I remember flying a few times with Henry Shannon while at CFRB and CKFM. At least once in a Bell Jet Ranger and on other occasions in the "Twin Comanche" fixed wing. I can't remember the dates of the transition to the different aircraft. When they went to the Twin Comanche they did Cottage Country Traffic because of the extended range of the aircraft. I believe that CFRB always flew out of Buttonville Airport.

I don't know about traffic reports after newscasts, but Eddie Luther began doing helicopter traffic reports for CFRB in 1961. The "CHUM Chopper" began flying over Toronto soon after. I am not sure when CKEY started their helicopter reports. I suspect it came after the switch to an MOR format in early 1965.
The appended news article says 1964 for CKEY

Agree with you about caleb. I had trouble remembering one of is predecessors on Blue Jays Central …Greg Zaun….I found that Zaun’s ego got in the way too often…though I liked his Sunday rants…. Caleb also called a few games in the last couple of weeks in the broadcast booth with Dan S, and he is turning into a really good play-by-play announcer. I’m also finding that Joe sittle is “stepping up to the plate” (pardon the pun) in his booth work with Dan S. If you watch MLB games with other teams’ broadcast teams, you will realize how good the Blue Jays crew is. The NESN crew always puts us to sleep. Just wish that Zwelling and Ben hyphenated-smith would dial down those meaningless statistics.

I had a multiband sony about 38 years ago which I carried with me throughout asia. I loved that radio to death. Sadly no photo, and the radio literally fell apart from its travels. I have some very happy memories of receiving BBC and VOA in English on the Island of Rawa (probably not on a map), about 1 hour boat ride offshore Malaysia's coast. You had to "know" the island's owner to go there. The island is the "sister island" (much smaller) than Teoman, where they filmed South Pacific. Nothing but palm trees, fresh coconuts, rustic accommodations, and a wonderful beach. The cuisine was seafood, locally caught. I might add, best snorkelling I've ever done...manta rays, and every description of large colourful fish, just off the dock. The sharks kept their distance to the other side of the tiny island...but that's another sory. I mention my Rawa adventure, because there was no RF interference---they turned off their little generator around 10 pm. There was no RFI...best place to DX I've ever been to. But there was no FM reception...and this pre-dated cell phones, internet, etc.
There's a photo of Rawa island (today)

I will provide an assessment of the XHDATA 808 next week. Ordered it from Aliexpress a few days ago. With a “coupon” it priced out at less than $120 CDN - express shipping included. I can’t beleive the speed of getting it from China to Toronto…I suspect that with Trump’s China tariffs, not much is flowing to the US from Aliexpress or Temu…hence the discounts and record breaking shipping times via air and express ground service. BTW, I don’t think there is a radio out there (portable) with DRM…or any other of the European digital “standards”. The chinese are manufacturing for a world market, and oddly DAB doesn’t seem to be available in radios from Temu or AliExpress.

Muffaraw Joe's critique is right on. Approx 4 years ago when I bought a car with streaming, I switched over to WBGO and haven't gone back to CJRT, with the exception of situations where streaming failed. Pat Prescott has a 4-hour show every day called Favorite Things - noon - 4 pm where she has a theme for each 2-hour segment. It is very well researched - by herself and Reggie Jackson who was road manager for the Jazz Crusaders. I find with CJRT there are songs that make me wonder "why" are they being played???? My second choice is TSF Jazz from Paris - a fully commercial radio station. They have several live to air concerts each day - mainly European Jazz artists. It never ceases to amaze me how much live music they broadcast, versus the "canned and stale" shows on CJRT. Last comment, I'm not a Heather Bambrick fan...so that was the beginning of the end for me, when she got more and more airtime.

Yes, I understand the royalty issue, but the streaming channel isn’t financially viable…really??? They could put it on 92.5 very easily, and swap 680’s feed to 98.1. I suspect 680 will have far more listeners on HD than the “Rocket” will ever accumulate. But then, it’s Rogers.

This goes back a long time but when shoreacres broadcasting (Jack Kent Cooke) owned CKEY the station moved from 580 to 590 kc. I remember the move-day and there was a series of tones broadcast on the two transmitters to direct listeners to tune “up” the dial. This took place in 1964 and 580 was used in Windsor (CKWW). CKEY 580 had been on Toronto Island. I don’t know if 590 started at Grimsby or whether it broadcast from the Island. One other frequency change. CIRV-fm began on 88.7 but the co-channel interference was severe from WBFO Buffalo, (a lot of tropo interference spring/fall) so after a couple of years, they were approved to move to 88.9 MHz. I believe that Frank Alvarez would not have received a licence if he hadn't applied for a co-channel "drop in" on a Buffalo frequency...so that he did not use any of the remaining Toronto FM frequency allocatons.

Tonight I noticed a new HD subcarrier on CHFI HD-2. The channel bils itself as “The Rocket”. With liners “Canada’s Rock and Role Flamethrower”. (That cycles through on RDS) I’m not familiar with the format — alternative? Artists include Rob Zombie (Living Dead Girl), Papa Roach (last resort)
I did not hear announcers or station IDs so I don’t know whether it is rebroadcasting another Rogers station from another market.
I would have thought that Rogers would have put money makers like CFTR on 98.1 with its superior coverage.
What’s the back story on the Rocket?

Yes, it is metal strapping. It bends very well to form a helix. The polarization of the NOAA weather satellites is “right hand polarization” - so, the straps are cut for optimal perfmance at 137 MHZ.
The straps are also light weight so don’t pose a significant wind load.

