Backstory: When I was learning to write copy in about 1983, Bob Humenick gave me a massive box full of award-winning radio commercials from the RAB and the RBC to learn from. The transcript below is one of many I committed to memory.

...but now I need the actual audio for a project I'm working on.  The last few days I've asked Larry MacInnis, Mike Occomore, Terry O'Reilly, the legendary pack-rat Doug Thompson, and even Lisa Orkin... and while almost everybody remembers the spot, nobody remembers who the VO talent was, and nobody has it.  Not even the RAB.

I even asked Dick Orkin about it a few years back. He said, "That sounds a lot like something I would have written, but it's not mine."

The GUY in the VO sounded a lot like some of the dim-witted characters that Dick used to do, but in a lower vocal range.  (I think he also did the spot for King Oscar Sardines where the director complained that he was saying his S's funny, so asked him to edit out the S's as he did the read.)
I wish I could offer more guidance, but that's all I've got.

ANY leads would be appreciated.  Thank you.
Here's the script:
SFX: (door knocks & opens)

MAN: Hi, are you Mary?

WOMAN: Yes, are you —

MAN: Bob, your blind date. Listen, I hope you’re ready; I thought we’d skip the restaurant and just have dinner with my folks.

WOMAN: Oh!

MAN: Here’s your copy of the pre-nup, I also found a nice little three-bedroom bungalow we could look at, and – do you like kids? I thought we could -

WOMAN: (interrupting) Wow, you move awfully fast.

MAN: Yeah, well, I work for Sir Speedy.

WOMAN: Oh?

MAN: Yeah, at Sir Speedy we do printing and copying and we do it fast – sometimes while you wait. So I got into the habit of doing everything fast.

WOMAN: Including getting dressed?

MAN: Yeah, how’d you know?

WOMAN: You forgot your pants.

MAN: Oh. Right. Well, I had a nice time, g’bye.

SFX: (door closes)

Excellent question, Mr. Patterson.     Likewise nostalgia radio.    What does one think of when the year 1980 is musically recalled?    "Another Brick in the Wall" (Pink Floyd) that stayed at #1 for four (4) weeks?   Or "Another One bites the Dust" (Queen) that was #1 for three (3) weeks?

This morning's Top Ten at Ten on AM 740 ignored those in favor of tunes such as "Sailing" (Chris Cross), "Shining Star" (Manhattans) and "Cupid" (Spinners).     In a more recent post, the board moderator asks "how to fix what's wrong" . . . could credibility bring some back?

They're playing the top hits from August 1980. "Another One Bites The Dust" didn't peak until October of that year after debuting on the Hot 100 on August 16. "Another Brick in the Wall" peaked in January 1980 and had left the charts by August.

Not surprisingly, Dale is 100% correct.  Top Ten at Ten is ALWAYS the songs from THIS WEEK in whatever year we decide to profile.  Sometimes, admittedly, the chart itself is a hybrid of the Hot 100 and the CHUM Chart simply to breathe some fresh air into it.

Only exception in our methodology is the Friday Top Ten at Ten, which is the #1 song from this week in different years. So tomorrow, it'll be ten different songs that were all #1 on August 10th... which continues over to The Next Eleven at Eleven.

I've always wondered about radio station music charts. Did music directors really call each and every record store to find out the sales numbers? Or if it was just a sampling of stores, how was it decided which stores were chosen for the sampling? Getting the figures alone would be labour-intensive, but nothing compared to the task of adding up all the figures in that pre-computer age and sorting them into a ranking. I imagine it must have been tempting on a busy week, and close to deadline, just to make up some of it. Just saying.

Did anybody here ever put together a radio station music chart, or know how it was done? Please share. There would probably be some good stories.

I used to do one for CKAR in Oshawa back around 1981 - 1983 or so; Dan Wilmott was the PD, and a really good one at that.  I used to have a list of the 7 main record stores in town at the time, and once a week I'd call the manager at each store and ask them to rank the sales on a particular 45 from 1-5.  By the end, every song would have a score somewhere between 0 and 35, and I'd sort 'em in order, research the tracks and write the script, then hand it off to Tarzan Dan for voicetracking - mind you, he was "Mike Daniels" in those days.

Can't remember what we did to break ties, though.

Thanks, Dale, for introducing pesky little things like facts into the conversation.

To back up what Dale says with some further context, MusicMaster says we play that track about once every five and a half days for the last few years.  And several of those plays come during the all-night show.

