As a regular trivia show listener, and frequent prize winner, I'm glad all you geniuses won't stoop low enough to call in and try your luck. The free meals, shopping and gas cards and show tickets are nice once in awhile. And hearing the really stupid answers or non-answers can be great fun. To each their own.
But you're right about many callers to that show, and pretty much all other radio shows, asking the host how they are. Really tiresome. I also resisted giving Richard Crouse a cold remedy.
I’m with you dieter, I like winning stuff too, and I find the show entertaining. I find people who knock things generally speaking are envious of those who enjoy it, real wallys!

I have some bad news for you Forward Power, it’s not just Rogers radio that is run by total idiots….
SOWNY » CORUS QUAY » Yesterday 8:04 am |
The Dundas Square building is a terrible building to work in, especially as a broadcaster. Rogers only wanted it as a showpiece in downtown Toronto and those execs are long gone. Think about it, you have a fleet of news trucks, but nowhere to park them, ever. Reporters had to get dropped and run in while the camera person looked for parking, pathetic.

The term "bonus" creates a pretty common misunderstanding in these stories.
It's not some random pat-on-the-back-good-job-buddy-wink-wink frivolity. It's a pillar of many employment contracts, and the base salary is not what is usually expected to be the total earnings.
And they don't just apply to the senior executive team; they can apply to morning show hosts, sales managers, marketing, etc.
So if a subscriber goal for StackTV is baked into a marketing director's contract, and they meet that goal, you have to pay that bonus...legally. Same for a morning show host exceeding ratings goals in Vancouver, or a PD at Q107.
Both John Gossling and Troy Reeb had different jobs and titles before Doug Murphy was let go, so obviously had contracts that were changed once they took over running the company. They had a bonus arrangement before taking over and the company honoured it. I don’t get all the fuss over this, at least they stuck around and are trying to keep the company afloat. Hey, at least Corus was straight up about this, unlike Tate being quiet and secretive about the CBC bonuses, AKA our tax bucks. Good post RadioAaron.

I turned on AM640 on Sunday just before the Roy Green Show and was surprised to hear PD Mike Bendixen doing one of their infomercials. It's been a long time since I heard him on the air.
What really made me take notice, though, was the extro to the show. It was called "Ask The Experts." If I'm not mistaken, isn't the same name CFRB uses for their paid commercials with Iain Grant on Sunday afternoons? Maybe because it's a paid show it doesn't mater.
But I find it odd that both competitors have the exact same title on the exact same day peddling different services.
I caught the top of Bendixen’s “Ask the Experts” as well Sunday. Speaking of who owns the title “Ask the Experts”, Liz West hosts an infomercial Saturdays on AM740 called “The Experts”, however, when it first went to air a few months ago, it was also called “Ask the Experts”, I guess 1010 contacted them!

What is going to be in their timeslots Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday? I guess we'll find out.
But talk about leaving early.
Deb Hutton was on yesterday and she mentioned she would be doing her show plus Jim Richards’ right up to Christmas Eve, busy woman!

Think it's kind of interesting that the Goose travel people have fixed their terrible initial radio ad where the announcer says pee nee colada.
The ad has been redone with an announcer who has a smooth deep voice as opposed to the initial lighter voice, and the stupid mispronounced classic cocktail drink.
Also the new ad features a produced jingle.
I noticed this fix as well, but the damage is done, I still think Peenee Coladas!

AFAIK, some of the programming acquired by Rogers will be on Citytv+, Rogers' streaming service, and On Demand, while some will remain as channels available on providers who chose to carry them: Rogers drops multiple channels from cable in favour of streaming only - Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News.
So my takeaway from this article is that Rogers poached channels from Corus and is now taking some of them off the air and streaming only. This will not sit well with many seniors as they aren’t big on streaming, generally speaking. My father in law and his buddies hate it, even though I’ve set two of them up in the past!
Thanks to The Weed for posting!

Very informative Radiowiz, thanks for posting. It looks like Corus gets to keep their original HGTV programs/personalities except for the Scott Brothers, which is good for Corus. I also see under Rogers, HGTV will be running mostly American productions. Wouldn’t CanCon apply still, regardless who airs the channel? Odd.
SOWNY » HGTV & Food Network on Rogers, but where exactly? » December 17, 2024 9:33 am |
On December 30th, Corus’ Home and Flavour channels will replace the current channel positions of HGTV and Food Network respectively, as Rogers has them now. However, where are Rogers placing their two “new” channels? I have not seen or heard anything on this and this happens in less than two weeks. One would think that Rogers would have made a splash after poaching these channels from Corus and let people know where to watch them. But then again, it is Rogers. Does anyone here on SOWNY know?

Actually Walter, it was more of a Boxing Day miracle as part of the prize were tickets to see the Marlies at the ScotiaBank centre. I took my son and a couple of his pals, all but one came from single parent families. None had ever been to the ScotiaBank centre or a pro hockey game of any type, so that was a good prize pack not only for me! The seats were amazing and the lads had a blast!

SOWNY » What Was The Best Year For Music On The Radio? » December 16, 2024 9:21 am |
My favourite radio years would have to be the early 80s when New Wave was influencing pop. Remember Wall of Voodoo and the likes? I think pop music got shook up, sure there was still Hall and Oates, but even they were influenced. There were some very innovative artists, and like Jody Thornton, I liked Simple Minds, Someone, Somewhere in Summertime did get some airplay back in the day, but Love Song always worked for me! Good post and great input.

Keep Radio One and cut back the TV staff by 50%, they have two people doing the work of one person, never have I worked in such a bloated environment staff wise. And Tate did nothing for the Corp in her six year tenure, shameful. They should know how to hire a president by now, they’ve had 16!

The Waters family represented among the last of the truly great radio owners, who cared as much about the quality of what went on the air as the amount of money coming through the door. We will not see their like again.
It took a few months after the Rogers takeover but the job losses came fairly quickly, as always seems to happen whenever Big Red takes over anything. And for better or worse, City TV's news was never the same after that, with the quirky content it used to carry and the original formatics that made it so unique gone forever.
Today, that newsroom is a shadow of its former self, all of which, in my mind, can be traced back to the death of Allan Waters and the company he loved so much going to someone else who cared more about profits than presentation.
I was working for Citytv when Rogers took over and started swinging their axe. It was brutal and it became fairly obvious to us that Rogers didn’t quite “get” TV, even though they had OMNI. They trashed the newsroom for sure RA, it never recovered, losing or laying off their true talent, in fact, they let Pam Seatle go and realized they were now short staffed, and hired her back, talk about amateurs. They took over a fairly positive work force and made it basically crap, I started to hate going in, like many, but it was a job in a dying industry.
Allan Waters, on the other hand, would go around the station, often with his wife, and wish all the staff a Merry Christmas/happy holidays, big difference in management styles, class vs. crass.

This is a solid production and Trafford gets decent guests, relevant/interesting topics, and is a pro presenter. So check it out, you won’t be disappointed!
