The latest "format count" of American radio stations has come out. The list is the top ten formats by station format in the US, and shouldn't be confused with listenership. The number of stations for each format is pretty impressive.

I wonder what a similar Canadian list would look like. Probably French and Ethnic would replace Spanish and Religion.

I have never seen anything that ranked radio by the number of stations for each format in Canada. French definitely would have a lot of stations. Ethnic I sort of doubt the proportion would be as much as Religion and or Contemporary Christian in the US.
The number of stations does not necessarily reflect the popularity of the format with ratings. And with religion and contemporary christian music stations it is hard to gauge the numbers listening since they rarely take part in ratings. They do bring in a lot of money from their loyal listeners however.

Ethnic is actualy increesing.
There's now an ethnic mostly Arabic station in Halifax.
London is getting a new Malayalam low power ethnic station.
CHAM swiched to an ethnic format playing Punjabi music and probably breaking CRTC rules.
Calgary might be getting a new ethnic station.
Winipeg just got a new Ethnic community station called youradio.
