Director Rob Reiner, who made the original mocumentary "This Is Spinal Tap," has confirmed he's working on a sequel to the beloved flick, due out in 2024. The plot centres on - what else? - a final farewell tour for the faux group, who apparently "hated" the film that made them famous.
Best of all, all the originals are coming back for the movie.

Will it go to eleven?

There's a deep well of talent there, but I fear it'll turn out to be a damp squib instead of a Station Nightclub-style blaze.

It will prob be a disappointment but I'll see anyway.

Harry Shearer weighs in on the upcoming sequel, which begins filming in February, as well as his years (35 and counting!) with The Simpsons, his time on SNL and why he despises Lorne Michaels, and his love of radio.

Production on this sequel is now officially underway. Ready or not, it's coming! And not just with the original cast.
"...it has also been confirmed that the movie will feature cameos from music legends like Elton John, Paul McCartney, Questlove, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood."

Why not? People still shell out ridiculous amounts of money to see geriatric versions of the Stones, Journey, Kansas and many other bands 40 years past their best before dates. Maybe Spinal Tap can skewer the whole genre. It could be very entertaining, in a sad and pathetic kind of way.

Director Rob Reiner has revealed some of the plot lines (are there any real plot lines?) for the long awaited Spinal Tap sequel. Among the revelations: both Paul McCartney and Elton John make cameos in the film, and both sing in the movie.
“There’s a scene where Henry Diltz, the very famous rock photographer, takes them to a cemetery in New Orleans. Nigel’s like, ‘Why are we here? All these people are dead.’ And Henry says, ‘Well, you’ve got to get used to this idea. You know, it’s going to happen.’
“Then Derek has this idea of what it’s going to be like after he dies. So he’s got this song called Rockin’ In The Urn which is all about the fact that even after he’s dead, he’s still going to be performing.”
A release date for the film has yet to be confirmed. But you can bet when it is, the hype machine will be turned up to 11.

Spinal Tap landed at just the right time for me and there was a time when I could recite the lines along with the film. I've no need or desire for this sequel but I'm sure I'll sit through it and I'm also sure it will not live up to the hype (can anything though?), and there is evidence of one joke (albeit a small one) being recycled:
“Derek (Smalls) is living in London and is now the curator of the New Museum of Glue. He’s curated glue from every country in the world – the whole history of glue – and he shows me around. He’s also been performing with a philharmonic orchestra, and he’s written this kind of symphony about the fact that the devil wears a bad hair piece. It’s called Hell Toupee.”
Hell Toupee was the name of a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segment in Season 10. Homer gets a hair transplant that turns him evil.

Sounds silly, I’ll go see it!

I'm sure parts of it will be good, but overall I don't know if they can make an hour and a half out of it.
I wonder if some of the more minor actors will be in it like Fran Drescher and Paul Shaeffer.
Prob not.
But overall the main stars still work because in real life we have rock bands who are now elderly, The Stones being the obvious example, but there's member of The Who still around and acts like Rod Stewart and even Tom Jones.
I even heard an interview with Engleburt Humperdink who was promoting a new tour.

If it doesn't rest on its laurels and depend on the viewer to be a rabid Spinal Tap fan then it could work.
Otherwise it'll be branded with the dreaded "only to be remembered by how quickly it was forgotten."
We did the presents for the first movie. Lots of fun although I ended up sleeping through the second half of the film in the very rowdy, smelling of dope, sold out movie theatre because I'd just started working the swing shift and hadn't adjusted yet. There were a few Spinal Tap moments in my radio career working with certain bands and solo musicians.
I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel but will be surprised if it manages to do what "Aliens" pulled off after "Alien."

A really fun story about the troupe is they still encounter peole who don't know Spinal Tap is a joke. They think it is a real group.
They once toured as their characters from ":A Mighty Wind" which some people think is a real folk band.
I heard once they did a double act, opening for A Might Wind as Spinal Tap.
