SOWNY » Are AM Stations Authorized To Go HD In Canada? » April 25, 2025 12:08 pm |
from my understanding there is 2 AM HD radio stations in Canada. CHLO for many years, and last year one in Quebec came online!

Never worked a board with potentiometers. I've used Ward-Beck and Wheatstone boards, both are equipped with sliders/faders.
Until reading the topic of this thread, I didn't think there was a difference between "slider" and "fader", they're the same thing to me.
yea im having a trouble understanding the difference between slider and fader, are they not the same?! Wheatstone boards have faders right? and i know McCurdy made both linear potentiometer (fader/ slider) and turn potentiometer (what i always called pots or turn pots) boards. though I'm no where near old enough to have ever seen one in action lol!
SOWNY » Brian Lilley Attacks The CRTC On CFRB » March 3, 2025 2:19 pm |
tip toe around the CRTC? have you read a technical brief, or a reply to a CRTC response! plenty of engineers, legal council and well versed station managers have subtlety discovered 101 ways to tell the CRTC to GFYS and every time i read one it makes me smile!
SOWNY » Have You Voted Already Or Plan To Vote On Feb 27th? » February 27, 2025 11:38 am |
i voted this morning, went to my old elementary school, the girl checking my ID did not seem trilled about the fact that i never received the voting slip, " not enough time to call an election, plus all the snow last few weeks delayed postal," (i have a community mailbox so i doubt it) i reminded her " and we came off the strike so they must of been backlogged" and she agreed " yes what a terrible time to call an election" i wouldn't consider this partisanship. But certainly an interesting exchange!
SOWNY » Is "Zonecasting" The Next Big Thing For FM Radio? How Does It Work? » December 24, 2024 11:50 am |
great! ill just deploy my collection of vintage FM exciters that's taking up storage space lol!
if there is one thing that drives me crazy, its trying to get onto the roof tops of some of these buildings downtown, it is harder to get clearance from their internal management, then it is for the CN tower,
so deploying a vast network of little synced FMs is not a exciting prospect for this guy.
maybe if you only look after 1 FM you might have the time?
anyway besides that i don't think "this is it" "the regulation to save radio" that US broadcasters keep asking the FCC for! and as for the CRTC... last i checked they were still "out of the office"
MERRY CHRISTMAS FOLKS!

btw, defund is not close shop!
cbc seems to be beloved across the nation i am sure they can drum up ad revenue like the rest of us... worst case they can follow the PBS model!
once we cut them loose, if they fail its on them, and if they site that "operating TV and Radio in the modern era is not sustainable" then we should all in unison turn and look at the CRTC
who would also apparently be on the chopping block

This is really bizarre but I just listened to the HD 3 on 95.3 FM which used to carry CHML and the RDS still lists the station and they are carrying the static from the AM signal from AM 900. Someone asleep at the wheel or is this a statement.
i came to say this, i was playing with my HD receiver an hour ago and the 95.3 FM HD3 is still active and still playing static!
i wonder if its a AM tuner they had set to 900 at the FM site... and i wonder if it has been picking up any DXing lol!

i was giving 1150 a listen and its all my kind of music, but why would i listen to it on AM when i got 107.1 and 91.7 for all my classic rock? in my opinion as one under 30, the only way AM works today, is for talk and news... and sometimes sports!

Also surprised that there is no Live to Air from a Club show on Z103.5 except Thursdays *(Friday 12am) midnight for one hour from Soluna and a Sunday afternoon 2 to 5pm LTA from Cabana
Was it not that long ago that there was LTA's on Thursday-sunday's, every night from about 10pm to 1 or 2am?
Has the club scene died down or is radio not worth it anymore for cost of advertising?
i suspect it has something more to do with the regulations around live or mixed content and canon, and less to do with the clubs them selves.

he is apparently quite active in the local music scene tho, so if you wanna see him play, you could probably catch him playing in a local pub or something.

The National Archives of Canada has an extensive collection of broadcast material dating back to the 1920s, including some sound material from the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, which was the forerunner of the CBC.
My question is when we have the national archives, why is the broadcasting museum keeping antique records on file. Maybe it’s because I’m a gear head but I would expect to see room full of massive AM and TV transmitters and vintage CBC branded pocket radios, reel to reels, old mixers and maybe a early mobile broadcast van!
Like what ever happened to the CBC shortwave transmitter, that sort of thing should be on display, or first FM transmitter placed on the CN tower!
Even the old combiner that I’m sure they will start to tear up is a contender for a monumental part of Canadian broadcasting history!
Like when I go to the aerospace museum, I wanna see the planes, not the flight logs… unless they are posted in front of said plane!

looking at their plan options, it would be nice if they had a cheap plan like all access app only but instead car only, I never used it online or the app, and i have no desire.
would be even nicer if i can build my own plan, pick 50 or 30 stations, car only, for like a Toonie a month. I might consider returning then