Wanna go back further?  Since January 1, 2015, we've played a song with Tom Jones on it 846 times - roughly one every thirty hours or so.  If you don't count the all-night plays, there's a Tom Jones song twice a week.  Not a bad average for a guy with a couple dozen hit songs who's sold more than 100 million records.

...but please... I don't want the truth to foul up anyone's analysis.  Let's pretend one song runs "3, 4, 5 times a day".

I wasn't a Partridge Family fan - just out of the demo at the time, I guess - but I was still saddened to hear about David Cassidy's passing at such an early age. Not unexpectedly, the story has been all over the radio in the past 24 hours. But the one thing that's surprised me is what's not being heard.

Every story I've heard on this has played a Partridge Family or David Cassidy song. So far, they've aired snippets of the TV show theme, Cassidy's version of "Cherish" and a few tunes I don't even recognize. But not one station I've tuned into has played an excerpt from "I Think I Love You," the only Partridge Family song to hit number one and unarguably their biggest hit of all time.

Is it because those writing and producing the obits are too young to recall this song or is something else at work? Either way, I find it odd that a singer's biggest hit has been completely absent from the story on his death.

Uh... on Zoomer Radio, we played "I Think I Love You" in full during the 6am and 8am hours, and a clip from the song in every newscast until the afternoon.

(Sorry to be a wet blanket... just wanted to correct the record.  Mind you, I keep reading thread after thread here from people who still think we play Pat Boone and dwell outside the top ten stations in the city, so I get that we're not necessarily the #1 button on everyone's presets here.)

Correct.

But the Duran video is good instruction for those who haven't seen it done properly. Which is why I'm trying to locate it.

Hey radio friends... anyone know where a guy can find the video of Elvis Duran coaching a contest winner while he was recording the call (and, if memory serves, threatening to take the prize away if they didn't bring their energy level up and sound more excited)?

At least... I think it was Elvis.  But I spent half an hour going down a rabbit hole on YouTube looking for it to no avail.

I figure if you people can't help me, I'll have to reach out to Dan O'Day or somebody.

Not sure what you mean by "local".

I moved here from Montreal in '92 and I have always pronounced both "T"s in Toronto.
Given that a full 50% of Toronto residents are foreign born, never mind including those originating from other parts of Ontario or Canada, I doubt that the majority pronounce it "Toronna". So I suggest this instance would be a non-issue.

I'm with Ben Affleck and the CIA agent who consulted on Argo, who said that pronouncing the second "T" is something native Torontonians tend not to do (unless they're going out of their way to pronounce it "correctly" for some specific reason).

If I'm in New York, and I hear you refer to Houston Street with the same pronunciation as the city in Texas, I know you're not from New York.

Building a station that's designed to steal market share from a more highly-rated station is, to me, like deliberately aiming to be an also-ran.  Sure, somebody could get a new stick in Toronto and steal market share from CHFI with the city's seventeenth Hot AC station, but why be one of a bunch when you could be one of one?

The earlier comment was correct: With the right format, they could very quickly become one of the dominant stations in the market.

I haven't "had 2nd thoughts about whether this was a good idea".  Because I never thought it was a good idea.  I thought it was a great idea.

Not surprisingly, Dale is absolutely right - it's like trying to build "a good bullpen" and finding out that Mariano Rivera can still throw a 92 mph slider for strikes, and would love to come throw the occasional inning for your team. Can't imagine a programmer worth their salt turning down an opportunity like that.

The thing is, Kilgore, your opening sentence above is incredibly relevant for what Zoomer Radio was until two summers ago; since then, most online comments about us appear to be from people who obviously haven't listened in a very, very long time.

Mr. Hedley, why is Alan Gelman no longer co-hosting the Saturday morning Neighborhood Garage program?

Two things:

1)  Mr. Hedley was my father.  I go by "Neil", if it's all the same.

2)  Sometimes, a day off is just a day off. Alan wasn't on the show last Saturday because every once in a while, one of the guys has something else to do. He's back this weekend, and the guys will be doing their best to raise funds to help the Red Cross' efforts in Fort McMurray.

Sorry, guys... again - didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Funny stuff.

For the record, The Nineties at Nine has been gone for about a year, maybe longer.

As for Tarzan... he's Norm's fill-in guy.  Anyone who suggests otherwise is speculating, although Dan and I have been having a good chuckle over some of the rumors. He even started a couple of them.

Sorry for the off-topic post, by the way. Was just replying.
