CHAY's huge highway 400 billboard was situated just north of Toronto and was designed to look like an actual provincial highway sign.  "CHAY FM 93.1 for the next 300 km" was the first version.  Here is the second version!

CHAY-FM launched on the May long weekend in 1977, 45 years ago, and enjoyed a long run first as elevator music with a solid newsroom and later as soft rock, still with an outstanding newsroom.  We had a good run!

As programming elements and people were being slashed all around me, ( including me!!) a former Corus sales manager said to me that he didn't care what anything sounded like as long as he made more money.  The full service newsroom at that station was eliminated.

Former CHOW rock jock, CKCO-TV, CKVR-TV News Anchor, CHAY-FM News Director/Operations Manager and then owner of CKLP-FM Parry Sound, Bob Bowland, hosts a terrific oldies show on www.parrysoundradio.com every Saturday night from 7pm until midnight, and played again Sundays starting at noon. The music selection is excellent and Bob clearly is having a blast delivering the show!

We used DAT for a brief period of time in the new CHAY-FM studios after seeing DAT tapes in use at CFQR-FM in Montreal.  The quality was excellent but it was always difficult for the announcer to cue to the beginning of the song. Shortly after the brief DAT experiment we dumped all of our music on to DCS hard drives for playback.

Nothing wrong with it so long as you don't care about your ratings.

Not "ratings",  but instead, ratings in a very specific listening group.

Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith peaked at #36 on Billboard on July 19th, 1975.  Gimme All Your Lovin’ by ZZ Top peaked at #37 on May 21st 1983 on Billboard.  Daisy Jane by America peaked at #20 in 1975.  Working at the Carwash Blues by Jim Croce peaked at #32 in July 1974.  You’re telling me a listener wouldn’t like to hear these songs on Classic Hits radio now?  I think Zoomer listeners appreciate the variety.  I liked hearing “Linda Put the Coffee On” by Ray Materick the other night.  It was better than hearing “Cuts Like A Knife” again.

I applaud the transformation of Zoomer radio.  The same formula is in play ... we just fit the demo now!  And I really am glad to listen to a radio station that still delivers excellent newscasts and isn't afraid to operate with a large inventory of songs ... not just the same 200 songs the bean counter programmers of today cling to that charted in the number 1 and 2 position.  What's wrong with playing a song from 1976 that peaked at 22 on Billboard?  Nothing!  The 9 o'clock Mix with Robbie is a great creative hour of radio!  I'd ditch the 80's at 8 and go with the Mix for 2 hours from 8pm until 10pm if I had access to the Zoomer suggestion box!!!

I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Wayne Bjorgan. I last spoke to Wayne following the occasion of CKCB Collingwood’s 50th anniversary. We shared many laughs about the cast of characters that sat behind the microphones at Barrie Broadcasting. Many laughs … many characters!Wayne was the General Manager of CKBB 950 Barrie – CKCB 1400 Collingwood when I began my broadcasting career as a high school student in the 1970’s.  He was an outstanding broadcaster.

I am very sad to hear of Brian's passing.  He was one of my mentors along the way.  As a teenager I remember listening to his evening rock show (as the White Knight) on CKBB.  Later on, Brian was the Program Director at CKBB/CKCB when I began my radio career at the age of 15.  I learned a great deal from him.  I always remembered a meeting we had in the new CKBB front lobby, still under construction on Ferris Lane in Barrie, when he told me to "always be yourself.  Talk the way you talk.  If you want to talk about your shoe laces, take off your shoe hold it up in front of you and describe it."  In later years Brian would often pop into CHAY-FM to visit or go for lunch on his way through Barrie.  Always fun, incredibly talented and gone too soon.

South Georgian Bay/Collingwood coverage by 97.7 The Beach (Bayshore Broadcasting) has been excellent this morning.  Live newscasts, a live talk show, updates on news and weather throughout the morning.  On the other hand, 95.1 The Peak (Corus) is in full automation mode and not providing a service to the community.  Not acceptable.

CHAY, operated by the folks who knew it best, would exist today but would have evolved to meet audience demands as it did for the first 24 years of its life before Corus blew it up in 2000.  Yes, when it signed on in the 1970's it played schlocky elevator music, but the playlist was very current for the final years of the station's existence and the audience numbers were still in the 250,000 listeners per week range and growing.  Sales numbers were still solid, so I believe a regional soft rock non-corporate sounding station with a meaningful news component would still serve the region well.  The station spent a great deal of time and money on programming and was dedicated to serving the local and regional audience first.  Isn't that what is missing from today's corporate radio formats?  Tune in to it today if you want to hear the exact opposite.

CHAY-FM used to own the Cottage Country Market, with sold out weekends at drive time rates, a quarter-million listeners weekly and a 2 share in Toronto.  Of course, Corus put a stop to that!

Forty years ago, visitors to Central Ontario on the long weekend were treated to the launch of CHAY FM, the vision of Elmvale newspaper publisher Andy Markle and Toronto radio executive Vin Dittmer. At the time, AM radio still ruled the airwaves. With 100,000 watts and a massive coverage area, CHAY-FM became the first “stand alone” FM radio station in Canada, meaning, it didn’t have an AM sister station to pay the bills. Many so called “experts” predicted the station would fail on its own. Quite the opposite happened.
Those were the good old days!!

Another format change?  Why not!  Since CHAY-FM's successful light rock format was abandoned  following the arrival of Corus on the scene, here are the brands:

Play FM  (that was a beauty!)
Energy Radio  (a disaster!)
FM 93
the new CHAY
CHAY TODAY @ 93.1
FRESH RADIO

Six format/branding changes in 15 years, with a revolving door of talent at every day part.
Can't wait to see what the deep thinkers at Corus march out this time!

The quick recap of Corus and CHAY-FM is:  About 15 years ago, Corus took over the popular soft rock station from Shaw Communications that boasted a regional audience of a quarter million listeners, a 2 share in Toronto and sold out dayparts seven days a week, dumped the format (and the audience), dismissed the talent, and began the process of flipping formats every year or two.  Energy Radio drove any remaining listeners in the 25-54, 25-64 demo away and wiped out the large advertising base. Corus Barrie has been spinning in circles ever since.  The latest format flip, Fresh Radio, is a canned juke box that is making many of the same deadly mistakes Energy Radio did by ignoring the real size and potential audience of the market.  Wiping out the newsroom at a 100,000 watt station that can be heard from Toronto to Huntsville is unbelievable.  What will they do next?  Probably network the Fresh Radio format, program it from London and fire a few more folks.

I first listened to Ken Trew on CKBB 950 in Barrie. He used to host a show on Saturday nights called THE PARTY PEOPLE PROGRAM. I then was fortunate enough to work with Ken for many, many years at CHAY-FM.  Ken and I reinvented The Party People Program on CHAY on Sunday nights, called Solid Gold Sunday Night.  Ken hosted this show with Jill Taylor (Jill the Thrill he called her on-air) and had a blast playing his oldies again.  By far, Ken was the most talented announcer I ever worked with.  He was a mentor, a colleague and of most importance, a friend.  Rest in peace Kenny T.  You will be greatly missed.
