A December To Remember For Canadian Newsrooms

If you've ever worked in a newsroom, you know what happens when there's nothing going on. Normally, when the calendar gets to this time of year we hit the December doldrums, a point at which there's just no real news worth the name. That's great for most people, but for a newsperson, it's a nightmare.

The search for a story to lead your newscast with can be a challenge at any time of year, but especially now. So you end up leading with last minute Christmas sales, the weather or a minor fender bender that closed a few cross streets for 10 minutes and you play it up as if it was important because there's nothing else.

That's most mid-Decembers. But not this one. As someone who spent 35 years over three decades in the news business, I can honestly say the last week or two before Christmas has been the busiest and craziest I've ever seen. The problem this time isn't what to lead with - it's what to put second.

Consider (and I don't want to get into politics here, but it's just this list is incredible.)

-Trump threatens Canada with crippling tariffs when he gets into office, as politicians here panic.
-The government decides to table its Financial Economic Statement late on the second last day of the session.
-Members of his own caucus increasingly demand their leader resign
-The Finance Minister quits, throwing her boss under the bus
-There's a last minute Cabinet Shuffle
-The NDP leader confirms he will finally vote against the government the first chance he gets.

And that's just in the last two weeks or so!

I've been in news for over 35 years and I have honestly never seen anything like this at this time of the year. It's simply incredible. I know everyone is taking off for Christmas and most stations have fired a lot of their news staff. But whoever's left should be on standby in case they're needed.

The Christmas of 2024 will go down as one of the most incredible news months of all time. And it's not over yet.

yup and now we have a possible terrorist incident of someone driving into a Xmas market in Germany with at least 1 dead and dozens injured.  More "breaking news".

No local angle yet, so no all-hands-on-deck, though it could cheaply be exploited as a War on Christmas/War on Whites conflict for the benefit of the average 640 listener.

And don’t forget us becoming the 51st state, like you said RA, it’s not over yet!

I seem to recall some years ago a U.S. politician floating the idea that the then federal gov't should offer every Canadian over 18 one million dollars each to sell our sovereignty to them and become part of the U.S. It was laughed off then as a lark.

And the fact that all of a sudden you have two classes of citizens. This wouldn't go over well in the US if all Canadians get a million just to join the US.  Why wouldn't all Americans get a million as well?  After all they would now need to put up with us...which wouldn't be a treat for them.  Do we give up our healthcare?  Or would the US now get universal healthcare like the state of Canada?  And do we get open carry for guns like Michigan?   But hey, at least no more simsub, or cancon... we need to remember the important things in this arrangement..

51st state?
I'd like to see the Trump bunch try to deal with Quebec.  Ha!