The photo was received from a NOAA weather satellite transmitting on 137.100 MHZ. It has a polar orbit which means that transmissions can be received in toronto for approximately 13 minutes per pass, a few times each day. Other NOAA satellites transmit on 137.620 and 137.9125. The photo shows weather conditions from the western part of Greenalnd, south to the Mexican Peninsula around Cancuun. Here is a home-made QFH antenna which I designed for weather satellite reception. Consists of some commonly found parts from Home Depot.

I get multiple (automated) transmissions each day using a computer and a home-made antenna and RTL-SDR stick. I tried to upload a photo of one of the satellite passes from Thursday, but not having any luck wth the big yellow board system.
SOWNY » Another Reason To Worry About The Future Of OTA Broadcast TV » April 16, 2025 9:48 am |
Misleading headline. If you click through, to the pie chart, "broadcast" - which is OTA gets 20.5%. Much higher than the 10.5 % headline.
The 10.5 figure, relates to some streaming services -which on a per service have a much lower viewing statistic. What's interesting about the pie chart graphic is the share for "cable" which is 24%. How much of that might be attributed to current programs on cable channels owned by the OTA networks that have a 2nd run on a delayed basis on a cable channel - like USA network, which would bolster ratings for the programs. I agree with you, OTA viewing shares are plumetting.

CityTV Toronto and various Citytv branded stations owned by Rogers in Montreal, Calgary, Winnipeg and Vancouver are all up on Bell Satellite and the Bell Fibe App.
I suspect that Rogers withdrew their "rights" granted to Bell to provide Video on Demand content for Citytv.
That would be, likely because of the spat between Rogers and Bell over the re-launch of HGTV Food Network etc. Bear in mind that Rogers is very actively promoting Citytv+ streaming service, which is primarily a video on demand service, within its own broadcasts on Sportsnet, Citytv, etc.
I very much doubt that Bell "dropped" the Citytv VOD content. I think Rogers has blocked Bell. By the way there is no regulatory obligation for a Canadian broadcaster to provide VOD content. But, there's a big qualifier. If for example, Rogers is providing Citytv VOD content to its own systems, such as Calgary and Toronto, and is refusing to provide the same content to Bell, Bell might have an argument, under the "undue preference/undue disadvantage" rules of the CRTC that Rogers is subjecting Bell to an undue disadvantage with respect to the VOD content. It would likely take a complaint from a member of the public, such as your friend to get the ball rolling with the CRTC. Worthwhile to see if Citytv VOD content is on the rogers systems - without a subscription to Citytv+.
I should also add I only have the "basic" Bell satellite service, plus a sports package and one US additional service. So, I can confirm that Citytv is in the basic - lowest level package everywhere.

From CARTT:Corus Entertainment announced last Friday it has completed an agreement to amend and restate its credit agreement dated Oct. 24, 2024, extending the maturity date to March 20, 2027.The credit facility has been amended to, among other things, increase the maximum amount Corus may request as an advance on a revolving basis to $75 million, remove certain requirements to use excess cash to repay the outstanding amounts on such advances, and fix the interest rate per annum equal to the two-year Canada interest rate determined on March 17, 2025, plus 4.75 per cent, explained a March 21 press release from Corus.“This is an important and significant step in progressing our capital and debt plan, accomplished with the cooperation of lenders and constructive support of key debt investors,” John Gossling, co-CEO and chief financial officer of Corus, said in a statement. “We are better positioned to create sustainability in our business, and we expect our efforts to right-size will be ongoing as we anticipate ongoing shifts and factors affecting our industry in the near term. That said, today’s announcement clearly reinforces our commitment and ability to provide Canadians with the shows, news and audio content they love and expect from Corus.”The media company previously reorganized its credit arrangement in September to pay down what was then more than $1 billion of debt. A month later, it bought itself more time to pay down its debt. The company has become leaner to balance its media output while keeping its finances in check. RED FM is a trade name used by three stations which are controlled by Kulwinder Sanghera of Vancouver.
The original station is CKYE-FM Vancouver 93.1 - transmits from Mt Seymour and there is a rebroadcaster in Surrey BC. The second licence he received Is CKYR-FM Calgary. His company purchased CIRV-FM Toronto from Frank Alvarez. When Alvarez owned the station it had a lot of Portuguese programming and a fair amount of Chinese and Punjabi Programming. For many years, Fairchild purchased airtime on CIRV-FM, during those hours of the day when the CRTC forbid them from running Chinese programming on 1430 CHKT. Each of the RED FM stations, originates most of its programming within its respective market. The CRTC conditions of licence - for each RED FM station, require a significant number of languages (other than Punjabi) and a significant number of ethnic groups to be served each week.
In any event the branding RED FM, stands for "Reflecting Ethnic Diversity".

SOWNY » Wanted: An Engineer To Explain This HD Radio Issue » February 24, 2025 11:28 am |
Skywave will know this answer, but I’ll give it a try. My experience with assymetrical goes back to a severe interference case in Vancouver/Bellingham. The first adjacent on KISM 92.9 (Bellingham) operating in HD was causing severe interference to analogue CKYE-FM 93.1 Vancouver. Over a day or two, back around 2014 or 2015, the stations cooperated and the “upper sideband” - closer to 93.1 was lowered, and measurements were taken. KISM abruptly stopped cooperating on the 2nd day of testing. I had understood at one time that Durham Radio might have used assymetrical on KX 94.7 Hamilton to protect their analogue Rock 95 signal cominng from Oshawa. Not sure if that was a test or made permanent. Based on the engineering measurements in the Vancouver situation, there was some noticible reducton of interference to 93.1 Vancouver, particularly as you got closer to the boarder around White Rock BC. But as I noted Saga walked away fron the testing. I don't know the parameters of the proposal to the FCC, and whether the energy directed to "one side" of the sideband, could significantly exceed the energy levels currently permitted with symettrical HD transmission.
