An industry insider with a history of being right is predicting Rogers may either change the format of The Fan 590 - or shutter the place altogether. It's all part of an ongoing trend in the radio industry that sees full time sports stations increasingly relying on syndicated imported programming and not the local input that originally made them relevant.
In a column this week, Jonah Sigel predicts seismic changes could be in store for 590, which rose from the ashes of CJCL's talk attempt to become the first all-sports station in Canada. He also speculates that Bell may be looking at getting rid of its stake in TSN.
"...at Rogers Media, The FAN 590’s future appears increasingly precarious. Sources suggest the station, once the flagship of Canadian sports radio, could be shuttered in favor of an all-podcast format. The transformation is already evident – programming has been significantly cut, with only “The Real Kyper Show” generating meaningful audience numbers. The station, which pioneered sports radio in Canada, now relies heavily on Blue Jays, Raptors and Leafs games to maintain relevance."
