Does Anyone Know Who Was Behind These Charts?

Way back when there were still CHUM Charts, I remember also finding in some record stores (when there were still record stores!) an additional freebie. It was called The RPM 100 and published a ranking of the top 100 songs of the week. The one below is from Dec. 7, 1966.

I never really took them seriously because, well, CHUM was the authority in Toronto as far I was concerned. But as I came across them again, I wondered - who was behind this thing? How long was it out for? Was it related to RPM Magazine, which started in 1964? And how long did this last? I don't remember it being on the racks in the later 60s.

(By the way, Library and Archives Canada has an incredible collection of the original RPM magazines. "Over 10,000 charts were digitized in their entirety, and are searchable by keyword, date and chart type, from country hits to top singles." A real treasure trove of musical memories and material. You can check it out here.)

I remember seeing occasionally in record stores "Keeping Track by Joey Cee" which was a weekly or maybe monthly list of new songs that had not yet charted.

Re: Does Anyone Know Who Was Behind These Charts?

Walt Grealis started RPM Magazine in 1964. The weekly publication included the RPM Chart. There were also charts for other formats, including country and adult contemporary. RPM Magazine ceased publication in November 2000. BTW, RPM stood for "Records, Promotion and Music", not "Revolutions Per Minute" as one might assume.

This was an early version of a CKFH chart. I never really did understand the point of it.

Re: Does Anyone Know Who Was Behind These Charts?

The chart in the first post is the same as the chart published by RPM magazine on Dec 5, 1966.
