the only broadcaster I know of that likes to create situations of potential interference with its own signals.
As for CING 95.3, other than for some local interference in that particular area you were in, I'm not sure. There’s nothing within 80 miles on either adjacent.

What's interesting is that he carried out the work during the daytime, as back then all of CBLT's viewership would have relied on the signal from that antenna. The CBLT sequence was possibly filmed in the morning before sign on. As a kiddie, I recall that CBLT would have kids programming beginning at 10 am on weekday mornings... So it is possible that this work was being done at 7 or 8 am... relatively simple and quick if this was a "simple" lamp change on the upper beacon...
That's possible, Glen. I know even in the late 80's, CBLT didn't sign on until 9am. I think Bill Lawrence used to do the voice over for the sign on. With that film, it was hard to say if all those scenes were shot around the same time. The CNE was pretty crowded so I thought it might have been filmed in the afternoon.

My 1965 Toronto mindset would suggest that the CHUM booth at the CNE has just announced a free giveaway over their PA. My 2024 Toronto mindset would suspect there is an active shooter in the area.

Short footage of possibly might be an early version of a steady cam, used in a helicopter while flying over the downtown area. The film appears to have been restored and is very clear with excellent colour. Notable to this forum is a segment at 1:15, where the camera pans in on a worker atop (what I presume) is the former CBLT transmission antenna on Jarvis St. You can see him perched on the top of the ch 6 batwing antenna and it looks as if he might have been replacing the lamp in the aircraft warning beacon above it.

I agree with RA on this one in that they should have out of respect. CITY-TV is carried by many cable systems in Ontario and both satellite BDU's, whereas CityNews is only for Rogers subs. Probably Rogers didn't want to loose the Price is Right viewership to the US CBS affiliates, which run it at the same time. It's a business decision and under the current environment, they can't afford to lose the revenue. I just see it as a sign of how tight things have become.

I think Saul would be the person to answer that. Good to hear though as the AM band gets quieter and quieter, especially on the Canadian side of the border. Just to mention that WDCX 990 seems to have gone dark as of late last week. Website shows no mention of a change so might be a transmitter problem. It's normally weak where I am so it could also be running low power on a temporary basis.

Interesting though that when you look at the Buffalo market, Urban WBLK and Classic 97 Rock are at the top of the ratings. Urban doesn't even show up in that national list.
Regarding religious broadcasting moving towards the top of popular American radio formats, I'm not too surprised either. The EMF has been buying up distressed radio properties, such as the former WTSS 102.5 from the troubled Audacy group. One of EMF's main reasons was the quality signal the station puts into Ontario. Crawford Broadcasting's religious WDCX (99.5 FM / 970 & 990 AM Buffalo/Rochester) doesn't have a good signal into the GTA, yet it solicits a lot of its advertising revenue from businesses in that area. It goes to prove that you don't need a blowtorch of a signal to bring in an audience if you are providing what (the remaining) people listening to radio are looking for.
If I had a crystal ball, I would predict that CFNY 102.1 will soon be acquired by a religious broadcaster. As we know, it's parent company is in financial distress. Aside from 102.1 giving a superior quality signal to the GTA, it would help repatriate advertising dollars that are now going south of the border and I think we all know how the CRTC feels about that. Some detractors for CFNY are that its current alternative rock format is targeting a younger demographic that likes to stream music. Also, CFNY's format is not unique to the market as it competes with Indie 88. Even CFNY's sister station, Q107 is now taking on some of its playlist. Another interesting fact is that the Canadian arm of religious broadcaster UCB keeps delaying the launch of its Scarborough LPFM operation. UCB own a network of FM stations, including nearby markets Peterborough, Belleville and Cobourg and have been granted an extension to Oct 2025 to get Scarborough on air. The Scarborough signal will only cover a small portion of Toronto due to its low power and antenna height, plus there is co-channel interference

I can appreciate that. While tuned to Global or CBLT, have you tried unplugging the power supply to the amp? When unpowered, they typically go into a lossy, passive mode of operation, meaning only the stongest signals continue to make it through. With your close location, both Global and CBLT may still get passed, thought at a very reduced level. This test could help determine if the outdoor amp is causing your issue.
