Big moves ahead in radio/TV? Read these and judge for yourself
Hmmmm....lots of speculation here, but still rather thin on facts. However, two reports from the world of sports media today are worthy of note:
- Bellmedia denying reports that it's looking to sell TSN; and
- Sportsnet planning to pull the plug on FAN590 and turn it into an all-podcast station.
Let 'er rip...

This came up in a previous thread here, but since you asked, I might not have believed it a year ago, (because who else would carry the games and do a decent post-game? CHFI? Maybe 680?) but after watching Bell layoff 4,800 people and sell or shutter 45 radio stations in February, and seeing Corus suddenly shut down 97-year-old CHML with no warning (not to mention closing those stations out west), I now believe almost anything is possible.
Not sure how an "all podcast" format would work on 590, though.

Let's not forget that the rules have changed to allow 3 FM and one AM...however, who says anyone wants to sell their FM? Who says sport games are in any demand on FM? Most importantly, who says CRTC will allow a sports radio station on FM...however...a Podcast FM???
But back to the more important point...nobody is selling an FM station in Toronto...right?

If this speculation is to be believed, the games could still be on 590 with the podcasts acting as filler / small revenue opportunity.

I know one of the iHeartMedia stations in Erie PA had a “all podcast” format on one of their low power FM signals on 95.9 FM. But it switched to a simulcast of their Fox Sports format from the AM signal sometime ago.

How about the fact that this is multicultural Toronto. I bet 1430 would love to buy 1050 and move into that more powerful frequency, perhaps causing a shut down of 1430 AM radio in Toronto instead?

Jonah Sigel is not even based in Canada. He's located in Seattle and has been wrong on a variety of subjects in the past. To me this sounds like click bait!

I will say that a lot of the stuff he posted in that article is stuff I have been hearing for the last several months. My information is coming from the same people that had told me about the fact bell was looking to sell a number of stations, and the only difference in that information and the information when it was announced was there were a few more bell stations that should have been added to the list but it was modified due to negotiations falling apart.
The stations that didn't get sold? The TSN stations and the couple of other stations they had not turned in the license for that had been shut down.
Lets see how all this stuff plays out, but I suspect there will be a lot of changes in the media landscape in Canada over the next few years

I agree.. 2025 will be busy for trading/selling among Canadian media companies. I have similar intel that Bell plans to shutdown TSN Radio if no buyers are found by end of Q1. They don't want to announce it until the CRTC approves their other transactions. I suspect they're either losing too much money, or they want to free up the ability to acquire FM stations in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa because of the new revised commercial radio policy.
