Let's Hope AM640's Weekend Morning Show Returns To Normal Soon

First it was Ben Mulroney, who for obvious reasons, had an excellent grasp of politics.

Then came Anthony Furey, who, despite a right wing stance that upsets many here, understood the issues and how to do a talk show.

But now AM640 seems to have given "Toronto This Weekend" over to Davelle Morrison, a real estate agent with no real radio experience apart from being a weekly guest on the same show in the past.

She sounds like a very nice person, but her show has become increasingly unlistenable. Instead of topics like what's going on in the world, we get 15 minute segments on what to do on New Year's Eve, the hobbies she shares with her husband, interior decorating and other PSA-like detritus that is like listening to paint dry.

No offence intended to the apparently new host, who seems like a decent lady, but I hope she's only there for the holiday period and they get back to a permanent host who understands that talk radio is about issues - and not this flowery "what's your favourite colour for the bathroom decor" topics.

Plus, I suspect she's reluctant to get heavy into the political stuff because as a real estate agent, taking a side someone doesn't agree with on politics could affect her main business. Which I'm guessing may be why she avoids the subject at a time when there's so much going on in that area.

There is so little to listen to in this town when it comes to talk programming on the weekends that losing this content is noticeable. We're already about to lose Roy Green. Let's hope this show doesn't follow suit.

Re: Let's Hope AM640's Weekend Morning Show Returns To Normal Soon

I guess a lot depends on your taste in talk shows. I personally cannot listen to the Glenn Crouter segment listing all the events going on in the city, none of which I have the slightest interest in ever attending. It's a total tune-out for me.

But if I'm going to listen to talk radio, I'd prefer it be about something and not just fluffy topics that instantly have me reaching for the dial.

I guess it's a case of to each his own. I have run into so many PDs over the years who really believe that "no one wants to hear serious topics on the weekend!" and run some of the blandest programming imaginable. At least I think they do, because I'm not listening. My contention is that if it's interesting Monday-Friday, it doesn't stop being interesting just because it's the weekend. Plus, many of those listeners may not be able to hear the weekday shows because they're working. So it's new to some of them.

Imagine if Roy Green devoted his three hours of airtime to decorating his living room or turkey basting tips. He would not have lasted as long as he did.

Again, it's a personal taste thing. I'm glad you like the new 640 weekend show. I'm finding it increasingly hard to listen to. If there was a balance in the subject matter, it would help. But it seems like it's either one way or the other. And "the other" is truly boring to me. That doesn't make what they're doing wrong. It just makes it harder for someone like me to have a reason to tune in.

Agreed.  Glenn Crouter is an automatic channel changer.  The 640 morning show was pretty good with Ben Mulroney, although even he wandered into HGTV and Parenting 101 too often for my taste.

He's the "Tom's Place" of segments.

I recall Radio Noon's gardening phone ins used to have a huge following- so I think there is room on radio for shows - or at least segments on hobbies and special interests but not all day. And of course weekend "programming" on commercial talk radio seems to be driven by who is willing to buy time than what the audience is actually interested in. Yeah, you will have devoted gardeners who will tune in regularly to hear a gardening show  and you do have people who are passionate about real estate even when they aren't selling or buying something but how many listeners have an ongoing interest in employment law or disability law?

Re: Let's Hope AM640's Weekend Morning Show Returns To Normal Soon

I listened to the 640 weekend morning show since Ben left, and could not stay more than a few minutes because both times it was a couple of women talking about food recipes or spa visits.
I don't want some hard core news topics all the time, but at least something engaging.
On the other hand I was listening today in the afternoon and got somebody talking about F%@##ing schools and teachers again.
Je%%sus Ch%%$$st,just send your kids to school and shut up about it.
They will learn sh%%$t.

Also, Morrison had pointed out that she's flying out for vacation and this coming weekend (January 4-5) she wouldn't be available to host the show. So, not sure if they'll return to Anthony Furey (is that a steady gig of his?) - maybe Christine Cardoso sits in again?
