It's Not Your Imagination. TV Show Seasons Are Shorter Than Ever

The days of the 22-episode TV season are all but over. What's really disturbing, though, is that so are those that ran at least 13 episodes. Not only are some programs now running just 8 shows, but it's creating a real headache for people who make their living creating television.

TV seasons are getting shorter. Canadians who rely on the industry are nervous.

Re: It's Not Your Imagination. TV Show Seasons Are Shorter Than Ever

The short seasons are because of the streamers.  All of the OTA networks own a streaming service and often run a series on both.  Any network series runs the next day on the streaming channel.

Series exclusive to Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, Crave,  Hulu, Disney etc. have always had short runs, usually 6 to 13 episodes.  Even hits like Only Murders In The Building have 10 shows per season, White Lotus 7 per season,  A Man On The Inside first season 8 installments.

The fewer number of episodes has filtered over to OTA TV series where 18 per season is even starting to become not as common.  The cost of the shows is also a factor.  That's why many movies and shows have been shot in Canada and our cheap dollar.

It always because of the money...

It's been that way in Britain for many years. Some shows only run as long as 6 episodes. In fact, they don't even call it "a season." They refer to it as "a series." And they're often very short.

In the pre-streaming era, some of the "landmark HBO" shows (Oz, Sopranos) only ran 8-13 episode seasons.

I do prefer the term "series" over "season". It's more accurate since there are now multiple television seasons per calendar year. Hearing Jeff Probst proclaim "Survivor Season 47" always sounded weird/wrong to me and I believe the latest promos have dropped the word "season", and it sounds cleaner being promoted as "Survivor 47".

At one time, series with poor ratings would be pulled after 13 weeks. I remember reading years ago that Tim Conway had the number 13 on his licence plate because none of the shows where he was the lead star lasted longer than thirteen weeks.

As long as there's more game shows, I don't really care.
I'm glad the Floor got another two seasons after the first one, not just one.

You would have loved the 60's/early 70's. In addition to day time, many game shows had night versions as well. Truth or Consequences, Price Is Right [Bill Cullen version] To Tell The Truth, Let's Make A Deal, Dating and Newlywed Games, Hollywood Squares, Password. And of course there was the night only I've Got A Secret and What's My Line.
